Mahindra Vision X Design Patented in India – New Sub-4m SUV Takes Shape Ahead of 2027 Debut

Mahindra’s next wave of SUVs is beginning to move from concept stage towards production. The latest indication comes from the Mahindra Vision X, whose exterior design has now surfaced through a design patent filing in India.

The Vision X was one of four futuristic SUV concepts showcased by Mahindra in August 2025, alongside the Vision S, Vision T and Vision SXT. While those concepts previewed the company’s future design and technology direction, the latest patent suggests that the Vision X programme is progressing further towards a road-going model.

More importantly, the patented vehicle remains remarkably close to the original concept, suggesting Mahindra may retain much of its distinctive styling when the production SUV arrives.

Vision X Could Be Mahindra’s Sportier Compact SUV

The Vision X is expected to sit within the highly competitive sub-4-metre SUV segment.

However, it is unlikely to simply replace the existing Mahindra XUV 3XO. Instead, Mahindra could use the Vision X to create another product within the compact SUV space, potentially targeting customers looking for a more lifestyle-oriented and design-led crossover.

The segment already includes models such as the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Kia Syros.

A production Vision X would therefore give Mahindra an opportunity to broaden its presence in one of India's highest-volume passenger vehicle categories.

Patent Reveals Concept-Like Exterior

One of the most interesting aspects of the patent is how closely the vehicle resembles the Vision X concept.

At the front, the SUV features a prominent X-inspired fascia, complemented by slim lighting elements and a heavily sculpted bumper.

The squared wheel arches and substantial body cladding give the Vision X a muscular SUV stance despite its relatively compact dimensions.

The side profile appears considerably sportier than that of a conventional upright compact SUV. A tapering roofline, flush-style door handles and prominent rear haunches contribute to its crossover-like appearance.

At the rear, the Vision X features a wide lighting signature along with a roof-mounted spoiler and a sharply sculpted tailgate.

Some concept-car elements, such as camera-based exterior mirrors, are unlikely to reach mass production unchanged. Conventional ORVMs would be the more practical solution for the road-going model.

NU_IQ Platform Is Key to Vision X

Underneath the new design lies one of Mahindra's most important future technologies — the NU_IQ modular architecture.

Mahindra developed the platform to accommodate vehicles roughly between 4 metres and 4.3 metres in length while supporting different body styles and propulsion technologies.

The Vision X concept featured a wheelbase of approximately 2,665mm.

For comparison, the current XUV 3XO has a 2,600mm wheelbase. If Mahindra manages to retain the Vision X concept's wheelbase while keeping the production vehicle under four metres, interior space could become one of its major strengths.

A longer wheelbase can particularly benefit rear-seat legroom and cabin packaging — important considerations for Indian compact-SUV buyers.

Multiple Powertrain Options Possible

The flexibility of the NU_IQ architecture means the Vision X does not necessarily have to be restricted to a single propulsion technology.

The architecture has been designed to support internal-combustion, hybrid and electric powertrains.

This could allow Mahindra to develop multiple versions of the Vision X over its lifecycle.

An electric derivative is widely expected to form part of the programme, although Mahindra has yet to officially announce the production powertrain line-up or launch sequence.

Given Mahindra's rapidly expanding electric portfolio, an EV version of the Vision X could potentially play an important role in the company's next generation of smaller electric SUVs.

Cabin Could Introduce Mahindra's Next-Generation Interface

The Vision X concept also previewed a significantly different interior compared with Mahindra's current compact SUVs.

Its dashboard featured a wide curved display combining the digital instrument cluster and infotainment interface, along with a minimalist centre console and a new two-spoke steering wheel.

While the production cabin will inevitably be toned down, several technologies showcased on the concept could make their way into the road-going SUV.

Potential equipment could include a large touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, wireless smartphone connectivity, connected-car functions and advanced driver-assistance systems.

The final equipment list, however, remains unconfirmed.

Vision X vs XUV 3XO – How Could Mahindra Position Them?

Having two SUVs operating around the same size might initially appear unusual, but the strategy could allow Mahindra to target different types of customers.

The XUV 3XO can continue as the conventional compact SUV focused on performance, features and practicality.

The Vision X, meanwhile, could take a more premium crossover approach with distinctive styling, newer technology and potentially greater emphasis on electrification.

Such positioning would also allow Mahindra to expand its compact SUV footprint without depending on a single model.

A similar multi-product strategy is increasingly common as manufacturers attempt to address different customer profiles within India's rapidly expanding SUV market.

Expected Mahindra Vision X Launch

Mahindra has not announced an official launch date for the production Vision X.

Current indications point towards the new generation of NU_IQ-based Mahindra SUVs beginning to reach the market around 2027, making that a realistic timeframe for the Vision X as well.

The emergence of a design patent should not be interpreted as confirmation of an imminent launch. Manufacturers frequently protect designs well before production begins.

Nevertheless, when combined with Mahindra's broader NU_IQ product roadmap, the filing provides another indication that the Vision X is moving beyond being merely a design study.

The Vision X could become one of the more interesting products in Mahindra's upcoming SUV portfolio.

Instead of creating another conventional compact SUV, Mahindra appears to be developing a vehicle with noticeably stronger crossover characteristics while retaining the packaging advantages required for the Indian market.

The biggest differentiator could ultimately be the NU_IQ architecture. Its ability to support ICE, hybrid and electric propulsion gives Mahindra considerable flexibility in responding to how India's powertrain market evolves over the next several years.

If the production model retains the concept's long wheelbase and distinctive styling while remaining below four metres, the Vision X could also give Mahindra a compelling second offering alongside the XUV 3XO.

The latest design patent therefore matters for more than just styling. It provides another glimpse into how Mahindra intends to significantly broaden its SUV portfolio from 2027 onwards.
