India Car Sales September 2026: Vahan Registrations Rise 32% YoY to 4.20 Lakh Units

India’s passenger vehicle market recorded a strong September 2026, with Vahan registrations reaching 4,20,359 units, up 31.8% year-on-year from 3,18,907 units in September 2025. Registrations also improved 2.6% month-on-monthcompared with 4,09,528 units in August 2026.


The September numbers show broad-based growth across most major carmakers, with Maruti Suzuki retaining a commanding lead, while Mahindra, Tata Motors and Hyundai continued to occupy the next three positions. Kia, Nissan and VinFast were among the brands that posted particularly strong year-on-year growth.

  • Maruti Suzuki remained India’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturer by registrations, recording 1,69,826 units in September 2026. Registrations increased by 30.1% YoY, adding nearly 39,300 units over September last year. Month-on-month volumes were almost unchanged from August’s 1,69,756 units. Maruti Suzuki’s market share stood at 40.4%, compared with 40.9% in September 2025, translating into a 0.5 percentage-point decline despite substantial volume growth.

  • Mahindra registered 57,817 units during September, representing 35.5% YoY growth and a healthy 7.8% MoM increase. Its market share improved from 13.4% a year ago to 13.8%, making Mahindra one of the major manufacturers to gain share during the period. Mahindra finished only 1,661 units ahead of Tata Motors, highlighting the continuing close competition between the two manufacturers.

  • Tata Motors occupied third position with 56,156 registrations, up 28.1% YoY from 43,847 units. However, Tata was one of the few manufacturers in the top 10 to register a month-on-month decline. Volumes dropped 3.3% from 58,045 units in August. Its market share stood at 13.4%, compared with 13.7% in September 2025.

  • Hyundai recorded 50,201 registrations, growing 31.5% YoY and 4.4% MoM. The company accounted for 11.9% of the market, broadly stable versus its 12.0% share in September 2025.

  • Toyota registered 28,212 units, up 21.4% YoY and 6.2% MoM. Its September market share stood at 6.7%, compared with 7.3% a year earlier.

  • Kia recorded a stronger growth rate, with registrations rising 45.9% YoY to 26,668 units. Month-on-month sales were also up 9.7%. Kia’s market share increased from 5.7% to 6.3%, a gain of 0.6 percentage points.

  • The top six manufacturers together accounted for approximately 92.5% of registrations, illustrating the high concentration of the Indian passenger vehicle market.

  • The combined Skoda-Volkswagen registrations stood at 8,468 units, up 13.8% YoY and 8.4% MoM.

  • MG Motor followed with 6,475 units, representing growth of 13.6% YoY and 4.8% over August.

  • Honda posted one of the stronger annual growth rates among established manufacturers. Registrations increased 42.5% YoY to 5,283 units, while market share improved from 1.2% to 1.3%.

  • Renault registered 3,411 units, up 33.1% YoY and 2.5% MoM.

  • Nissan posted a much stronger percentage increase, with registrations more than doubling to 2,967 units, compared with 1,379 units a year earlier. This translates to 115.2% YoY growth. Nissan’s market share improved from 0.4% to 0.7%.

  • VinFast registered 2,964 vehicles in September 2026, up sharply from 2,239 units in August, representing 32.4% month-on-month growth.

  • BYD registered 836 units, increasing 14.2% YoY. More notably, registrations rose 47.4% MoM from 567 units in August, the highest monthly growth rate in the table apart from brands with similarly small volumes.

  • Citroen registered 803 units, almost doubling from 406 units a year ago, although registrations were down 2.9% from August.

  • Jeep recorded 272 registrations, up 15.7% YoY and 39.5% MoM.
