  • BMW continued to dominate India’s luxury electric-car registrations in September, recording 502 units. This represented growth of 36% over September 2025 and a substantial 73.1% increase over August 2026. BMW alone accounted for 51.5% of the luxury EV market during the month, meaning more than one in every two luxury electric cars registered in the tracked segment carried a BMW badge. Despite the strong volume increase, BMW’s share declined from 60.6% in September 2025 to 51.5% in September 2026, largely because of much faster growth from Tesla.

  • Tesla was the standout performer in September with 291 registrations, compared with 117 units in August. The American EV manufacturer consequently recorded 148.7% month-on-month growth. The year-on-year comparison was even stronger. Tesla registrations increased from 69 units in September 2025 to 291 units in September 2026, translating into growth of 321.7%. Tesla’s market share expanded sharply from 11.3% to 29.8%, a gain of 18.5 percentage points year-on-year.

  • BMW and Tesla together accounted for approximately 81% of luxury EV registrations in September 2026.

  • Mercedes-Benz registered 125 electric cars during September 2026, slightly below the 127 units recorded in August. Registrations declined 1.6% month-on-month and 8.8% year-on-year, compared with 137 units in September 2025. The decline becomes more significant when viewed against the strong expansion of the overall luxury EV segment. Mercedes-Benz’s market share fell from 22.5% in September 2025 to 12.8% in September 2026. The company nevertheless remained the third-largest luxury EV manufacturer by registrations during the month.

  • Volvo registered 45 electric cars in September, compared with 35 units during August and 26 units in September last year. This resulted in 28.6% month-on-month growth and an impressive 73.1% year-on-year increase. Its market share edged higher from 4.3% to 4.6%.

  • Porsche recorded 11 electric-car registrations during September. While this represented a 37.5% increase over the eight units registered in September 2025, registrations were down 26.7% from 15 units in August 2026. Porsche held approximately 1.1% of the segment during the month.

  • Jaguar recorded a single registration, while Audi and Lotus registered no vehicles in the Vahan dataset for September.

Top Three Brands Control More Than 94% of the Market

Another notable characteristic of the luxury EV segment remains its high concentration.

BMW, Tesla and Mercedes-Benz together recorded:

502 + 291 + 125 = 918 units

That represents approximately 94.2% of all luxury electric-car registrations during September 2026. BMW and Tesla alone contributed 793 units, highlighting how strongly the segment’s September performance was influenced by the two brands.

Luxury EV Market Sees Strong September Expansion

September 2026 was a particularly strong month for India’s luxury electric-car market.

Total registrations rising from 585 units in August to 975 units in September represents an increase of nearly 390 vehicles in just one month.

At the same time, registrations were 366 units higher than September 2025, indicating that the expansion was not solely a month-on-month phenomenon. BMW continued to lead the segment comfortably, but Tesla recorded the strongest growth and significantly increased its share of the market. Volvo also posted healthy growth, while Mercedes-Benz lost share amid the rapidly expanding overall segment.

With 975 registrations in September, India’s luxury EV market is moving closer to the 1,000-unit monthly registration milestone, highlighting the increasing presence of premium electric vehicles in the country.
