Top 10 Selling Cars of August 2019

  • Maruti had 8 models in the Top 10 list and Hyundai had 2 models.
  • Some major reshuffling happened in the Top 10 – Grand i10 was bought back from the list (yeah, Nios has a major contribution in that) and Hyundai’s i20 & Creta made their way out. Maruti’s Brezza managed to fare in the Top 10 and stood last.
  • Alto slipped from its 4th rank in July’19 and ranked 5th in Aug’19. Dzire was the No.1 Selling car of Aug’19 and sold just over 13k units. Previously the top ranked car used to sell an average of >18k units atleast.
  • Eeco continuously makes its entry in the Top 10. It is trying to cover the shortfall of Omni; but that’s a big gap to cover.

Top 10 Selling Cars of May 2019

Observations from the Top 10 list –

  • Swift tops the chart and topples the usual Alto & Dzire from the position. But the story comes here with a twist – 2,142 units of Glanza were shipped in May’19; Hence including Baleno sales (15,176 units) the platform had together been the bestselling car for May’19! (Total – 17,318).
  • BS6 complaint Alto was launched. However; that hasn’t allowed Alto sales from falling down. The nameplate degrew -25% YoY. Dzire shares the same fate and its sales fell -34% in May’19 v/s May’18.
  • New Wagon-R couldn’t wither the storm and degrew -9% in May’19. It ranked 5th in the table.
  • Eeco shoots to the 6th place; thanks to the exit of Omni. Eeco is now the only option available in the Petrol/CNG Van category.
  • Creta still is the best-selling Hyundai in May’19 and ranked 7th. Surprisingly grand i10 is ousted from the Top 10 list and now only 2 Hyundai cars survive in the Top 10!
  • Ertiga outsold Brezza! It would have been an impossible feat a year ago; but the freshness and practicality of Ertiga is finding buyers even in a dull market.

Top 10 Selling Cars – September 2018

Snippets:

  • Maruti & Hyundai have again ousted an Other OEM entrant – Yes, Honda’s Amaze is now out of the Top 10 selling cars and is replaced by Maruti’s Celerio! The duopoly has made the Industry extremely difficult for other OEMs to survive and is clearly visible in the Top 10 list.
  • The Top 6 selling cars are from Maruti’s stable & 7 out of Top 10 are Maruti’s! Hyundai as usual occupies the No.7, No.8 & No.9 positions. Hyundai has been holding this position quite strongly and has no signs of leaving it.
  • Maruti’s Swift occupies the Pole Position and overtakes the Aug’18 leader Alto by quite a margin (>500 units to be precise). Swift has gained the No.1 position after 16 long months (Last time Swift was in the Top Spot in the month of Apr’17!).
  • Brezza places itself in the Top 5. The compact SUV is gaining strength month and is the only UV in the Top 5!
  • The other notable SUV in the list is Hyundai’s Creta. The SUV offers tremendous value and sells almost equivalent to the much cheaper compact hatch Grand i10.
