Petrol Remains the Largest Fuel Category

Petrol vehicle sales increased from 12,23,451 units in H1 2025 to 13,42,304 units in H1 2026, registering 10% year-on-year growth.

Despite the volume increase, petrol’s market share declined from 56% to 52%. This indicates that alternative powertrains, particularly CNG and electric vehicles, expanded faster than the overall passenger vehicle market. The number of petrol-powered products also increased from 69 to 72 during the period.

Maruti Suzuki remained the largest petrol vehicle manufacturer with 5,93,466 units, followed by:

  • Hyundai: 1,93,301 units

  • Tata Motors: 1,69,507 units

  • Kia: 1,09,580 units

  • Toyota: 74,608 units

  • Mahindra: 57,608 units

Maruti Suzuki accounted for approximately 44% of all petrol vehicle sales, while Hyundai and Tata held shares of 14% and 13%, respectively.

CNG Records the Highest Absolute Volume Increase

CNG was one of the strongest-performing fuel categories during H1 2026.

Sales increased by 1,69,250 units, rising from 4,26,986 units to 5,96,236 units. This translated into year-on-year growth of 40%.

CNG’s overall market share increased from 20% to 23%, making it the second-largest fuel category behind petrol.

The number of CNG products, however, remained unchanged at 25. Growth was therefore largely supported by stronger sales from existing models, along with the introduction of newer products.

The models such as the Maruti Victoris, Dzire and Ertiga, Tata Nexon and Punch, and Hyundai Aura as key contributors to CNG growth.

Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the segment with 4,16,203 CNG vehicles, accounting for approximately 70% of the category.

Tata Motors ranked second with 1,00,855 units, followed by:

  • Hyundai: 55,024 units

  • Toyota: 24,154 units

CNG also formed a significant part of Maruti Suzuki’s internal sales mix, contributing 41% of the company’s H1 volumes.

Electric Vehicle Sales Surge 65%

Battery-electric passenger vehicle sales increased from 84,357 units in H1 2025 to 1,39,065 units in H1 2026. The category added 54,708 units and registered the highest percentage growth among all fuel types at 65%.

BEV market share increased from 4% to 5%, while the number of electric passenger vehicle products expanded from 17 to 21. The growth was supported by new electric vehicles introduced during 2025 and 2026, including models such as the Mahindra XEV 9s, Maruti eVitara and Tata Harrier EV. The data also points towards a possible sales push by manufacturers to meet their CAFE 2025-26 targets.

Tata Motors led the electric passenger vehicle segment with 60,005 units, accounting for approximately 43% of all BEV sales.

Mahindra followed with 38,751 units, while MG Motor recorded 26,339 units.

Other manufacturers included:

  • Maruti Suzuki: 8,572 units

  • Kia: 2,471 units

  • Hyundai: 2,222 units

  • Toyota: 504 units

  • Citroen: 201 units

MG had the highest dependence on electric vehicles among major manufacturers, with BEVs contributing approximately 77% of its H1 sales. Tata’s internal fuel mix was comparatively diversified, with electric vehicles contributing 16% of its total passenger vehicle volumes. Mahindra’s BEV share stood at 11%.

Diesel Sales Grow Despite Shrinking Product Availability

Diesel vehicle sales increased by 15%, from 3,95,605 units in H1 2025 to 4,56,076 units in H1 2026.

However, diesel’s market share remained broadly unchanged at 18%. On an unrounded basis, the category registered a marginal share decline of around 0.5 percentage points.

Interestingly, the number of diesel products declined from 29 to 27. This means that diesel volume growth came despite reduced product availability.

The increase to new and updated SUVs, including the Tata Sierra, new-generation Kia Seltos and Mahindra XUV 7XO facelift, along with stronger sales of existing diesel SUVs.

Mahindra was the undisputed diesel market leader with 2,62,186 units, accounting for approximately 57% of all diesel passenger vehicle sales.

Other major contributors were:

  • Hyundai: 55,405 units

  • Kia: 51,698 units

  • Tata Motors: 48,542 units

  • Toyota: 35,956 units

Diesel vehicles represented 73% of Mahindra’s overall passenger vehicle sales. Jeep’s relatively small H1 volume was entirely diesel-powered.

Strong-Hybrid Sales Remain Flat

Strong-hybrid vehicle sales remained almost unchanged during the first half of 2026.

Volumes increased by just 38 units, from 57,847 units to 57,885 units. Consequently, the category recorded virtually zero growth.

Its market share declined from approximately 3% to 2%, even though the number of strong-hybrid products increased from seven to eight. Toyota remained the dominant strong-hybrid manufacturer with 48,491 units, accounting for approximately 84% of category sales.

Maruti Suzuki followed with 8,735 units, while Honda recorded 659 units. Strong hybrids accounted for 26% of Toyota’s passenger vehicle sales but only around 1% of Maruti Suzuki’s volumes. The absence of major new product activity appears to have limited the category’s growth during the period.

Maruti Suzuki Retains 40% Market Share

Maruti Suzuki remained the largest passenger vehicle manufacturer in H1 2026 with sales of 10,26,976 units, averaging approximately 1,71,163 units per month.

The company accounted for 40% of the market.

Tata Motors ranked second with 3,78,909 units and a 15% share, narrowly ahead of Mahindra, which recorded 3,58,545 units and a 14% share.

India passenger vehicle market H1 2026 fuel, brand and body-style sales analysis infographic
India’s passenger vehicle sales increased 18.4% in H1 2026, led by strong growth in CNG and battery-electric vehicles.

Key Takeaways

The Indian passenger vehicle market entered 2026 with broad-based growth, but the gains were not evenly distributed across powertrains.

Petrol retained its leadership but lost market share as CNG and electric vehicles expanded faster. CNG emerged as the biggest contributor to incremental volumes, while BEVs registered the highest percentage growth.

Diesel remained resilient because of India’s continuing preference for SUVs, particularly among Mahindra, Tata, Hyundai, Kia and Toyota customers. Strong-hybrid volumes, however, stagnated despite an increase in the number of available products.

The H1 2026 data indicates that India is not moving towards a single replacement for petrol. Instead, the market is becoming increasingly multi-fuel, with CNG, diesel, electric and hybrid technologies finding distinct use cases across brands and body styles.
