5 min read

Jaguar has officially unveiled the Type 01, the production-ready four-door electric GT that marks the beginning of an entirely new chapter for the British luxury brand.

Revealed in New York, the Type 01 is the first production Jaguar based on the company’s dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA) and becomes the most powerful, aerodynamic and technologically advanced road car in Jaguar’s history. Jaguar says the new model is not intended as a direct replacement for any outgoing product; instead, it establishes the design, technology and luxury direction for the brand’s next generation.

1,030 HP Makes It the Most Powerful Jaguar Yet

The Type 01 uses a three-motor electric powertrain, with two motors mounted at the rear and one at the front.

Together, they produce 1,030 hp and 1,365 Nm, making the Type 01 the most powerful production Jaguar ever built. Despite weighing around 2.7 tonnes, Jaguar’s new GT can accelerate from 0–100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. It can also accelerate from 100 km/h to 180 km/h in around 4 seconds, underlining Jaguar’s emphasis on sustained performance rather than only headline launch acceleration.

The Type 01 also features torque vectoring, multiple drive modes, air suspension and twin-valve active dampers.

Rear-wheel steering helps reduce its turning circle to approximately 11.5 metres, despite the GT’s substantial dimensions.

120 kWh Battery and Up to 720 km WLTP Range

The Type 01 is powered by a 120 kWh NMC battery, of which approximately 118 kWh is usable.

Jaguar claims a WLTP driving range of up to 720 km, while the official US target is around 400 miles on the EPA cycle.

The car uses an 850-volt electrical architecture, allowing high-speed DC charging at up to 350 kW.

According to Jaguar, around 321 km of driving range can be added in just 13 minutes, while a 10–80% charge is expected to take roughly 22 minutes under ideal conditions.

Interestingly, Jaguar has also provided charging ports on both sides of the car, making it easier to connect to chargers irrespective of the parking orientation.

Split Battery Layout Enables Radical Proportions

One of the most unusual engineering decisions in the Type 01 is its battery layout.

Instead of using a conventional single skateboard-style battery pack, Jaguar has divided the battery into five separate modules positioned at different locations along the car.

The arrangement helped engineers retain the Type 00 concept’s low roofline while creating sufficient foot space for rear passengers.

This layout also helped Jaguar achieve the Type 01’s dramatic proportions, with a very long bonnet, low cabin and extended wheelbase.

Type 00 Concept Influence Clearly Visible

The production Type 01 stays remarkably close to the Type 00 concept that previewed Jaguar’s controversial new design direction.

Its front end features Jaguar’s new horizontal “strikethrough” graphic, complemented by ultra-slim headlights and four distinctive daytime-running-light elements.

The car also gets active cooling shutters lower in the front bumper.

The Type 01 sits on enormous 23-inch wheels, while its approximately 3.2-metre wheelbase and 1,400 mm overall height give it an unusually low and long stance.

Jaguar’s Most Aerodynamic Road Car

Despite its near-upright front treatment and huge dimensions, Jaguar claims the Type 01 has a drag coefficient of just 0.23, making it the most aerodynamic production Jaguar to date.

Active aerodynamic elements, flush surfaces and a deployable rear spoiler help improve both efficiency and high-speed stability.

The rear spoiler can operate in three positions depending on vehicle speed and driving requirements.

No Conventional Rear Windscreen

One of the Type 01’s most controversial design choices is the complete absence of a traditional rear windscreen.

Instead, the car uses a rear-facing camera feeding a digital rear-view mirror.

Jaguar says a normal rear window would have offered limited visibility because of the low roof and steeply sloping rear bodywork, so designers opted for a solid rear panel instead.

The rear also carries the strikethrough design theme, with the tail-lamps integrated within the horizontal graphic.

Four-Seat Interior With Dramatic Central Spine

The Type 01 is a four-door, four-seat GT, and its cabin moves Jaguar decisively away from traditional luxury-car interior design.

A prominent central spine runs through the entire cabin, visually separating the four occupants into individual spaces.

Jaguar had previously previewed the interior and described the layout as an evolution of its “Exuberant Modernism” design philosophy.

The low driving position and enveloping cockpit are designed to create a more sporting GT experience.

24-Inch Display and Minimal Physical Controls

The dashboard is dominated by a large 24-inch display combining instrumentation and infotainment.

Driver information is positioned towards the right side, while passenger-accessible functions occupy the left. A rear touchscreen controller is integrated into the centre spine, while the front seats offer heating, ventilation and massage functions.

Jaguar has deliberately kept physical controls to a minimum.

Practicality Takes a Back Seat to Design

The Type 01’s dramatic styling also brings some compromises.

The low roofline and small rear windows create a relatively enclosed rear-seat environment, while ingress and egress are less conventional than in a typical luxury sedan.

Boot space stands at approximately 450 litres, with additional storage available beneath the luggage floor.

This reflects Jaguar’s positioning of the Type 01 as a design-led luxury GT rather than a conventional executive limousine.

Jaguar Electric Architecture Is the Foundation

The Type 01 is the first model based on the new Jaguar Electric Architecture, a platform developed specifically for Jaguar’s future EV range.

Jaguar says the architecture allowed engineers to prioritise proportion and styling rather than simply adapting an existing EV platform.

Future Jaguar models are expected to use the same underlying architecture as the brand rebuilds its entire portfolio around electric vehicles.

Why It Is Called Type 01

Jaguar says the name itself explains the significance of the car.

“Type” references famous Jaguar products from the past.

“0” represents zero tailpipe emissions.

“1” signifies that this is the first vehicle in Jaguar’s new generation.

Jaguar Moves Further Upmarket

The Type 01 also represents a major repositioning for Jaguar.

Rather than competing directly with high-volume premium manufacturers, Jaguar is aiming for a significantly more exclusive position between conventional luxury brands and ultra-luxury marques.

International pricing is expected to start at around £120,000, placing the Type 01 well above Jaguar’s previous mainstream luxury offerings.

Its key global rivals are likely to include models such as the Porsche Taycan, Audi e-tron GT and upcoming ultra-performance electric GTs.

Jaguar Type 01 India Launch

Jaguar has not yet announced official India pricing or a confirmed Indian launch date.

Globally, orders will open in early 2027, with first customer deliveries expected during the second half of 2027.

Given JLR’s established presence in India, the Type 01 will naturally be relevant to the Indian luxury-EV market, but any India-specific launch schedule, specification or pricing should be treated as unconfirmed until officially announced.

Auto Punditz Take

The Type 01 is arguably the most consequential Jaguar in decades.

Rather than gradually electrifying its existing range, Jaguar has effectively started again—with a new platform, dramatically different design language, a much higher luxury positioning and a 1,030 hp electric flagship to introduce it.

The technical numbers are impressive: 1,030 hp, 1,365 Nm, up to 720 km WLTP range and 350 kW charging. But the Type 01 will ultimately be judged less by those figures and more by whether buyers accept Jaguar’s radical transformation.

Its concept-car proportions, unconventional cabin and polarising exterior guarantee attention. The much bigger question is whether that attention can translate into sustainable demand for a Jaguar positioned substantially above the brand’s traditional territory.

For Jaguar, the Type 01 is not merely a new model.

It is the product on which the brand’s entire reinvention now rests.
