Hyundai Bayon Name Finalised for India-Bound SUV; Launch Expected Soon
Hyundai Motor India is preparing to expand its SUV portfolio with a new midsize offering, and Bayon name is confirmed production name for the upcoming model. The SUV, known internally by the codename Bc4i, has been undergoing testing in India for several months and is expected to be positioned below the Creta.
Hyundai has officially confirmed that a Bayon will join its Indian portfolio during FY2026-27. The company's FY26 financial results stated that one of its two new SUV nameplates for the current financial year will strengthen Hyundai's position in the midsize SUV segment. (Hyundai)
Hyundai Bayon Could Sit Between Venue and Creta
The India-spec Bayon is expected to occupy an interesting space in Hyundai's SUV line-up. At approximately 4.18 metres in length, it would be larger than the Venue but slightly smaller and potentially more affordable than the Creta. Hyundai's current SUV range already stretches from the Exter and Venue to the Creta, Alcazar and larger models. The addition of another midsize SUV would allow the manufacturer to target customers looking for something larger than conventional sub-four-metre SUVs without moving directly into higher Creta variants. The likely positioning would therefore look broadly like: Exter → Venue → Bayon → Creta → Alcazar. The exact hierarchy will ultimately depend on the Bayon's pricing and equipment levels.
India-Spec Bayon Will Differ From European Model
Despite sharing its name and architecture with the Bayon available overseas, the upcoming Indian SUV is not expected to be a straightforward copy of the European vehicle. The current international Bayon has a relatively low-slung crossover profile, whereas prototypes of the India-bound model point towards a more upright, SUV-like design tailored to Indian preferences.
Test vehicles have shown a tall bonnet, split lighting arrangement, substantial body cladding and a relatively boxy profile. Earlier reports indicate that the SUV will share its underlying platform with the global Bayon while receiving India-specific styling and engineering changes. The current global Bayon itself features Hyundai's latest design treatment, including a full-width LED lighting signature at the front and distinctive arrow-shaped rear lamps.
Hyundai's Camouflage May Have Also Teased the Bayon Name
One of the more interesting clues appeared on recently spotted test vehicles. A prototype was seen wearing camouflage featuring phrases such as "BRING IT ON", with the letters "ON" repeatedly highlighted. Similar words on the vehicle included Innovation, Transformation, Inspiration, Expression and Evolution.
Petrol and CNG Powertrains Expected
Hyundai has yet to publish the India-spec Bayon's complete technical specifications.
Current reports indicate that the SUV is likely to be offered primarily with petrol powertrains, while a factory-fitted CNG version is also expected. Autocar India has previously reported that naturally aspirated petrol and CNG options are likely for the model.
Earlier information has also linked the project with Hyundai's upcoming 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, although the final powertrain line-up has not yet been officially announced. Automatic and manual transmission options can also be expected depending on the engine configuration. For reference, the international Bayon is offered with turbo-petrol engines and manual as well as 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions in some markets.
Features Could Be a Major Focus
Given Hyundai's positioning strategy in India, the Bayon is likely to receive an extensive feature list. While the final equipment specifications remain unconfirmed, likely features could include a large touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, connected-car technology, automatic climate control, wireless smartphone connectivity, ventilated front seats on higher variants and an electric sunroof. Higher variants may also receive an ADAS package, although Hyundai has not yet confirmed the feature. Recent spy shots have indicated that the cabin will follow Hyundai's newer interior design direction rather than simply reproducing the current European Bayon dashboard.
Hyundai Bayon Expected Launch Timeline
Hyundai has already confirmed that its new midsize SUV will arrive during the current financial year, while company executives have separately indicated that the vehicle is part of the brand's festive-season product programme. Some reports point towards a launch around October 2026, although Hyundai has not publicly announced an exact date. Considering that prototypes are already undergoing advanced-stage testing, a formal reveal or teaser campaign could arrive before the launch.
Hyundai Bayon Expected Price
Pricing will be crucial because the Bayon will have to fit between two already established Hyundai products. An estimated starting price of around ₹9 lakh-₹10 lakh would give Hyundai sufficient separation from the Venue while keeping the Bayon below the core Creta range. Higher variants could extend towards ₹15 lakh-₹16 lakh, depending on engines and equipment. These prices remain estimates; Hyundai has not released official pricing.
Hyundai Bayon Expected Rivals
The upcoming SUV is likely to compete with crossover and midsize SUV models including the:
Maruti Suzuki Fronx
Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor
Renault Kiger
Nissan Magnite
Tata Curvv
Citroen Basalt
lower variants of larger midsize SUVs
Its approximately 4.2-metre footprint could also create some overlap with models including the Creta, Seltos, Grand Vitara and Victoris, depending on Hyundai's final pricing strategy.
Why the Bayon Matters for Hyundai India
The new SUV is part of a broader Hyundai product offensive. Hyundai Motor India has officially stated that it intends to launch two completely new SUV nameplates in FY2026-27. One will target the midsize SUV market, while the second will be a localised dedicated compact electric SUV.
The strategy is important because Hyundai currently relies heavily on the Creta in the rapidly growing midsize SUV segment. Adding another model would allow the company to pursue the same multi-product strategy already being used by manufacturers with more than one offering in this segment.

Auto Punditz Take
The bigger development isn't simply the Bayon name. Hyundai appears to be preparing a second high-volume SUV below the Creta, potentially filling the price and size gap between the Venue and Creta.
Retaining the Bayon badge would also connect the Indian model with an existing global Hyundai nameplate, although the India-spec SUV appears likely to receive substantial changes in styling, dimensions, equipment and powertrains. With the vehicle already testing extensively and Hyundai confirming a new midsize SUV for FY27, the next major information to watch will be the official announcement, engine specifications, variants and launch date.
