  • Ertiga was the best selling Maruti model for May’20 with dispatches of over 2.3k units.
  • Dzire came in second with 2,215 unit dispatches.
  • Alto was pushed to 5th Spot and only 1,506 units were dispatched in May 2020.
  • Vitara Brezza could sell just over 500 units and degrew 93% YoY.
  • S-Cross Sales was ZERO as the BS6 model is yet to be launched.

  • XUV300 ranked second with dispatches of 1,257 units in  May 2020.

  • Polo recorded the lowest YoY degrowth in May’20. It helped VW jump to 8th largest OEM and gain a Market Share of 3.8%. VW overtook the likes of MG & Ford in May 2020.
  • T-ROC was VW’s third best selling model with 70 units dispatched last month!

9. MORRIS GARAGES INDIA (MG Motors) –

Top 25 Selling Cars of May 2020 –

Bajaj Auto leveraged on exports in May 2020!

While the domestic market was reeling with lockdown in several parts of the country; Bajaj Auto’s strategy of focusing on exports worked well. Bajaj Auto’s exported over 2 times the domestic volumes in May 2020! However; the overall sales of Bajaj Auto fell 70% YoY to 1,27,128 units in May vis-a-vis 4,19,235 units in the same month last year. The segment wise sales bifurcation for Bajaj Auto is as shown –

  • Domestic two-wheelers reported dispatches of 39,286 units in May’20 vs 2,05,721 units in May’19 — 81% decline.
  • Two-wheeler exports recorded 73,512 units vs 1,59,347 a year ago which was a 54% decline.
  • Domestic commercial vehicles saw a dip of 97% (788 units in May’20 vs 30,103 in May’19)
  • Commercial Vehicle exports registered 13,542 dispatches in May 2020 vs 24,064 in May’19; which was a 44% decline

Top 10 Selling Cars of May 2020 – India

There are a lot of surprises in the list of Best 10 selling cars in India for May 2020 –

  • For the first time – India’s best selling car was a Non-Maruti. Hyundai’s Creta emerged as the best selling car of May 2020!
  • While 5 Maruti vehicles fared in the Top 10 list; 2 models from Mahindra and 1 each from Kia, Hyundai & Tata got in the Top 10.
  • Maruti’s Ertiga was India’s second largest selling vehicle for May 2020. Do note that the 1st ranked vehicle was a SUV and the Rank 2 vehicle was an MPV!
  • India’s favorite sub-4m sedan Dzire ranked third in the sales chart.
  • The sole Van in India – Eeco came in 5th with dispatch statistics of 1,617 units!
  • Kia’s Seltos sold 1,611 units and ranked 6th.

May 2020 Car Sales – Snapshot

After a disastrous Zero Wholesales in April 2020; Indian Auto Industry registered a massive YoY degrowth of -84.5% in May 2020!

Only 36,576 Passenger Cars were dispatched from OEMs to their respective dealers in the month of May 2020 v/s 2,36,533 cars in May 2019. The OEMs and dealers resumed operations in a staggered manner in May’20 and the lockdown effect was clearly visible in the last month sales figures. Thankfully these are Dispatch data and what we understand that the retail figures were significantly higher. The automobile dealers were carrying huge inventory levels and the dispatches were minimized by OEMs to support dealers rationalize their stocks. Hence the figures wouldn’t present a clear picture on the sales statistics for the respective OEMs/model.

  • Maruti Suzuki India dispatched 13,702 units to its respective dealers in May’20. It registered a YoY fall of -88.7% and also lost -13.7% Market Share!
  • Hyundai too registered a YoY drop of -83.8% even with the All New Creta. However; its market share increased by a meager 0.8%
  • Mahindra regained its No.3 spot with a dispatch statistics of 3,745 units. The OEM has streamlined the production of its BS6 portfolio in May’20 and adequate stocks have been billed to the respective dealers. It was also successful to get a double digit market share of 10.2% in May 2020.
  • Tata stood fourth and gained a Market Share of 4% in May’20. The YoY degrowth was however -71.1%.
  • Renault ranked Fifth and over 1.7k units were dispatched in May’20. It also gained 2.3% Market Share YoY.
  • Kia Motors India was able to occupy the sixth slot with dispatch of 1,661 units of Seltos & Carnival. May’20 Market Share for Kia was 4.5%.
