Kia Sorento India Launch Set for September 4; To Become Brand’s First Strong-Hybrid SUV

Kia is preparing to strengthen its presence in India’s premium SUV market with the introduction of the Sorento, with the three-row SUV now set to launch on September 4, 2026.

The Sorento will sit above the Seltos in Kia India’s SUV portfolio and, more importantly, is expected to mark the company’s entry into the strong-hybrid segment in India. A diesel powertrain is also expected to be offered, giving Kia an interesting two-pronged strategy in the premium three-row SUV space.

The upcoming SUV will compete in a segment populated by models such as the Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq and Jeep Meridian, along with upcoming premium SUVs including the Volkswagen Tayron and MG Majestor.

Kia Sorento is set for an India launch on September 4, with strong-hybrid and diesel powertrains expected.

Kia’s First Strong Hybrid for India

The biggest talking point surrounding the Sorento is its electrified powertrain.

Kia has already officially identified the Sorento HEV as one of the electrified models planned for India as part of its broader strategy through 2030. The company aims to

expand its Indian portfolio to 10 models and offer eight electrified vehicles, including the Sorento HEV and Carnival HEV.

For the Sorento, a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor is expected to form the strong-hybrid powertrain.

Reports suggest the India-spec system could produce approximately 241 PS and 380 Nm, with power transmitted through a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Final India-spec powertrain figures, variants and drivetrain configurations should, however, be confirmed by Kia closer to launch.

The Sorento is also expected to receive a 2.2-litre diesel engine. This could give Kia an important advantage as diesel remains relevant among buyers of large premium SUVs, particularly customers with high highway usage.

Sorento Could Bridge the Gap Between Seltos and Carnival

The Sorento's arrival will also help Kia address a major gap in its current Indian portfolio.

While the Seltos competes in the mainstream midsize SUV segment, Kia's premium presence is currently represented largely by products such as the Carnival and EV9.

At around 4.8 metres long, the Sorento is a substantially larger SUV than the Seltos and is designed as a genuine three-row family vehicle.

The premium positioning is expected to be reflected in the cabin as well.

The Sorento's international specification and India test vehicles point towards equipment such as a large curved display incorporating the digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment system, premium upholstery, a panoramic sunroof and a comprehensive suite of connected-car technologies.

Expected equipment includes ventilated seats, wireless smartphone charging, Bose premium audio, 360-degree camera, electronic parking brake with auto hold and multiple drive/terrain modes.

A comprehensive ADAS package is also expected to feature on higher variants.

Bold, Premium SUV Styling

The Sorento adopts Kia's latest SUV design language and has a noticeably more upright and premium appearance than the Seltos. The front is characterised by vertically arranged LED headlamps, distinctive LED daytime running lights and a large grille.

Strong wheel arches and large alloy wheels add visual mass when viewed from the side, while the relatively long wheelbase reinforces its three-row proportions.

At the rear, vertically oriented LED tail lamps, a roof-mounted spoiler and sculpted bumper give the Sorento a distinctive appearance.

Overall, the Sorento appears designed to offer the road presence expected from a ₹40 lakh-plus SUV without following the traditional body-on-frame SUV formula.

Local Assembly Could Be Crucial

The Sorento is expected to reach India through the CKD (Completely Knocked Down) route, with local assembly helping Kia keep its pricing more competitive than a fully imported model.

An aggressive localisation and assembly strategy could prove crucial because the Sorento will enter an increasingly competitive part of the Indian premium car market.

Prices are expected to start around the ₹40 lakh mark (ex-showroom), although Kia has not announced official pricing.

Depending on the number of variants and drivetrain options offered, higher-spec Sorento variants could move significantly above that level.

A Different Challenger to the Fortuner?

The Sorento will not be a direct mechanical equivalent to the Toyota Fortuner.

Instead, Kia appears to be targeting buyers who want the size and three-row practicality of a premium SUV but place greater importance on cabin refinement, technology, comfort and fuel efficiency.

The strong-hybrid powertrain could become one of the Sorento's biggest differentiators.

Hybrid technology has gained increasing relevance in India's premium vehicle market as manufacturers look for an intermediate path between conventional internal-combustion vehicles and full EVs.

At the same time, retaining a diesel option could allow Kia to appeal to traditional large-SUV customers.

Kia's India Strategy Is Becoming More Electrified

At its 2026 CEO Investor Day, Kia announced plans to grow annual Indian sales to around 4.10 lakh vehicles by 2030, targeting approximately 7.6% market share.

The company intends to expand its India portfolio to 10 models while offering eight electrified vehicles (xEVs).

Importantly, Kia specifically named the Sorento HEV among the models forming this strategy.

That makes the Sorento significant beyond its expected volumes. It will effectively test customer acceptance of Kia's strong-hybrid technology in India before the company expands electrification across more segments.
