Honda Cars Sales Analysis – October 2020

Honda Cars India sold 10,836 cars in Oct’20 and registered a YoY growth of 8%. It is the second month in succession Honda was able to cross 10k monthly sales in this year.

  • As usual; Amaze was the best selling Honda for the month and sold 4,709 units. However; the model degrew -8% YoY and -13% MoM.
  • City performance was exhilarating and it crossed 4k units sales after 20 long months! The New Honda City has now established itself as the undisputed king of the Executive Sedan segment.
  • The New BS6 WR-V was able to cross 1k units sales and degrew -20% YoY. The model is facing extreme heat with the competition and not able to gain volumes.
  • Civic is still the segment leader and has its own dedicated fan following. But the segment itself has failed in the past few years.

Top 25 Selling Cars of October 2020

The Top 25 selling cars contributed to over 81% of the cars sold in India! Maruti dominated the list with 10 models and was followed by Hyundai (5 models) and Tata (3 models).

  • The Top 5 selling cars in Oct’20 were from Maruti’s stable. The best selling car was the Maruti Suzuki Swift and sold 24,589 units when compared to 19,401 units in the same period last year.
  • The First Non-Maruti car on the list came from Hyundai – The Creta! Creta became the 6th best selling car and the No.1 selling SUV of Oct’20.
  • Grand i10 was close and ranked 7th in the list. It sold over 14k units and grew a healthy 42% YoY.
  • The only van in the entire list (Eeco) was also the 8th best selling passenger vehicle for the month. Eeco has been largely able to substantiate Omni’s volumes too.
  • Kia’s Sonet could make up in the Top 10 and ranked 10th in the table. The model has a very successful launch and has easily overtaken the sibling Venue. Also note that Brezza has outsold both Sonet & Venue in Oct’20.
  • Bolero remains Mahindra’s best selling car and ranked 16th. It was also the only Mahindra model in the Top 20!
  • Nexon was the best selling Tata model for Oct’20 and ranked 18th. Altroz & Tiago followed closely and ranked 19th & 20th respectively.
  • Amaze was the only Honda model in the Top 25 list and could sell 4,709 units in Oct’20. However; it registered a YoY degrowth of -8%.

MUV/MPV Segment Sales Analysis – October 2020

MUV Segment saw a dip for the first time in this FY and it fell -3% YoY. No new launches in the segment may have led to the trend.

  • Ertiga + XL6 sold a 10,187 units and contributed to over 35% of the segment’s volumes! Do note that the model is also planned to be rebadged and sold from Toyota showrooms too in near future!
  • Mahindra’s oldest workhorse Bolero still sells like hotcake. The model grew a phenomenal 30% YoY and was backed by strong rural demand. The festivities along with Bihar elections have surely given the upswing in sales for the Bolero!
  • Triber volumes is now tapering down and the model sales was flat YoY. Triber was the Renault’s most successful launch of 2019; and falling volumes is not a good sign.
  • XL6 recorded a massive fall in YoY volumes (-44%). Believe; customers are not ready to accept the 6 seater Ertiga?
  • Innova Crysta is getting back in shape – Post Lockdown; the model volumes had dropped significantly and is now slowly gaining traction. However; it still registered a YoY degrowth of -12%.




Hyundai India Sales Analysis – October 2020

Hyundai reported lifetime high monthly sales in Oct’20! Hyundai dispatched 56,605 units in October and registered a YoY & MoM growth of 13%.

  • Hyundai crossed the 56k monthly figure for the first time in its existence in the Indian market. The previous monthly highest sales volume was 52,001 units which was achieved exactly 2 years back (in Oct’18).
  • Creta was the best seller for Hyundai and contributed to almost 25% of Hyundai’s sales in October 2020! The model also emerged as India’s best selling SUV for the month.Do note that Creta crossed the 14k sales mark for the first time since launch!
  • i10 Nios was the OEMs second best seller and sold over 14k units. It registered a YoY growth of 42% and MoM growth of 35%. i10 Nios sales have increased post lockdown and highlights increasing demand for small cars. Do note that India’s best selling car was Swift and is a direct rival of i10 Nios.
  • Venue ranked third for the OEM and around 8,469 units were dispatched in October 2020.
  • Even though the current gen i20 is at its end of the lifecycle; 8,399 dispatches is quite impressive. It shows how customers are ready to purchase the model even though a new model is in the pipeline.

Honda City gains a Market Share of 44% in the Executive Sedan Segment in Oct’20!

Honda City sales were up by a mammoth 119% YoY in Oct’20 and the model sold over 4.1k units last month!

  • The New Honda City again took the crown as India’s No.1 Executive Sedan for October 2020 with sales of 4,124 units. Hyundai’s Verna managed to come 2nd with dispatches of 2,166 units.
  • The 5th Generation Honda City has been accepted well and the model is leaving no room for competition to rise to the top spot. The model recorded its all time highest volume in the past 21 months in Oct’20 and now commands over 44% Market Share in the segment.
  • Hyundai too launched the Verna facelift early this year and was able to sustain volumes. However; it recorded a flat growth in Oct’20 and ranked second in the list.
  •  Maruti’s Ciaz now remains the most outdated model in the list and is now struggling to compete with the likes of New City/Verna. It registered one of the highest dip in sales YoY and took the third spot in the segment.
