Mahindra Thar: The lonely offroader in India. Sales Analysis January to May 2021.

Mahindra Thar the Indian offroader started its a renewed journey in the Indian market early this year in January. The car was a runaway hit. It generated the right attention along with the right product offering, the car kick-started on full throttle. Even though customers were unhappy with the long waiting period, Mahindra did make best attempts to make the care available to the customers, despite the chip shortage across the industry.

While we do expect some action in this segment in days to come, it is still the single dominated car of the segment today. The month of May saw a volume of 1911 numbers which was down by about 44% against 3,406 volumes last year.

  • The month-wise volume trend averages around 2,644 numbers for the 5 months of launch. We have seen a peak of 3406 numbers in the month of April 2021 and the lowest was the previous month of May 2021.

Mahindra has its set of challenges introducing the Thar to a few new markets, due to ongoing issues with Jeep, we recently saw the challenges of introducing the Thar in Australia. So, the Indian Market of course plays a more important role for Mahindra. Also, with the Maruti Jimny and other cars being planned around the same segment, this segment will certainly catch up on some action.
