Mahindra Vision T Design Patented in India, Production SUV Expected in 2027

Mahindra appears to be moving closer to putting its rugged Vision T concept into production. The automaker has registered the SUV’s design in India, with the patent illustrations retaining most of the distinctive styling elements seen on the concept showcased in August 2025.

The Vision T was one of four futuristic SUV concepts presented by Mahindra at its Freedom_NU event, alongside the Vision S, Vision SXT and Vision X. All four models previewed the company’s next generation of SUVs under its “Global Vision 2027” programme.

Patent Design Remains Close to the Concept

The design patent indicates that Mahindra may carry much of the Vision T concept’s rugged appearance into the production model.

Up front, the SUV features a tall and upright fascia dominated by a vertically slatted grille. Square lighting elements, a flat clamshell-style bonnet and heavily sculpted bumper give the vehicle a tough, almost military-inspired appearance.

The patent drawings also reveal:

  • Prominent squared-off wheel arches

  • Chunky lower-body cladding

  • Upright windscreen and pillars

  • Flat roof with integrated utility elements

  • Exposed-looking door hinges

  • Tailgate-mounted spare wheel

  • Vertically oriented rear lighting elements

While details such as the oversized wheels, elaborate bumpers and concept-style lighting could be simplified for production, the overall silhouette appears largely unchanged. Recent reports based on the patent images similarly indicate that the SUV’s concept-like proportions have been retained.

Is Vision T the Next-Generation Mahindra Thar?

Mahindra has not officially confirmed the production identity of the Vision T. However, its design contains several references to the Thar family, including its boxy profile, upright body, squared wheel arches and rear-mounted spare wheel.

The concept is also viewed as an evolution of the earlier Thar.e electric SUV concept. This has led to speculation that the production Vision T could either become a next-generation Thar derivative or introduce a more premium off-road SUV positioned alongside the existing Thar and Thar Roxx.

However, it may not directly replace either model. Mahindra could use the Vision T to expand the Thar nameplate into a broader family of lifestyle SUVs, potentially offering different body styles and powertrain options.

Based on Mahindra’s New NU_IQ Platform

The production SUV is expected to be based on Mahindra’s new NU_IQ modular architecture.

Mahindra developed the platform to support multiple vehicle sizes, body styles and powertrain configurations. Reports surrounding the platform indicate that it can accommodate internal-combustion, hybrid and electric powertrains, giving Mahindra considerable flexibility while developing its upcoming SUVs.

This means the Vision T could potentially be introduced with more than one propulsion option over its lifecycle. Petrol and diesel versions could cater to traditional off-road SUV buyers, while an electric derivative may allow Mahindra to extend the Thar-inspired range into the growing lifestyle-EV segment.

Exact engine, battery, gearbox and four-wheel-drive specifications have not yet been disclosed.

Off-Road Capability Likely to Remain a Priority

Although the production specifications are still under wraps, the Vision T’s design clearly indicates an off-road-oriented positioning.

Its short overhangs, high ground clearance, upright proportions and large wheel arches should help provide favourable approach, departure and breakover angles. The production version is also expected to feature Mahindra’s established four-wheel-drive technology on selected variants.

However, Mahindra may combine this capability with a more sophisticated cabin and modern electronic features to make the Vision T suitable for everyday driving as well as recreational off-roading.

The interior could receive:

  • A large touchscreen infotainment system

  • Digital instrument cluster

  • Connected-car technology

  • Multiple terrain and drive modes

  • Advanced driver-assistance features

  • Premium audio and comfort equipment

  • Off-road information displays

These features remain expected rather than officially confirmed.

Production Expected From 2027

Mahindra had introduced the Vision concepts as part of its Global Vision 2027 roadmap, and the production-spec Vision T is widely expected to arrive during 2027 or possibly in early 2028.

The filing of the design patent does not guarantee an immediate launch, but it strengthens the possibility that the Vision T is progressing beyond the concept stage.

Mahindra may reveal additional information about the SUV’s production version, powertrain strategy and market positioning at one of its upcoming Independence Day product events.

What the Vision T Could Mean for Mahindra

The Vision T could become an important addition to Mahindra’s expanding portfolio of lifestyle SUVs.

The Thar and Thar Roxx have already demonstrated strong demand for rugged vehicles that combine road presence, off-road capability and everyday usability. A larger, technologically advanced SUV based on the NU_IQ platform could allow Mahindra to address an even wider customer base.

It could also help the company build a global lifestyle-vehicle family capable of competing with models such as the Force Gurkha, Jeep Wrangler and other rugged SUVs in international markets.

For now, Mahindra has only patented the design, and the final production model could undergo changes before launch. Nevertheless, the latest development suggests that the dramatic Vision T concept may reach showrooms with much of its distinctive character intact.
