Kia Sorento Diesel 8-DCT Reaches Dealers Ahead of September 4 Launch – 7-Seater Variant Revealed

The upcoming Kia Sorento has started reaching dealer yards in India, providing the clearest indication yet that Kia is preparing for customer deliveries soon after its official launch on September 4, 2026.

More importantly, the latest undisguised example reveals a key variant that should be particularly relevant for Indian SUV buyers – a seven-seat Sorento powered by the 2.2-litre diesel engine and 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The latest sighting also suggests that Kia could offer the Sorento in more than one seating and equipment configuration, allowing it to address a broader section of the premium three-row SUV market.

Kia Sorento Diesel 8-DCT Confirmed

A prominent DCT badge on the rear of the dealer-yard vehicle points to Kia's 2.2-litre turbo-diesel powertrain.

The India-spec diesel is expected to produce approximately:

Specification

Kia Sorento Diesel

Engine

2.2-litre turbo-diesel

Displacement

2,151cc

Maximum Power

Approx. 201 hp / 202 PS

Maximum Torque

440 Nm

Transmission

8-speed DCT

Seating

7 seats on spotted version

The engine is paired with an 8-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, giving the Sorento a rather unusual drivetrain proposition in this segment, where conventional torque-converter automatics remain more common.

The same basic diesel engine architecture is also familiar from Kia's larger premium products.

Sorento Hybrid Will Be The Other Big Attraction

Kia isn't relying solely on diesel.

The company has already confirmed that the Sorento will be offered in India with both diesel and strong-hybrid powertrains, with the latter marking Kia India's entry into the strong-hybrid segment.

The hybrid is based around a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine combined with an electric motor.

Even more significantly, Kia has confirmed all-wheel drive for the hybrid Sorento, giving the SUV an interesting differentiation against several monocoque three-row rivals.

That means buyers are likely to have two distinctly different Sorento propositions:

Diesel 8-DCT: aimed at buyers seeking torque, highway capability and a familiar premium-SUV powertrain.

Petrol Strong Hybrid AWD: aimed at buyers looking for better urban efficiency, electrification and additional traction capability.

Latest Sorento Is A Proper 7-Seater

While previously spotted versions of the Sorento featured second-row captain seats, the latest dealer-yard example uses a conventional second-row bench.

The arrangement makes it a true 2+3+2 seven-seat configuration.

The second-row bench features a 60:40 split, while the seats can slide and recline to balance legroom between second- and third-row occupants.

This is important for India because a seven-seat variant could appeal more strongly to family buyers than an exclusively six-seat configuration.

It also indicates Kia could eventually offer both:

  • 6-seat Sorento with captain chairs

  • 7-seat Sorento with second-row bench

depending on variant.

Third Row Doesn't Appear To Be An Afterthought

Three-row SUVs frequently compromise heavily on amenities for the last row, but the Sorento appears comparatively well equipped.

The dealer-yard vehicle shows dedicated third-row provisions including:

  • AC vents

  • Cupholders

  • USB Type-C charging

  • 12V power outlet

The third-row seats can also be folded from the luggage area.

Additionally, buttons positioned inside the boot can release/fold the second-row seats, making conversion between passenger- and luggage-carrying configurations considerably easier.

A powered tailgate is also visible.

Premium Cabin With Twin-Screen Dashboard

The Sorento continues Kia's increasingly technology-heavy cabin approach.

A large curved display panel dominates the dashboard and integrates the digital driver's display and infotainment system.

Visible equipment on the latest vehicle includes:

  • Digital instrument cluster

  • Large touchscreen infotainment system

  • Bose premium audio

  • Powered front seats

  • Ventilated front seats

  • Leather upholstery

  • Wireless smartphone charging

  • Multiple USB Type-C ports

  • 360-degree camera

  • Electronic parking brake

  • Auto Hold

  • Drive modes

  • Rotary transmission selector

The latest vehicle has a lighter cabin theme, whereas an earlier Sorento shown by Kia had a brown interior.

This could indicate that interior colour combinations may vary according to trim.

19-Inch Wheels Give Sorento Considerable Road Presence

The dealer-yard vehicle wears what appear to be 19-inch alloy wheels.

At approximately:

4,815mm long1,900mm wide1,700mm tall2,815mm wheelbase

the Sorento occupies the space between mainstream midsize SUVs and larger traditional ladder-frame premium SUVs.

Its upright front, large grille, vertically positioned headlamps, pronounced roof rails and nearly squared-off rear give it considerably more presence than the dimensions alone might suggest.

Kia Has Already Started Sorento Production In India

An important difference between the Sorento and some imported premium SUVs is Kia's India manufacturing strategy.

Kia has already commenced production of the India-spec Sorento at its Anantapur facility in Andhra Pradesh.

With vehicles now appearing at dealer yards, Kia appears to be building inventory before the September 4 price announcement.

This should potentially allow deliveries to commence relatively quickly after launch.

Sorento Will Become Kia India's Flagship ICE SUV

The Sorento will sit above the Seltos and become Kia India's flagship internal-combustion SUV.

It will also give Kia a presence in a segment where buyers currently evaluate products spanning very different architectures and philosophies.

Potential rivals include:

  • Toyota Fortuner

  • Skoda Kodiaq

  • Volkswagen Tayron

  • Jeep Meridian

  • MG's upcoming premium three-row SUV offerings

However, the Sorento's strongest differentiation could come from its combination of diesel-DCT and strong-hybrid AWD powertrains.

While the Fortuner relies heavily on its rugged ladder-frame credentials, Sorento is fundamentally positioned as a more road-oriented, technology-rich monocoque family SUV.

Kia Sorento Expected Price

Official prices will only be announced on September 4.

Current market expectations point towards pricing beginning around the ₹40 lakh ex-showroom region, although Kia's final localisation level and variant strategy will determine how aggressively it can position the SUV.

A competitively priced diesel entry variant could be particularly important.

If Kia manages to keep the Sorento close enough to premium variants of SUVs such as the Fortuner, Kodiaq and Tayron, the combination of equipment, three-row practicality and multiple powertrain choices could make the Sorento one of Kia's most interesting launches in India yet.

Auto Punditz Take

The latest dealer-yard sighting reveals an important part of Kia's Sorento strategy.

Rather than bringing the SUV to India purely as a highly equipped six-seat flagship, Kia appears to be preparing multiple configurations, including a more family-oriented seven-seat diesel version.

The 2.2-litre diesel with an 8-speed DCT should appeal to traditional premium-SUV buyers, while the 1.6-litre strong-hybrid AWD gives Kia a distinctly more technology-led alternative.

Local production is equally significant.

Kia has extensive manufacturing infrastructure in India, and leveraging it for the Sorento could allow the company to price the SUV far more competitively than a fully imported product.

The big unknown now is price.

Around ₹40 lakh ex-showroom would place the Sorento directly in the busiest part of India's premium three-row SUV segment. Any significant localisation-led price advantage could make the equation particularly interesting.

With production underway and diesel Sorento units already reaching dealer yards, September 4 could mark one of Kia India's most consequential premium launches in recent years.
