Exterior Design – Hyundai's New Art of Steel Philosophy

The new Bayon adopts Hyundai's evolving Art of Steel design philosophy, giving the SUV a distinctive identity compared with the brand's existing models. The front fascia features a sculpted bonnet, slim H-shaped LED daytime running lights and a split headlamp arrangement. The prominent grille, contrasting bumper elements and angular surfaces contribute to its upright SUV character.

Along the sides, the Bayon features pronounced character lines, squared-off wheel arches, black body cladding, geometric alloy wheels and roof rails. At the rear, Hyundai has incorporated distinctive LED lighting elements, a contrasting horizontal panel, prominently positioned BAYON lettering and a roof-mounted spoiler.

The overall styling is noticeably more angular than that of the earlier European Bayon, reflecting Hyundai's efforts to give the India-spec model a stronger SUV identity.

The Bayon is reported to measure approximately 4.2 metres in length, placing it between the Venue and Creta in Hyundai's portfolio. Complete official dimensions remain to be confirmed.

Interior – Dual 12.3-Inch Screens and a Technology-Focused Cabin

The Bayon's interior represents a significant part of Hyundai's technology-led positioning. The cabin uses a dual-tone grey-and-black theme with a horizontally arranged dashboard and a curved panoramic display panel.

Two 12.3-inch screens provide infotainment and digital instrumentation functions.

Other visible interior highlights include a multifunction steering wheel carrying Hyundai's four-dot emblem, physical infotainment shortcut controls, rotary knobs and a vertically arranged centre section incorporating climate controls. The dashboard shares similarities with Hyundai's new-generation i20 revealed for Brazil, although the Bayon's overall cabin is tailored to its SUV positioning.

The new Bayon also incorporates Hyundai's Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC), with NVIDIA-accelerated infotainment technology. This system supports online navigation, split-screen functionality, personalised user profiles and quick-access vehicle controls.

Hyundai's First Generative AI Voice Assistant in India

One of the biggest highlights of the new Bayon is the introduction of Hyundai Motor India's first generative AI voice assistant. Unlike conventional voice recognition systems that primarily depend on predefined commands, the Bayon's AI assistant has been designed to understand more conversational requests.

The system combines intelligence from Perplexity with voice AI technology powered by SoundHound AI. Drivers and passengers can use the assistant for activities such as finding restaurants, checking weather information, planning travel itineraries, locating hotels and receiving sports updates. The generative AI assistant currently supports English.

Separately, Hyundai has incorporated more than 500 embedded voice commands that can operate without an internet connection. These support English, Hindi, Hinglish, Tamil, Bengali and Telugu. The infotainment and instrument-cluster interfaces support 10 regional and two international languages, strengthening the SUV's appeal to a wider Indian audience.

Connected Technology – 70+ Features and OTA Software Updates

The Bayon will also offer Hyundai Bluelink connectivity with more than 70 connected-car features. These include remote vehicle operations, vehicle information access, location services, navigation-related functionality and connectivity through compatible smartphones and smartwatches.

Another important feature is support for over-the-air software updates. Hyundai says up to 19 vehicle controllers can receive compatible software updates remotely, reducing the need for dealership visits for certain software-related improvements. However, update availability will depend on Hyundai's rollout decisions, network connectivity and other conditions. This emphasis on software functionality indicates Hyundai's intention to make the Bayon a technology-focused alternative in India's highly competitive SUV market.

Engine and Transmission – Proven 1.5-Litre Petrol Powertrain

Hyundai has confirmed that the India-spec Bayon will initially be offered with a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder MPi naturally aspirated petrol engine. The engine is also used in the Hyundai Creta and is known for its conventional, non-turbocharged configuration.

Transmission choices: 6-speed manual and Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT)

The IVT is Hyundai's continuously variable automatic transmission technology, designed to deliver smooth power delivery during city driving. For buyers seeking a relatively straightforward petrol powertrain rather than a turbocharged engine, the Bayon could represent an appealing option.

However, fuel-efficiency figures, acceleration performance and detailed driving characteristics have not yet been disclosed. Earlier industry reports suggested that a factory-fitted CNG version could join the lineup later. Hyundai has not confirmed a CNG variant as part of the initial launch range.

Safety – Global K Enhanced Platform

The Hyundai Bayon is based on the company's Global K Enhanced Platform. Hyundai states that the platform has been engineered to meet five-star Indian crash-safety standards. However, this does not mean the Bayon has already received a five-star Bharat NCAP rating. An independent crash-test result remains to be established.

Complete information about airbags, electronic safety systems, ADAS equipment and variant-wise safety features is still awaited.

Expected Price and Market Positioning

Hyundai has not officially announced Bayon prices. Earlier market estimates suggested an ex-showroom price range of approximately ₹9 lakh to ₹14 lakh, although this remains speculative until the formal price announcement.

The new model will give Hyundai another offering in the important ₹10–15 lakh SUV market, where buyers often compare vehicles across the upper compact-SUV and entry midsize-SUV segments. The Bayon is expected to compete with models such as the Maruti Suzuki Victoris, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and selected variants of other similarly priced SUVs.

Its positioning also gives Hyundai a second SUV offering below or alongside parts of the Creta lineup, potentially helping it attract customers who prioritise technology, design and petrol-engine convenience. The final price structure will determine how effectively Hyundai can distinguish the Bayon from the Venue and Creta.

Hyundai Bayon – Launch and Booking Details

Hyundai has scheduled the Bayon's India launch for October 26, 2026. Bookings are already open for ₹11,000 at authorised Hyundai dealerships and through Hyundai India's official website. Deliveries are planned for the festive season, with more precise timelines expected to be disclosed at launch. Hyundai is also expected to announce the complete variant lineup, pricing, colour options and additional specifications during the launch event.

Auto Punditz Take – Can the Bayon Create a New Space for Hyundai?

The Hyundai Bayon is an interesting addition to the company's SUV strategy. Instead of positioning the vehicle entirely around performance or powertrain innovation, Hyundai is placing considerable emphasis on connectivity, artificial intelligence and software-enabled functionality.

Its biggest differentiators could be the generative AI voice assistant, dual 12.3-inch screens, connected navigation cockpit and over-the-air update capability.

The familiar 1.5-litre petrol engine also gives Hyundai a proven mechanical foundation.

However, the Bayon faces three important challenges.

  • First, its pricing must create a compelling distinction from the Venue and Creta. A narrow price gap could lead to considerable overlap within Hyundai's own portfolio.

  • Second, buyers in this segment increasingly compare petrol, CNG and hybrid powertrain options on running costs. With only a naturally aspirated petrol engine confirmed for launch, the Bayon's fuel efficiency will be an important consideration.

  • Third, advanced connected technology is attractive, but practical factors such as rear-seat space, ride comfort, safety credentials, long-term reliability and ownership costs will remain central to purchasing decisions.

Our View: The Bayon has the potential to strengthen Hyundai's presence in the competitive midsize SUV market, particularly among buyers looking for a feature-rich petrol SUV. However, its success will depend less on the number of digital features and more on whether Hyundai can package those features at a competitive price. With the October 26 launch approaching, the Bayon's pricing, variant distribution and real-world practicality will be the next important details to watch.
