BMW continued to dominate India’s luxury electric vehicle market in August with 274 registrations, accounting for an impressive 49.6% market share. However, the German luxury carmaker saw a significant contraction in volumes. Registrations declined 35.1% YoY from 422 units in August 2025 and fell 30.6% MoM from 395 units in July 2026.
Tesla recorded 116 registrations during August 2026, unchanged from July. The American EV manufacturer finished August in second place with a 21% share, narrowly edging out Mercedes-Benz. More importantly, Tesla’s volumes remained stable even as the overall luxury EV market fell nearly 26% sequentially, resulting in a relatively stronger market position during the month.
Mercedes-Benz registered 114 electric cars in August 2026, just two units behind Tesla. Its volumes grew modestly by 3.6% YoY, compared with 110 registrations in August 2025. However, registrations fell 35.2% month-on-month, from 176 units in July. Mercedes-Benz increased its market share from 19.3% to 20.7% YoY, gaining approximately 1.3 percentage points.
Volvo recorded 33 registrations, translating into a 6% market share. Volvo’s market share rose from 4.2% to 6%, indicating that it gained ground despite the weaker overall market.
Porsche registered 15 electric cars in August, up from only six units in July. That translated into a substantial 150% MoM increase, the strongest sequential growth among luxury EV manufacturers in the dataset. Porsche's registrations were also up 50% YoY from 10 units in August 2025.

BMW led India’s luxury electric car market in August 2026 with 274 registrations and a 49.6% market share.
Auto Punditz Take
August 2026 marks an interesting transition for India’s luxury EV market. BMW remains comfortably ahead, but its sharp decline in both volumes and market share means the segment is becoming substantially less concentrated than it was a year ago. BMW’s share has dropped from more than 74% to below 50%.
The biggest structural change is clearly Tesla. With 116 registrations and a 21% share, Tesla has quickly established itself alongside BMW and Mercedes-Benz as one of the three major players in the luxury electric vehicle space. Mercedes-Benz remains competitive, with registrations marginally higher than last year, while Volvo and Porsche are gradually expanding their shares from smaller bases.
