Maruti Suzuki Sales Analysis – December 2020

Maruti Suzuki dispatched 1,40,754 units to its dealers in December 2020. It was a 15% growth over December 2019 and 4% growth over November 2020!

  • Alto regained its Top spot from the sibling Swift after 4 long months. However; Alto was just 9 units ahead of Swift!
  • Baleno registered flat YoY & MoM sales and was the third best selling model in Maruti’s portfolio.
  • Wagon-R saw a mammoth 64% YoY increase and ranked fourth. Post Covid era has been highly encoraging for hatchbacks and is clearly visible in the sales volumes.
  • Both Dzire & Brezza saw a decline in YoY volumes. Discontinuation of diesel is surely one of the reasons for it.
  • 11,215 units of Eeco sold in Dec’20! Only Maruti can do it.

560 units of Nissan Magnite were dispatched in December 2020!

Almost 49% of Nissan India’s volumes were contributed from the Magnite. 560 units of the model were shipped to the dealerships in the first month of its launch.

Nissan has garnered over 32,000 bookings for the Magnite and is trying all means possible to increase the production capacity to cater the demand. The company recently revealed that the introductory prices of the Magnite shall remain untouched; with only change being in the base variant (XE to be priced at Rs.5.49 L).

  • With dispatches of 560 units; Magnite was the best selling Nissan for December 2020. Magnite shall undoubtedly be the most important launch for Nissan India till date. A lot depends on the model’s success and the initial indications surely are positive.
  • Redi-Go ranked second and 502 units were shipped last month. The model sales fell -64% YoY and -39% MoM. All focus on selling Magnite?
  • Kicks records dismal figures yet again. Not even 100 units could be sold in Dec’20!
  • Both Go & Go+ registers ZERO sales in Dec’20.

December 2020 Car Sales – Snapshot

Around 2,76,412 passenger cars were sold in the Indian market for December 2020. The sales increased by 17.7% in Dec’20 v/s Dec’19.

It is encouraging to see the Indian Passenger Vehicle industry recording growth FIVE months in succession. After a 19.6% YoY growth in Aug (source), 31.14% growth in Sep’20 (source), 17.5% growth in Oct’20 (source) and 8.8% growth in Nov’20 (source) – the industry has registered almost 18% YoY growth in Dec’20. Do note that the growth is against a low base in last year due to BS6 transition. However; a lot of fast selling models are now commanding a waiting period of 2-9 months which is a very positive sign for the industry.

OEM-wise Sales Snapshot for December 2020 –

  • Maruti Suzuki retains >50% Market Share in Dec’20. However; its MS plummeted by -1.4% YoY.
  • Tata Motors continues its dream run and grew a phenomenal 84% YoY and the growth was one of the highest in the Industry! Tata Motors also recorded the highest Market Share growth in Dec’20 (it jumped from 5.4% in Dec’19 to 8.5% in Dec’20).
  • Kia Motors India volumes saw a 154% YoY increase. But; it was pushed to FIFTH position in the table. M&M regained its fourth spot and was a comfortable >4.2k units ahead of Kia.
  • Hyundai grew a moderate 25% YoY and held to its Market Share by 1% v/s Last Year.
  • MG crossed 4k volumes for second consecutive month! Its YoY growth was a stellar 32.7% and overtook the likes of VW & Ford in Dec’20!

Tractor Sales Statistics for December 2020 – India

Around 60,717 tractors were sold in the Indian market for December 2020 and the Tractor Industry registered a YoY growth of 42%!

The Tractor Industry has been the exceptional performer in the Covid era and the sales have shot up much ahead of expectations. The spike in sales is attributed to better monsoon season, easy finance availability, increased MSPs and market rates realization. The agricultural sector wasn’t impacted that much by the pandemic, in comparison to urban areas.

The OEMwise Tractor Sales for December 2020 is as shown below –

  • The Tractor Industry registered an increase in sales to 60,717 units in Dec’20 from 42,806 units in Dec’19. The YoY Growth Analysis and the Market Share statistics is as highlighted above.
  • M&M and Swaraj were the Market Leader and India’s largest selling Tractor manufacturer for December 2020. It sold 21,173 units and commanded a Market Share of 34.8%. However; the OEM registered a Market Share fall of -5.3%.
  • TAFE grew an impressive 59.6% YoY and was the second best tractor manufacturer for the month. It was able to increase its Market Share to 18.2% in Dec’20 v/s 16.2% in Dec’19.
  • International Tractors Limited (Sonalika) saw a YoY growth of massive 72% and its Market Share shot up to 14% in Dec’20 from 11.5% in Dec’19!
  • Escorts recorded one of the highest YoY growth in Dec’20 and was just 85 units short of 4th ranked John Deere. Escorts also had the highest Market Share increase in Dec’20.

Tractors Retail Sales Statistics – November 2020

Tractors was the category to register the highest YoY growth in November 2020. Tractors registration continued its positive momentum showing a growth of 8.5% in Nov’20 v/s Nov’19.

  • Mahindra + Swaraj commanded a Market Share of 41.53% in November 2020 and was the No.1 Tractor OEM in terms of Retail volumes for Nov’20. Do note that while M&M lost -0.85% Market Share; Swaraj’s Market Share increased by 1.18% YoY.
  • Sonalika outsold TAFE again in Nov’20 and recorded a Market Share of 11.6% in November 2020. Sonalika has been extremely consistent in the past few months and the sales growth is a testimony
  • TAFE registered sales growth too and grew 13.27% in Nov 2020 v/s Nov 2019. It saw its market share increase by 0.48% YoY.
  • Escorts recorded the highest market share fall of -1.38% and was one of the few Tractor manufacturers to register a YoY drop in sales.
