The launch of the MG Hector Tomahawk EV has made India's premium mass-market electric SUV segment considerably more competitive.
Priced from ₹19.49 lakh ex-showroom, the new electric SUV enters a space currently occupied by two distinctly different types of products. The Tata Harrier EV and Mahindra XEV 9e cater primarily to five-seat premium-SUV buyers, while the Mahindra XEV 9S provides a more direct alternative to the seven-seat version of the Tomahawk.
MG has therefore attempted to bridge both segments with a single model.
The Hector Tomahawk EV is available in five-seat as well as seven-seat configurations, gets a 69.2 kWh battery, a claimed 517 km MIDC driving range, a 204 hp electric motor and a long list of premium features.
More importantly, MG has priced it aggressively. The conventional outright-purchase
price starts at ₹19.49 lakh, while the company's Battery-as-a-Service programme brings the initial vehicle cost down to ₹13.99 lakh plus ₹4.90 per km as battery rental.
But pricing tells only part of the story.
On battery range, performance and fast-charging capability, Tata and Mahindra have some significant advantages. So, where exactly does the new MG fit?

The Hector Tomahawk EV is available in three trim levels — Excite, Exclusive and Essence — with the Essence offered in both five-seat and seven-seat configurations.

The BaaS figure should not be directly compared with the outright purchase prices of rival SUVs because the customer does not purchase the battery as part of the initial vehicle price.
MG says deliveries of the Tomahawk EV are scheduled to commence from September 2026.
MG Hector Tomahawk EV vs Tata Harrier EV
Among five-seat SUVs, the Tata Harrier EV is probably the most important rival to the Tomahawk.
The two take very different approaches.
While the Tomahawk focuses on price, cabin space and features, Tata offers larger battery choices, significantly stronger performance and even a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version.

The Tomahawk is 138 mm longer, around 30 mm taller and has a 69 mm longer wheelbase than the Harrier EV.
Its five-seat version also offers a substantial 610-litre boot, compared with the Harrier EV's 502-litre luggage capacity. MG says boot capacity increases to 1,053 litres when the second row is folded.
That gives the Tomahawk an important advantage for families carrying large amounts of luggage.
The Harrier EV, however, additionally provides front luggage storage, something the MG does not offer.
Battery And Range
The Hector Tomahawk EV uses a single 69.2 kWh battery pack.

The MG gets a front-mounted electric motor producing approximately:

It accelerates from 0–100 km/h in a claimed 8.2 seconds.
The Harrier EV RWD develops around:

But Tata's biggest advantage comes from the Harrier EV QWD.

The comparison becomes even more interesting against Mahindra's born-electric XEV 9e.
Unlike the Tomahawk, the XEV 9e has been developed around Mahindra's dedicated INGLO electric architecture and follows a much more performance-focused rear-wheel-drive layout.

The XEV 9e provides a substantial 663-litre rear boot plus a 150-litre frunk, giving it one of the best combined luggage capacities in the segment.

XEV 9e outputs depend on battery size.

This is arguably Mahindra's largest technical advantage.

Pricing
The XEV 9e originally started at ₹21.90 lakh and continues to sit above the Tomahawk at the entry level.
That means the MG's ₹19.49 lakh starting price undercuts it by more than ₹2 lakh even before considering MG's BaaS programme.

For an enthusiast or frequent long-distance EV user, the XEV 9e remains technically stronger.
For buyers who want a spacious premium electric SUV at a lower acquisition price, the Tomahawk makes a strong argument.

The XEV 9S is arguably the Tomahawk EV's closest rival because both are available as full-size family-oriented three-row electric SUVs.
Mahindra's advantage again comes from its INGLO EV platform and larger battery options.
MG's counter is aggressive pricing.

Price Changes Matter
The XEV 9S originally entered the market at ₹19.95 lakh.
However, Mahindra revised prices in July 2026.

