CNG Car Sales August 2026: Volumes Cross 1.05 Lakh Units, Maruti Leads With Nearly 70% Share

India’s CNG passenger vehicle market maintained strong momentum in August 2026, with combined dispatches of 1,05,249 units, up from 72,062 units in August 2025. This translates into a robust 46.1% year-on-year growth.

Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the CNG market, accounting for almost seven out of every ten CNG cars dispatched during the month. Tata Motors, however, recorded the strongest percentage growth among the major manufacturers, while Hyundai also expanded its CNG volumes significantly. At the model level, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga remained India’s highest-selling CNG car, followed closely by the Dzire. Tata Punch emerged as the highest-selling non-Maruti CNG model and more than doubled its volumes compared with last year.

• Maruti Suzuki remained comfortably ahead of every other manufacturer with 73,621 CNG cars dispatched in August 2026, compared with 52,214 units a year earlier. That represents 41% YoY growth, while Maruti commanded an enormous 69.9% share of the CNG passenger vehicle market.

• The strength of Maruti’s CNG portfolio is also evident in the model rankings. The company occupied seven of the top 10 positions, led by the Ertiga, Dzire and Wagon R. The newly introduced Victoris CNG contributed 6,833 units, immediately placing it among the highest-volume CNG models.

• Tata Motors registered 18,438 CNG vehicle dispatches, up sharply from 10,805 units in August 2025. Its 70.6% YoY increase was the strongest growth among the four manufacturers in the data.

• Tata's market share stood at 17.5%. The Punch was the key volume driver with 7,767 units, followed by the Nexon at 6,178 units. Tiago, Altroz and Tigor completed Tata's CNG portfolio.

• Tata's growth also highlights the increasing acceptance of CNG beyond conventional hatchbacks and sedans, particularly in SUVs such as the Punch and Nexon.

• Hyundai dispatched 10,622 CNG cars in August 2026, compared with 7,201 units during the corresponding month last year. Volumes increased 47.5% YoY, giving Hyundai a 10.1% share of the CNG market.

• The Aura remained Hyundai's biggest CNG contributor with 6,485 units, followed by the Exter and Grand i10.

• Toyota recorded 2,568 CNG dispatches, registering growth of 39.4% over the 1,842 units dispatched in August 2025. Its share of the segment stood at 2.4%.

• The Urban Cruiser Hyryder remained Toyota's biggest CNG seller at 1,215 units. Taisor contributed 608 units, while Rumion CNG volumes jumped to 574 units from an unusually low base of just three units in August 2025.

• Ertiga retained the number-one position in India's CNG car market with 13,352 units. However, volumes were marginally lower than the 13,447 units recorded in August 2025, translating into a 1% YoY decline. Despite the slight fall, the Ertiga remained the only CNG model to cross 13,000 units during the month.

• Dzire was close behind with 12,963 units, growing 26% YoY from 10,316 units. The sedan remained one of Maruti Suzuki's biggest CNG volume contributors.

• Wagon R CNG dispatches increased from 7,096 units to 9,405 units, representing 34% YoY growth. Its strong performance further reinforces the importance of factory-fitted CNG in the entry-level hatchback market.

• Punch was India's highest-selling non-Maruti CNG model in August. Dispatches jumped from 3,838 units to 7,767 units, a substantial 102% YoY increase. It also emerged as Tata Motors' highest-volume CNG product.

• Brezza CNG sales stood at 7,608 units, up from 5,801 units last year. The compact SUV recorded 31% YoY growth.

• Victoris entered the CNG sales chart with 6,833 units in August 2026.

• Aura remained Hyundai's biggest CNG seller with 6,485 units, compared with 4,855 units last year. Sales increased by 34% YoY.

• Nexon recorded 6,178 CNG dispatches, up from 4,419 units. That represents 40% YoY growth, making it Tata's second-largest CNG model after the Punch.

• Eeco CNG volumes rose 20% YoY, from 5,090 units to 6,107 units. The Fronx recorded one of the strongest performances among Maruti's major CNG models. Sales increased from 3,095 units to 6,024 units, translating into 95% YoY growth.
