Electric SUVs drive the next phase of EV growth

The H1 2026 rankings clearly demonstrate that India’s electric vehicle market is becoming increasingly SUV-centric.

Eight of the top 10 models were SUVs or crossover-style vehicles. New products such as the Mahindra XEV 9S, Tata Harrier EV and Maruti e Vitara quickly secured meaningful market shares, while established compact electric cars such as the Tiago EV, Tigor EV and Citroen eC3 lost ground.

Tata Motors placed seven models among the top 20, including the Nexon EV, Punch EV, Harrier EV, Curvv EV, Tiago EV, Tigor EV and Sierra EV. Mahindra secured five positions through the XEV 9S, XEV 9e, BE 6, XUV 3XO EV and XUV400. The MG Windsor retained the overall crown, but its falling market share shows how quickly competition is intensifying. With more manufacturers entering the segment and consumers receiving a wider choice of electric SUVs, India’s electric passenger vehicle market appears set for another period of strong growth in the second half of 2026.