Tomahawk EV's Biggest Weapon Is Price, Not Range
The comparison makes MG's strategy fairly clear.
The Hector Tomahawk EV is not attempting to win the specification race outright.
Mahindra offers considerably faster charging.
Both Mahindra models deliver longer claimed ranges.
The Harrier EV provides significantly stronger dual-motor performance and genuine AWD capability.
Instead, MG has concentrated on making the Tomahawk accessible.
At ₹19.49 lakh, it enters below the Harrier EV, XEV 9e and the currently priced XEV 9S.
The BaaS scheme pushes the initial acquisition price even lower to ₹13.99 lakh.
That could matter substantially in a segment where EV purchase price remains one of the biggest barriers to adoption.
5-Seater And 7-Seater Flexibility Could Be A Major Advantage
Another important advantage is something the specification sheet does not immediately reveal.
A customer considering the Tomahawk does not have to choose between an entirely different vehicle simply because seating requirements change.
MG offers: 5-seat Essence and 7-seat Excite, Exclusive and Essence variants
within the same model family.
The five-seat version delivers a large 610-litre luggage area and could appeal to customers who want the dimensions and cabin space of a large SUV without requiring a third row.
Meanwhile, the seven-seat version gives MG access to India's emerging electric family-SUV segment.

Vehicle-To-Home Adds Another Interesting Differentiator
One of the Tomahawk EV's more unusual technology features is Vehicle-to-Home, or V2H capability.
MG says the system can allow energy stored in the vehicle's battery to be supplied to compatible household loads.
It expands upon the Vehicle-to-Load concept already offered by several EV manufacturers and could eventually become useful for home backup applications where the required infrastructure is installed.
MG is also highlighting battery safety, stating that the 69.2 kWh pack has undergone more than 2,000 bench tests and 490 vehicle-level validations, along with continuous battery-management-system monitoring.
Which One Should You Buy?
There is no single winner because these four SUVs target subtly different buyers.
Choose MG Hector Tomahawk EV if:
You prioritise purchase price, family space, equipment and seating flexibility.
It is particularly attractive for buyers who want a seven-seat EV without immediately moving close to the ₹25–30 lakh price bracket.
The five-seat Essence could also appeal to customers prioritising a large boot and premium equipment over outright performance.
Choose Tata Harrier EV if:
You want a more capable SUV with AWD availability, stronger performance, greater maximum range and faster charging.
The 75 kWh QWD is especially compelling for buyers looking for electric performance combined with all-wheel-drive capability.
Choose Mahindra XEV 9e if:
You primarily need five seats and prioritise performance, range, charging speed and born-electric packaging.
Its 79 kWh version remains one of the strongest specifications packages available among Indian electric SUVs.
Choose Mahindra XEV 9S if:
You need three-row seating but do not want to compromise on battery size or charging performance.
With battery options extending to 79 kWh and a certified range of as much as 679 km, it remains the strongest long-distance proposition of these four on paper.
AutoPunditz Take
The MG Hector Tomahawk EV may actually become more disruptive because of its pricing than because of its specifications.
Mahindra has clearly set a higher technical benchmark with the INGLO-based XEV 9e and XEV 9S. Their higher charging capability, rear-wheel-drive architecture, stronger motors and longer certified ranges give them an advantage that is difficult to ignore.
Tata's Harrier EV is similarly stronger if outright performance and AWD capability matter.
But MG has identified another gap.
There are plenty of Indian families who do not necessarily need a 280+ hp electric SUV or 180 kW fast charging. What they want is a spacious, well-equipped family SUV with a usable driving range, familiar SUV proportions and an acquisition price they can justify.
That is precisely where the Hector Tomahawk EV could work.
A ₹19.49 lakh starting price means MG has managed to position a 4.7-metre electric SUV with a 69.2 kWh battery and seven seats below several smaller or similarly sized rivals.
And the ₹13.99 lakh BaaS entry point could become a powerful showroom marketing tool, even though buyers must carefully calculate the ₹4.90/km battery rental against their annual running before deciding whether BaaS or outright battery ownership makes better financial sense.
The other important differentiator is flexibility.
One vehicle can effectively challenge the Harrier EV and XEV 9e as a five-seater, while simultaneously competing against the XEV 9S as a seven-seater.
The Tomahawk therefore doesn't win the specification war.
It tries to win the value equation.
If MG can translate its claimed 517 km certification figure into dependable real-world
range, maintain competitive BaaS financing and deliver the promised feature package consistently across variants, the Hector Tomahawk EV could become one of the most significant additions to India's ₹20–30 lakh electric SUV market in 2026.
