Kia Sorento India Launch on September 4: AWD and Live Gen AI Confirmed for New 7-Seater SUV

Kia India is preparing to make a significant move in the premium SUV segment with the launch of the Kia Sorento on September 4, 2026. Ahead of its market introduction, the company has confirmed two important technologies for the India-spec three-row SUV – All-Wheel Drive (AWD) and its new Live Gen AI in-car assistant.

The Sorento will sit above the Seltos in Kia India's SUV portfolio and effectively become the company's flagship internal-combustion-engined SUV in the country. More importantly, it will mark Kia's entry into a part of the market currently occupied by premium three-row SUVs such as the Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tayron, Jeep Meridian and Toyota Fortuner.

Kia Sorento AWD Confirmed for India

One of the biggest confirmations ahead of the launch is the availability of all-wheel drive. The Sorento will become the first ICE-powered Kia offered in India with AWD, adding an important capability to what has primarily been a front-wheel-drive Kia SUV portfolio in the country.

Globally, the Sorento is already available with AWD depending on market and powertrain. Kia's international specifications also show AWD availability on the Sorento Hybrid, demonstrating that the drivetrain is already integrated with the electrified version of the SUV.

For India, AWD could give the Sorento a stronger premium positioning while improving traction on wet roads, loose surfaces and more challenging terrain. It also differentiates the upcoming SUV from models that focus primarily on urban three-row family transportation.

Live Gen AI Brings Conversational Assistance

Another major technology confirmed for the India-spec Sorento is Live Gen AI.

Unlike conventional voice-command systems where occupants have to use relatively fixed commands, the generative-AI-based system is designed to offer a more conversational interface.

The assistant is expected to understand natural-language queries, control supported vehicle functions and provide information through the connected infotainment system. Kia has officially been increasing its focus on software and AI technologies globally as part of its future vehicle strategy. The Sorento could therefore become one of Kia India's most technology-intensive vehicles outside its premium EV portfolio.

Strong-Hybrid Powertrain Expected

A 1.6-litre turbo-petrol strong-hybrid powertrain is widely expected to headline the Sorento range in India. Internationally, Kia offers the Sorento with diesel, hybrid and plug-in-hybrid powertrains depending on the market. Kia UK's current Sorento portfolio, for example, includes a 1.6-litre T-GDi hybrid paired with a 6-speed automatic as well as a 2.2-litre diesel with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The US-spec 2026 Sorento Hybrid produces 227 hp and is available with AWD, while European-market specifications vary slightly in output. Recent Indian reports suggest Kia could offer both a strong-hybrid and diesel option, but the company has yet to disclose the final India-spec engine line-up and output figures.

The hybrid is particularly significant because the Sorento is expected to become Kia's first strong-hybrid offering in India. That would put the manufacturer into a rapidly developing electrified premium-SUV market without requiring customers to depend on charging infrastructure.

Premium Three-Row Cabin

The Sorento is a considerably larger SUV than the Seltos and has been designed as a genuine three-row vehicle. The global model measures more than 4.8 metres in length and has a wheelbase of around 2.8 metres, giving Kia significantly more room to package the second and third rows.

Both six-seat and seven-seat layouts are expected for India, potentially giving customers the option of captain seats in the second row or a conventional bench arrangement. Globally, Kia positions the Sorento specifically as a seven-seat SUV with an emphasis on passenger space and versatility.

Expected Features

The Sorento is expected to arrive loaded with equipment appropriate for its premium positioning.

Likely highlights include:

  • Dual 12.3-inch digital displays

  • Panoramic sunroof

  • Powered and ventilated front seats

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

  • Wireless smartphone charging

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

  • Electronic parking brake

  • 360-degree camera

  • Head-up display on higher variants

  • Multiple airbags

  • Level 2 ADAS

  • Connected-car technology

  • Live Gen AI voice assistant

The global Sorento already offers several advanced driver-assistance and parking technologies, including collision-avoidance systems and highway assistance features.

The exact India-spec equipment distribution will become clear closer to launch.

Where Will the Kia Sorento Sit?

The Sorento fills an important gap in Kia's Indian line-up.

At present, there is a large price and positioning jump between mainstream Kia products such as the Seltos and the considerably more expensive EV9. The Sorento could slot directly into that space as a premium three-row SUV offering a combination of hybrid efficiency, AWD capability and sophisticated cabin technology.

Its key competitors are likely to include:

Skoda Kodiaq – premium monocoque three-row SUV with AWD

Volkswagen Tayron – premium three-row SUV positioned alongside the Kodiaq

Toyota Fortuner – dominant body-on-frame premium SUV

Jeep Meridian – three-row SUV with diesel and 4x4 availability

Rather than trying to replicate the rugged body-on-frame character of the Fortuner, the Sorento is likely to focus more strongly on comfort, technology, refinement and electrification.

Kia Sorento Expected Price

Pricing will ultimately decide how aggressively Kia can compete.

Current market estimates place the Sorento somewhere around the ₹30 lakh to ₹40 lakh ex-showroom bracket, although Kia has not announced an official price range.

Given the possibility of a strong-hybrid powertrain, AWD, Level 2 ADAS and premium cabin equipment, the higher end of that spectrum would not be surprising. Much will also depend on how extensively Kia localises the SUV.

Why the Sorento Matters for Kia India

The Sorento isn't simply another SUV addition for Kia.

It potentially introduces three major technologies to the company's Indian ICE portfolio at the same time:

Strong hybrid + AWD + Generative AI.

That combination could allow Kia to appeal to customers who want something more premium and spacious than a Seltos but are not ready to move to a full-size luxury EV such as the EV9. It also expands Kia India's presence beyond the high-volume compact and midsize SUV categories into the premium ₹35 lakh-plus market.

Auto Punditz Take

The Sorento could be one of Kia India's most strategically important launches in recent years. Kia has already established itself strongly in mainstream SUVs, but the premium three-row category operates very differently. Buyers here expect not just equipment but also refinement, road presence, strong performance and increasingly some form of electrification.

The AWD confirmation is particularly important because it gives the Sorento additional credibility against established premium SUVs. The addition of Live Gen AI also gives Kia a technology-led differentiator that competitors currently do not emphasise to the same extent.

However, the biggest factor will be pricing. If Kia manages meaningful localisation and positions the Sorento closer to the ₹30-40 lakh range, the combination of a strong-hybrid drivetrain, three-row seating and AWD could make it one of the most compelling alternatives to traditional diesel premium SUVs. All eyes will therefore be on September 4, 2026, when Kia reveals the final India-spec powertrains, variants, equipment and prices.
