Maruti Baleno emerged as the highest exported car from India in Q1 FY2022!

Maruti Suzuki has outpaced competition OEMs in terms of Exports too and became India's largest exporter of passenger vehicles in Apr'21-June'21 timeframe. Maruti was able to record over 378 percent YoY growth in Export volumes! It dethroned the likes of Hyundai and Ford to clinch the Top Spot. Also leading from the front was Maruti's Baleno and over 10.9k units were shipped in Q1 FY22!


Maruti Suzuki exports cars to over 125 countries around the world, including major countries like Australia, Indonesia, France, and Italy. Maruti Suzuki commenced the export of vehicles way back in FY1986-87. The first large consignment of 500 cars was shipped to Hungary in September 1987.


In the past 35 years, Maruti Suzuki has exported over 20 Lakh vehicles from India. While the first 10 Lakh units export volumes took 26 years; the other 10 Lakh units were achieved in just 9 years! With concerted efforts, the Company has been able to gain a sizeable share in markets like Chile, Indonesia, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. Models such as Alto, Baleno, Dzire, and Swift have emerged as popular choices in these markets.

OEMwise Passenger Vehicle Exports from India -

  • Maruti Suzuki stunned everyone with the sudden surge in export volumes and became India's largest exporter of passenger vehicles in the first three months of FY2021-22. Maruti's export Market Share shot up to 35.4% in Q1 FY22 over 21.6% Market Share in Q1 FY21!

  • Hyundai settled in the second spot in the ranking table and was able to export near to 30k units in Q1 FY2022. The South Korean major is now strongly followed by its sibling Kia and both the Korean majors together exported over 42.3k units from India in Apr'21-June'21 timeframe.

  • With GM exiting the Indian subcontinent completely; the exports dropped to 0 in Q1 FY2022 from 3,186 units in Q1 FY2021.

  • Volkswagen was India's fourth-largest PV Exporter and over 11.5k VW cars were exported in FY2022.

  • Ford slipped to the fifth position and the sudden drop in export volumes raises a lot of questions on the rumours behind Ford planning to exit the Indian market.

  • Nissan and Renault registered steady growth in Export volumes and was backed by Sunny, Kwid and Triber exports.

  • Honda had earlier said that it wants to make India an export base and is working strongly towards the same. The result is evident and Honda recorded over 18 times jump in export volumes in Q1 FY2022 vs Q1 FY2021.

Modelwise Export Sales from India -

  • Maruti Suzuki dominated the Top 10 list with 3 models - Baleno, Dzire and SPresso. While Baleno aced the exports volumes with 10,938 units; Dzire came close with exports of over 7.5k units. Maruti's strengthening base in Africa and Latin American countries is the key reason for the surge in export sales.

  • While Hyundai's Creta rules the Indian domestic market; it was also the highest exported SUV from India! Creta was Hyundai's highest exported model too.

  • Ford's Ecosport is still recording impressive export numbers and ranked third in the list.

  • Following Creta's footsteps, Seltos has gained traction in exports too. Also, note that Kia has two models in the Top 10 (Seltos & Sonet).

  • Hyundai has also initiated the exports of Alcazar and the first unit was shipped in June 2021. Alcazar also became the 10 millionth Hyundai car to be exported from India!

  • Maruti has been steadily exporting Made in India Jimny and over 3.4k units have been shipped in Q1 FY2022. The Jimny model being exported to international markets is identical to the one made in Suzuki’s Kosai plant in Japan, both mechanically and in terms of size. The Jimny is exported to Peru, Columbia, African markets, and countries in the Middle East.
