India’s sub-4 metre SUV segment continued its strong run in May 2026, with total sales of 1,17,889 units, compared to 98,966 units in May 2025. This translates to a healthy 19.1% YoY growth, underlining the segment’s importance in the Indian passenger vehicle market.
The segment remains highly competitive, with Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai, Kia and Mahindra fighting aggressively for volume share. The top three models alone contributed over 50% of the segment, showing how concentrated demand remains around a few strong nameplates.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx emerged as the best-selling sub-4m SUV in May 2026 with 20,686 units sold. The crossover registered a strong 52.3% YoY growth over 13,584 units sold in May 2025. Fronx commanded a 17.5% segment share, making it the leader in this highly contested category.
Tata Motors had two models in the top three — Punch and Nexon — together contributing 39,308 units. Tata Punch ranked second with 20,208 units, growing by 53.9% YoY from 13,133 units in May 2025. It held a 17.1% segment share, just behind the Fronx.
Tata Nexon stood third with 19,100 units, posting a robust 45.8% YoY growth over 13,096 units last year. With a 16.2% share, Nexon remained one of the strongest sub-4m SUV brands in India.
Maruti Suzuki Brezza ranked fourth with 13,425 units in May 2026. However, unlike Fronx, Punch and Nexon, Brezza recorded a 13.8% YoY decline from 15,566 units sold in May 2025.
Hyundai Venue secured fifth position with 11,714 units, registering a strong 55.8% YoY growth from 7,520 units in May 2025. Venue’s segment share stood at 9.9%.

Mahindra 3XO ranked seventh with 6,717 units, down 15.5% YoY from 7,952 units in May 2025. Its segment share stood at 5.7%.
Hyundai Exter followed in eighth place with 6,595 units, growing 11.8% YoY from 5,899 units.
Skoda Kylaq ranked ninth with 3,443 units, recording a 30.4% YoY decline from 4,949 units in May 2025. Its segment share stood at 2.9%.
Toyota Taisor sold 2,496 units, down 17.8% YoY, while the Maruti Suzuki Jimny registered 516 units, declining 24.3% YoY. Jimny remained the lowest-selling model in the list with just 0.4% segment share.
Nissan Magnite was one of the notable gainers lower down the table. It sold 1,665 units, growing 24.8% YoY from 1,334 units in May 2025.
Renault Kiger also posted positive growth, selling 656 units, up 19.1% YoY from 551 units last year.
