Best-Selling Sedans in September 2026: Maruti Dzire Leads with 51% Share, Hyundai Aura Surges 40%, Tata Aeris Enters Top 5
India's sedan market recorded a modest recovery in September 2026, with total sales reaching 35,119 units, registering a 5.3% year-on-year (YoY) growth compared to 33,346 units sold in September 2025. While SUVs continue to dominate the passenger vehicle landscape, the sedan segment has demonstrated resilience, supported by strong demand for compact sedans and the arrival of new models.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire continued its dominance, accounting for more than half of total sedan sales. The Hyundai Aura emerged as a strong performer with nearly 40% annual growth, while the newly introduced Tata Aeris secured fourth position in the rankings.
However, the picture was less encouraging for several established midsize sedans, including the Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia, both of which reported significant sales declines.

Model-Wise Sales Analysis
1. Maruti Suzuki Dzire – 17,754 Units
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire retained its position as India's best-selling sedan, recording 17,754 units in September 2026. Despite an 11.4% YoY decline from 20,038 units in September 2025, the Dzire commanded an impressive 50.6% segment share. Its widespread availability, fuel-efficient powertrain options, competitive ownership costs and popularity among both private buyers and fleet operators continue to support its leadership. Interestingly, the Dzire alone sold more units than all the other nine sedans combined, underlining its dominance.
2. Hyundai Aura – 7,530 Units
The Hyundai Aura emerged as one of September's strongest performers, registering 7,530 units against 5,387 units a year earlier. With a 39.8% YoY increase, the Aura secured a 21.4% segment share and maintained its position as India's second-best-selling sedan. The growth suggests healthy demand for Hyundai's compact sedan offering, particularly in a segment where affordability, running costs and practicality remain important purchase considerations.
3. Honda Amaze – 3,286 Units
The Honda Amaze recorded 3,286 units in September 2026, representing a healthy 25.9% YoY growth over 2,610 units sold in September 2025. With a 9.4% segment share, the Amaze secured third position. Honda's compact sedan continues to appeal to customers seeking a practical family car with an emphasis on comfort and ease of driving.
4. Tata Aeris – 2,406 Units
The Tata Aeris made a notable entry into the sedan rankings, registering 2,406 units in September 2026 and capturing 6.9% of the overall segment. With no corresponding sales recorded in September 2025, a YoY comparison is not applicable. The Aeris's fourth-place ranking makes it an important new contributor to sedan volumes. Its performance over the coming months will determine whether it can establish a sustained position among India's leading sedans.
5. Volkswagen Virtus – 1,172 Units
The Volkswagen Virtus recorded 1,172 units, declining 28.9% from 1,648 units in September 2025. Despite the decline, the Virtus remained the highest-selling model among the Virtus, Verna, Slavia and City, with a 3.3% overall sedan market share. The sales contraction highlights the challenges facing traditional midsize sedans as consumer preference remains strongly oriented towards SUVs.
6. Hyundai Verna – 762 Units
The Hyundai Verna posted 762 units, registering a modest 5.1% increase over the 725 units sold in September 2025. The Verna accounted for 2.2% of total sedan sales. Although its volumes remained relatively low, it was among the few established midsize sedans to report positive annual growth.
7. Skoda Slavia – 709 Units
The Skoda Slavia recorded 709 units in September 2026, compared to 1,339 units a year earlier. Its 47.1% YoY decline was the steepest among the ten models in the ranking. The Slavia's market share stood at 2.0%, reflecting the pressure on midsize sedans amid competition from SUVs and other body styles.
8. Tata Tigor – 686 Units
The Tata Tigor registered 686 units, declining 29.0% from 966 units in September 2025.
With a 2.0% market share, the Tigor slipped to eighth position. The addition of the Aeris also means Tata Motors now has two models represented in the top ten sedan rankings.
9. Honda City – 574 Units
The Honda City recorded 574 units in September 2026, registering 15.7% YoY growth over 496 units in the corresponding month last year. Despite relatively modest volumes, the City remained in positive territory, accounting for 1.6% of the overall sedan market.
10. Toyota Camry – 240 Units
The Toyota Camry rounded off the top ten with 240 units, compared to 137 units in September 2025. Its 75.2% YoY increase was the highest percentage growth among models with a year-earlier sales base. Although the Camry's overall segment share remained limited at 0.7%, its performance indicates improving volumes in the premium sedan space.
Key Highlights – September 2026
Compact Sedans Continue to Dominate the Market
One of the most important takeaways from September 2026 is the overwhelming dominance of the compact sedan category.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Aura and Honda Amaze collectively sold 28,570 units, representing approximately 81.4% of total sedan sales.
This concentration illustrates how sedan demand in India remains heavily skewed towards affordable, practical offerings rather than larger, more expensive models. The Dzire, Aura and Amaze also collectively registered 1,135 additional units over September 2025, even though the Dzire itself experienced a decline.
Midsize Sedans Face Continued Pressure
The Volkswagen Virtus, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Slavia and Honda City collectively recorded 3,217 units in September 2026, compared with 4,208 units in September 2025. That translates into a combined 23.6% YoY decline, despite positive performances from the Verna and City.
Model | Sep'25 | Sep'26 | YoY |
VW Virtus | 1,648 | 1,172 | -28.9% |
Hyundai Verna | 725 | 762 | +5.1% |
Skoda Slavia | 1,339 | 709 | -47.1% |
Honda City | 496 | 574 | +15.7% |
Total | 4,208 | 3,217 | -23.6% |
The combined performance highlights the challenges faced by traditional midsize sedans, especially as similarly priced SUVs offer higher ground clearance, a commanding driving position and broader appeal among Indian buyers.
Tata Aeris Adds Fresh Volumes to the Sedan Market
The Tata Aeris contributed 2,406 units in September 2026, exceeding the overall sedan market's net annual growth of 1,773 units. This is a significant observation. Excluding the Aeris, sales of the remaining nine models totalled 32,713 units, down 1.9% from the corresponding September 2025 total.
In other words, the sedan segment's overall growth in September 2026 was entirely dependent on the additional volumes contributed by the Aeris, based on the supplied dataset. This does not necessarily imply that all Aeris sales represent incremental demand, as some buyers may have shifted from other sedans. Nevertheless, the model has emerged as an important contributor to the segment's monthly performance.

Auto Punditz Take: Sedan Market Grows, but Recovery Remains Uneven
September 2026 presents a mixed picture for India's sedan market. On the positive side, overall sales increased by 5.3%, the Hyundai Aura and Honda Amaze registered strong double-digit growth, and the Tata Aeris brought additional volumes to the category. The Toyota Camry also recorded an encouraging increase, albeit on a smaller base.
However, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire's double-digit decline, along with significant contractions for the Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia and Tata Tigor, suggests that demand remains uneven across models. The biggest structural challenge continues to be the sedan market's heavy dependence on compact offerings. With the top three models accounting for more than 81% of total sales, the segment has limited diversification in terms of volume contributors.
The key question going forward is whether new products such as the Tata Aeris can generate sustainable incremental demand or whether sedan sales will continue to depend predominantly on a handful of established compact models. For now, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire remains the undisputed leader, while the Hyundai Aura's strong growth and Tata Aeris's entry are among the most notable developments of September 2026.
