Appointment Comes at a Crucial Stage for JSW Motors

The appointment is significant as JSW Motors moves closer to introducing its new-energy passenger vehicles in India. The company is simultaneously scaling up its greenfield vehicle manufacturing facility at Bidkin in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra.

As the project progresses, JSW Motors will need to coordinate closely with various government departments and regulatory institutions on matters related to manufacturing, industrial development, vehicle regulations, electric-mobility policies and investment facilitation.

Doval’s experience in covering automobiles, technology, trade, industrial policy and the broader corporate economy is expected to support the company’s engagement with policymakers and industry stakeholders during this expansion phase.

Nearly Three Decades of Journalism Experience

Pankaj Doval joins JSW Motors after a journalism career spanning nearly three decades. He most recently served as National Editor at The Times of India.

During his long tenure with the Times Group, Doval held several senior editorial positions, including Senior Assistant Editor in the Corporate and Economy Bureau and Senior Editor.

He led national coverage across sectors such as automobiles, technology, telecom, information technology, trade and industrial policy. His reporting frequently focused on the relationship between corporate strategy, government regulations and public policy.

Earlier in his career, Doval worked with The Financial Express, Press Trust of India and United News of India.

His transition from business journalism to corporate affairs gives JSW Motors access to a professional with extensive understanding of India’s regulatory institutions, government processes and industrial-policy environment.

Educational Background

Doval is a graduate of Delhi University and holds a Master’s degree in Political Science and Mass Communications. He also has a postgraduate certificate in international journalism from Seoul National University.

His academic background, combined with his professional experience covering businesses, regulators and policymakers, positions him to manage the increasingly complex policy and stakeholder requirements of a new automotive company.

JSW Motors Expanding Its New-Energy Vehicle Ambitions

JSW Motors was established in 2024 as the JSW Group’s dedicated new-energy passenger vehicle business. The company plans to design and manufacture next-generation passenger vehicles tailored for Indian consumers.

Its upcoming manufacturing facility in Maharashtra is expected to form the foundation of the company’s electric-vehicle manufacturing and engineering capabilities.

JSW Motors has said that its strategy will focus on sustainable mobility, advanced technology, engineering and intelligent transportation solutions.

The company’s entry could further intensify competition in India’s fast-growing electric and new-energy passenger vehicle market, which is already witnessing significant investments from established domestic manufacturers and global automotive brands.

Why the Appointment Matters

Automotive companies are becoming increasingly dependent on effective policy engagement as India introduces new regulations covering electric vehicles, battery manufacturing, charging infrastructure, safety standards, localisation and emissions.

For a new automotive manufacturer, coordination with government agencies and industry organisations can play an important role in areas such as manufacturing approvals, incentives, regulatory compliance and product homologation.

By appointing an experienced business journalist with extensive exposure to the automobile and policy sectors, JSW Motors appears to be strengthening its institutional engagement capabilities before beginning vehicle launches and large-scale manufacturing operations.

Auto Punditz Take

Pankaj Doval’s appointment indicates that JSW Motors is building its leadership and institutional framework ahead of its anticipated entry into the passenger vehicle market.

The company will need to navigate a complex environment involving electric-mobility regulations, localisation requirements, investment policies and competition from established manufacturers.

Doval’s extensive experience covering India’s automotive industry, government policy and corporate economy could help JSW Motors establish stronger relationships with policymakers, regulators and industry bodies as its manufacturing and product plans advance.

With its Maharashtra production facility under development and new-energy vehicle launches approaching, JSW Motors is gradually assembling the leadership structure required to support its long-term automotive ambitions.
