Volkswagen Launches Highline Plus-Based Polo and Vento TSI Editions With Lower Prices

Volkswagen just launched TSI Edition of 2020 Polo and Vento. The TSI Edition gets black roof, black ORVMs and stickers. More importantly, they get a price cut over the comparable Highline Plus variants. The normal Polo Highline Plus costs Rs. 8.02 lakh with a manual transmission. The TSI Edition costs Rs. 7.89 lakh – Rs. 13,000 less. That price drop is not as exciting as that of the Vento. The top-spec variant of the regular Vento in Highline Plus trim costs Rs. 11.99 lakh. The Vento TSI Edition costs Rs. 10.99 lakh – a full 6-figure price drop.

The Polo otherwise retails for anywhere between Rs. 5.82 lakh and Rs. 8.02 lakh for the manual transmission variants. The Polo Highline Plus automatic costs Rs. 9.13 lakh and the Polo GT costs Rs. 9.6 lakh (ex-showroom). It’s worth noting that the Polo’s lower two variants get a normal 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine. The non-turbo engine gets a 5-speed manual transmission. The turbo engine is only available in the Highline Plus and GT variants.

The MT variants of the Vento cost between Rs. 8.86 lakh and Rs. 11.99 lakh. The AT variants of the Vento costs Rs. 12.1 lakh and 13.3 lakh and it’s only available in the top 2 trims. The Vento is only available with the 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine across the variant lineup.

Pros n Cons – VW TSI Edition

You could’ve also scored similar or better discounts with some haggling at the dealership. However, there are inherent benefits for having a lower ex-showroom price. The biggest direct saving comes in the form of lower registration costs. As registration and road taxes are calculated based on ex-showroom price, even bargaining hard doesn’t help cut it down.

On the flip side, these are 10-year-old cars in dire need of an upgrade. Granted, understated German designs age gracefully. But 10 years is stretching a bit too far. Not to mention, internationally, the Polo received its generation update a couple of years ago.

Rumour – Renault Triber AMT Automatic To Come in Top 3 Variants

A recent report from Autocar India suggests that the Renault may offer the Triber AMT automatic transmission in the top 3 variants. The Triber AMT was first shown at the 2020 Auto Expo. It’s likely to go on sale on May 18. The Triber is available in 4 variants with prices ranging from Rs. 4.99 lakh to Rs. 6.82 lakh. The automatic transmission could add a premium of about Rs. 50,000 over the comparable RXL, RXT and RXZ variants.

Even though it borrows Kwid’s 1.0-litre normal petrol engine, the 5-speed AMT implementation is different in the Triber. The Kwid doesn’t get a manual override mode to select the desired ratio manually. The Triber AMT will get this option. Other than that, the Triber’s petrol engine is tuned to deliver better low-end torque than the Kwid’s. After all, the Kwid doesn’t need to haul as much weight.

Reportedly, Renault is also preparing a turbocharged variant of this engine, which will power their sub-4m SUV. This engine could eventually land under the hood of the Triber. The people haulier could really use some extra bottom-end torque from the turbocharged motor. That engine could get a 6-speed manual transmission.
