Kia Sorento Hybrid Specifications

One of the biggest talking points of the India-spec Sorento is its strong-hybrid powertrain.

It uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine combined with an electric motor.

The combined system produces 230 hp and 380 Nm and sends power through a 6-speed automatic transmission. Lower variants are front-wheel drive, while the HTX and HTX(A) versions are available with AWD.

The Sorento also becomes one of the most distinctive hybrids in the Indian market because it combines a turbocharged petrol engine with a strong-hybrid system, rather than the naturally aspirated hybrid setups commonly seen in this segment.

Kia Sorento Diesel Specifications

Kia is also offering the Sorento with its familiar large-capacity diesel engine.

Like the hybrid, the diesel is offered in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations.

Drive and Terrain Modes

The Sorento gets four selectable drive modes:

Normal, Eco, Sport and Smart.

AWD versions additionally provide three terrain modes:

Snow, Sand and Mud.

These modes reinforce the Sorento’s positioning as a more premium and versatile three-row SUV rather than simply a larger alternative to the Seltos.

6-Seater and 7-Seater Layouts

Another notable aspect of the Sorento is the availability of both 6-seat and 7-seat configurations.

The 6-seater gets individual captain seats in the second row, while the 7-seater gets a conventional bench seat.

The 6-seat layout is available from the HTK trim onwards, with Kia charging approximately ₹20,000 over the corresponding 7-seat version.

The second-row seats can also be electrically folded, while the 6-seat version additionally offers ventilation for the middle-row captain chairs.

Kia Sorento Interior and Features

The Sorento significantly steps up Kia’s premium positioning in India.

The cabin features a dual-screen layout comprising:

  • 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster

  • 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen

Kia is also offering multiple customisable interface themes inspired by Marvel, Disney and Pixar, giving the infotainment and instrument cluster interface a more personalised appearance.

Other major equipment includes:

  • Panoramic sunroof

  • 12-speaker Bose sound system

  • Head-up display

  • Powered tailgate

  • Wireless smartphone charger

  • Rotary gear selector

  • 10-way powered front seats

  • Front-seat ventilation

  • Adjustable lumbar support

  • Boss mode for the front passenger seat

  • Ventilated second-row seats on selected 6-seat variants

  • Leatherette upholstery

The interior is offered with dual-tone cabin themes including grey-black and beige-black.

Kia Sorento Gets Live Gen AI

One of the more interesting technology additions is Kia’s real-time generative AI-based voice assistant.

Kia had already confirmed Live Gen AI for the India-spec Sorento ahead of launch, and the system represents a major step forward from conventional predefined voice-command systems.

The India-spec Sorento is also the first Sorento globally to receive this implementation of real-time generative AI technology.

Kia Sorento Safety Features

Safety equipment is another major focus area.

Key features include:

  • 10 airbags

  • Level 2+ ADAS

  • Digital inside rear-view mirror

  • Front and rear dashcams

  • Automatic parking assistance

  • Electronic stability systems

  • Surround-view assistance on higher trims

The ADAS-equipped versions are identified by the “(A)” designation in the variant nomenclature.

Kia Sorento Exterior Design

The India-spec Sorento is based on the facelifted fourth-generation MQ4 model.

At the front, it features Kia’s signature Tiger Nose grille, vertically stacked LED headlights and distinctive Y-shaped LED daytime running lamps.

A wide central air intake, LED fog lamps and silver-finished skid-plate detailing add to its SUV stance.

The side profile gets:

  • 19-inch dual-tone alloy wheels

  • Roof rails

  • Chrome window garnish

  • Black wheel-arch cladding

  • Chrome detailing on the front fenders

At the rear, the Sorento features L-shaped LED tail lamps, a roof-mounted spoiler, rear washer and wiper, dual exhaust outlets and silver skid-plate styling.

Kia Sorento Rivals in India

The ₹27.99 lakh introductory starting price places the Sorento in an interesting position.

Its competitive set spans conventional premium three-row SUVs as well as more expensive monocoque offerings.

Key rivals are expected to include:

Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tayron and Toyota Fortuner, while higher Sorento variants will overlap with SUVs positioned considerably further up the premium ladder.

The hybrid's aggressive starting price could prove particularly important because buyers get a three-row layout, strong-hybrid technology and premium equipment without having to move directly into the ₹40 lakh-plus bracket.

Why the ₹27.99 Lakh Price Matters

Before launch, estimates had placed the Sorento substantially higher, with figures of roughly ₹30-40 lakh being discussed depending on specification.

The actual ₹27.99 lakh introductory entry price therefore makes Kia's strategy much more aggressive than expected.

There is a substantial ₹12.20 lakh spread between the entry-level HTE hybrid and the top-spec HTX(A) diesel AWD 6-seater, allowing Kia to cover multiple buyer profiles within the premium three-row SUV segment.

The base hybrid could appeal to buyers prioritising fuel efficiency and technology, while the diesel AWD versions are more likely to attract customers looking for high torque, highway capability and an SUV-oriented drivetrain.

Auto Punditz Take

The Sorento could emerge as one of Kia India's most strategically important launches yet.

Rather than positioning it purely as an expensive imported flagship, Kia has built a surprisingly wide range around the Sorento – starting at ₹27.99 lakh and offering buyers strong-hybrid or diesel power, FWD or AWD, six or seven seats, and progressively richer equipment.

The 1.6-litre turbo strong hybrid producing 230 hp and 380 Nm is particularly interesting. India has seen strong hybrids gain acceptance rapidly, but combining the technology with a turbocharged engine and AWD gives the Sorento a distinctive proposition.

The diesel is equally important. With 193 hp and 442 Nm, an 8-speed DCT and available AWD, it addresses traditional premium-SUV buyers who still place a high priority on torque and long-distance usability.

Pricing could ultimately be the Sorento's strongest weapon. At ₹27.99 lakh, Kia has created considerably more distance between the Sorento and traditional ₹40 lakh-plus premium SUVs than many expected before launch.

The key question will now be whether Kia can translate the Sorento's extensive specification list and aggressive introductory pricing into meaningful volumes in a segment where established nameplates such as the Fortuner and Kodiaq carry considerable brand equity.

For buyers seeking a technology-heavy, premium three-row SUV with multiple powertrain and seating configurations, however, the Sorento has entered the Indian market with a genuinely compelling proposition.
