Kia Begins Preparing For Sonet, Renault Triber AMT, Nissan Kicks Launched

Renault Triber AMT Automatic Prices Announced, Bookings Open

Prices are officially out for the Renault Triber AMT automatic. The Triber with a 5-speed AMT is available in the top three variants – RXL, RXT and RXZ. Here are the prices:

2020 Renault Triber AMT Automatic Prices

RXL

Rs. 6.18 lakh

RXT

Rs. 6.68 lakh

RXZ

Rs. 7.22 lakh

These are Rs. 40,000 more than the comparable variants with the manual transmission. The Triber’s 5-speed AMT automatic also gets a manual gear selection option, which is not available in the Kwid. The Renault Kwid gets a rotary-style shifter. The Triber’s AMT implementation is similar to that of the Datsun Redi-Go. That car also shares its powertrain and transmission with the Renault Kwid but it gets the option of manually selecting the gears.

Opinion

The Triber’s only real competition comes from within the family. The Datsun Go Plus is the only other 7-seater family car you can buy for this price. The Go Plus offers a more powerful 1.2-litre petrol engine and a smoother CVT automatic transmission. The premium you pay for the Go Plus CVT is just Rs. 70,000 – a steal in our opinion. The catch is that it’s only available in the top T and T (O) variants. So, the entry price isn’t low. The Go Plus automatic costs Rs. 6.7 and 6.9 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Here are the prices:

The 1.33-litre turbo petrol engine is available in all but the base XL variant. Its output stands at 156PS and 254Nm – which is higher than Creta and Seltos’ 140PS and 250Nm. The 1.5-litre normal petrol engine makes 106PS and 142Nm. While the turbo petrol engine shines in its class, the normal engine doesn’t. The Creta and Seltos’ normal petrol engine makes 115PS of power and 144Nm of torque.

Opinion

The jump to the turbo petrol engine in the XV variant is Rs. 1.85 lakh. That is a steep premium to pay for the ‘best-in-class performance’ bragging rights. Then, adding the CVT automatic transmission will cost you another Rs. 1.6 lakh. That’s one more big price jump. With the Hyundai Creta, you can jump from the SX 1.5-litre normal petrol MT to the SX 1.35-litre turbo AT for Rs. 2.7 lakh. With the Nissan Kicks, it’ll cost you Rs. 3.45 lakh.

Meanwhile, the variant-wise feature list is not out yet. So for now, check the variant wise features as per the leaked brochure:

Kia Motors has started production at its Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh facility. The carmaker is implementing the necessary safety measures to contain the spread of the virus at its workplaces. The carmaker said that they are aiming to ‘clear pending bookings of Seltos and Carnival’. Kia is also preparing the assembly line to begin production of the Sonet subcompact SUV.

Kookhyun Shim, Managing Director & CEO, Kia Motors India said:

Kia Motors India priorities are to clear pending orders for the best-selling Seltos and luxurious Carnival, and also to prepare the line for the eagerly anticipated compact SUV, Sonet. Opinion

The Kia Sonet is the first car in India to introduce us to the next big change in driving technology. During the Sonet’s unveil at the 2020 Auto Expo, Kia announced that the Sonet will get the Intelligent Manual Transmission (IMT). This is their clutchless manual transmission. After the success of the AMT with the Maruti Suzuki Celerio, this could become the next game-changer in our market.

While there are aftermarket auto-clutch options, they’re pricey. So pricey that you could get a complete AMT from the manufacturer with a warranty for a comparable price. These kits go for about Rs. 40-45,000 but are transferrable to another car. Kia’s implementation could come at a similar or slightly lower price point. The Sonet was to launch by the festive season and the pandemic may affect the launch timeline.
