Electric car sales in India September 2026 showing Tata Motors leading Vahan registrations with 14,792 units and 42.2% market share

Key Takeaways

September 2026 highlighted a substantial broadening of India’s electric passenger vehicle market. Total registrations surged 95.4% YoY, while sequential growth remained healthy at 10.3%.

Tata Motors remained the clear market leader, but newer and expanding manufacturers are increasingly contributing to EV volumes. Mahindra maintained more than one-fifth of the market, while VinFast climbed to an 8.5% share. Kia and BYD also recorded particularly strong sequential growth of 48.4% and 47.4%, respectively.

At the same time, MG’s registration volumes continued to grow, but its market share fell sharply as competitors expanded at a much faster pace. With 35,048 registrations in a single month, September 2026 indicates that electric passenger vehicles are moving into a materially larger volume bracket in India.
