FASTag OneTag Launched: Users Can Switch Banks Without Replacing Existing Tag
FASTag users in India are set to get significantly more flexibility in choosing their service provider. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has unveiled OneTag, a new FASTag portability system that will allow motorists to shift their existing FASTag from one issuer bank to another without replacing the physical tag fixed on their vehicle.
The new facility was launched at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai and has been jointly developed by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
For motorists, OneTag brings FASTag closer to the concept of mobile-number portability: the service provider can change while the underlying identity of the tag remains intact.

What Changes With FASTag OneTag?
Under the existing system, motorists who want to move from one FASTag issuer to another generally need to close their current FASTag account, complete onboarding with the new issuer and obtain another physical tag.
OneTag is designed to eliminate this process.
After portability, motorists will be able to retain:
The same physical FASTag sticker
The same FASTag Tag ID
The same vehicle registration number
Only the issuer managing the FASTag account will change.
This means motorists will no longer need to remove the existing RFID sticker from the windscreen and install a new one simply because they prefer another bank or FASTag service provider.
FASTag Portability Through Rajmargyatra App
The portability process is expected to be offered through NHAI's Rajmargyatra mobile application.
According to details announced with OneTag, a user wanting to change the FASTag issuer will undergo eligibility and security verification before giving consent and selecting the preferred new issuer.
The broad process is expected to involve:
Opening the FASTag portability option through Rajmargyatra.
Completing eligibility and security verification.
Selecting the preferred participating FASTag issuer.
Providing consent for portability.
Completing onboarding requirements with the new issuer.
Migrating the existing FASTag to the new provider.
The physical FASTag already installed on the vehicle will continue to be used after the migration.
What Happens to the Existing FASTag Wallet?
The existing FASTag issuer will continue to handle matters linked to the old account during the migration process.
This includes settling any pending transactions and processing applicable refunds from the existing FASTag wallet.
Once portability is successfully completed, the new issuer will take over responsibility for servicing the FASTag account.
NPCI will provide the central technology infrastructure supporting OneTag and will update the issuer information within the National Electronic Toll Collection, or NETC,
network.
Toll Plazas Will Not Need Any Changes
An important aspect of OneTag is that the change takes place largely at the issuer and NETC network level.
Toll plazas will not need a separate payment or transaction process for portable FASTags.
Toll operators and acquiring banks will continue processing FASTag transactions through the existing NETC ecosystem.
For motorists, this should mean that changing the FASTag issuer does not alter the way the tag works while crossing a toll plaza.
Why FASTag Portability Matters
FASTag interoperability already allows a tag issued by one participating bank or payment provider to work across compatible toll plazas throughout India.
OneTag takes interoperability one step further by making the issuer itself portable.
This could become particularly useful for consumers dissatisfied with their existing FASTag provider because of issues such as customer service, wallet management, recharge experience or account-related problems.
Instead of replacing the physical tag, motorists will eventually be able to choose another participating issuer while continuing to use the same FASTag.
Greater portability could also encourage competition among FASTag issuers, potentially pushing banks and payment providers to improve their service quality and customer experience.
Could Reduce FASTag Reissuance Costs
There is another benefit beyond customer convenience.
Every time a customer changes an issuer under the current process, another physical RFID tag may have to be produced, dispatched and installed.
By allowing the existing tag to remain with the vehicle, OneTag could reduce unnecessary tag production and reissuance.
This can lower administrative and logistics costs across the FASTag ecosystem while also cutting waste associated with replacing otherwise functional RFID stickers.
FASTag Has Over 98% Penetration
FASTag has become the dominant method of electronic toll collection across India's national highway network.
According to figures cited during the OneTag announcement, FASTag penetration has crossed 98% in India.
Around 13 crore NETC FASTags have been issued so far, of which approximately 6 crore tags are active.
FASTag uses Radio Frequency Identification, or RFID, technology to identify vehicles and automatically process toll payments through the NETC ecosystem operated by NPCI.
With such a large installed base, even a seemingly small change such as issuer portability can have a significant impact on millions of motorists.
OneTag vs Existing FASTag System
Feature | Existing Process | OneTag Portability |
Change FASTag issuer | Existing account generally closed | Issuer can be changed |
Physical FASTag replacement | Normally required | Not required |
Tag ID | New tag may get new ID | Existing Tag ID retained |
Vehicle registration | Re-onboarded with new tag | Existing registration retained |
Portability platform | No central portability mechanism | Rajmargyatra app |
Toll-plaza changes | Not applicable | No additional changes required |
When Will OneTag Be Available?
OneTag was unveiled on September 11, 2026, but the initial announcement describes FASTag portability as a facility that users will soon be able to access.
The portability option is expected to be introduced through the Rajmargyatra app, with participating FASTag issuers integrated into the system.
Motorists should therefore wait for the portability facility to become active in the application and for their preferred issuer to support OneTag before attempting to migrate.
Auto Punditz Take
OneTag addresses one of the less visible but genuine inconveniences in India's FASTag ecosystem.
FASTags were already interoperable at toll plazas, but customers remained effectively tied to the bank or provider that issued the physical sticker unless they were willing to replace it.
Issuer portability removes that friction.
The bigger impact, however, could come from competition. Once motorists can move between issuers without changing the RFID sticker, banks will have a stronger incentive to differentiate themselves through better apps, quicker grievance resolution, easier wallet management and stronger customer service.
With more than 98% FASTag penetration and crores of active tags already on Indian vehicles, OneTag is a logical next step in making electronic tolling more consumer-friendly.
The real test will now be how quickly the feature is rolled out across issuers and how seamless the migration experience is inside the Rajmargyatra application.
