MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV prices start at ₹25.69 lakh, while the Battery-as-a-Service option lowers the initial acquisition price to ₹21.79 lakh + ₹3.20/km
JSW MG Motor India has launched the MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV in India, marking one of the most significant developments yet in the country's mass-market electrified vehicle segment.
The new three-row SUV combines a petrol engine with a sizeable plug-in battery that allows it to operate as an electric vehicle for shorter journeys while retaining the flexibility of a petrol-powered vehicle for long-distance travel.
The Hector Tomahawk PHEV carries an introductory starting price of approximately ₹25.69 lakh ex-showroom. MG is also offering the entry version through its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) programme at ₹21.79 lakh plus a battery rental charge of ₹3.20 per kilometre.
Perhaps more importantly, MG claims more than 115 km of pure-electric driving range and over 1,100 km of total combined range, potentially allowing many owners to complete their everyday commute largely on electricity without suffering from range anxiety on highway journeys.

The BaaS structure separates the battery cost from the initial vehicle purchase price. This reduces the upfront acquisition cost, though customers need to factor in the per-kilometre battery rental while calculating total ownership costs.
1.5-Litre Petrol Engine + 20.5kWh Battery
The biggest talking point of the Hector Tomahawk is naturally its plug-in-hybrid powertrain.
Under the bonnet is a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which works together with a single electric motor and a 20.5kWh traction battery through a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission, or DHT.

The figures for the engine and electric motor should not simply be added together to arrive at a system output because their peak outputs do not necessarily occur simultaneously. MG's hybrid management system determines how the two propulsion sources work depending on the operating conditions.
More Than 115 Km Of Pure-Electric Range
MG claims the Tomahawk PHEV can cover over 115 km in electric-only operation.
That figure is unusually significant for a plug-in hybrid in the Indian context. A customer whose normal round-trip commute is substantially below 100 km could theoretically complete a large proportion of routine journeys without requiring the petrol engine, provided the battery is charged regularly.
Once a longer journey begins, however, the petrol powertrain provides the flexibility that a conventional battery EV cannot offer.
With both energy sources available, the Hector Tomahawk PHEV claims a combined driving range exceeding 1,100 km.
That could make the PHEV particularly relevant for customers who like the refinement and low running cost of electric driving but are reluctant to depend entirely on India's public fast-charging network for long highway trips.
It Can Be Plugged In — Unlike A Conventional Strong Hybrid
The distinction between a PHEV and the strong-hybrid vehicles already familiar to Indian buyers is important.
A conventional strong hybrid uses a relatively small battery and largely replenishes it through regenerative braking and the combustion engine. The driver normally does not plug the vehicle into an external charger.
The Hector Tomahawk PHEV uses a much larger 20.5kWh battery that can be charged externally.
MG says the PHEV can accept up to 3.3kW AC charging and also supports 25kW DC fast charging. A 3.3kW charger and installation are provided as standard according to MG's product information.
The underlying idea is straightforward: charge it regularly and use electricity for everyday driving, while allowing petrol to take over or assist whenever greater range is needed.
Based On MG's New ADAPT Platform
The Hector Tomahawk introduces MG's new ADAPT multi-energy architecture.
Rather than being developed solely around one type of propulsion system, the platform has been engineered to accommodate multiple new-energy powertrains, including:

The platform strategy gives MG greater flexibility to introduce different electrified powertrains according to customer demand and regulatory developments in India.

7-Seater Layout Standard On PHEV
Unlike the Tomahawk EV, which offers more than one seating configuration, the Hector Tomahawk PHEV is offered exclusively as a seven-seater.

The long 2,810mm wheelbase is particularly important for a vehicle intended to accommodate three seating rows.

Tomahawk Gets A Distinctive New Design
The Hector Tomahawk is substantially different visually from the existing Hector sold in India.
Its upright proportions and squared-off body lend it a more traditional SUV appearance. At the front, the PHEV gets a prominent dark grille, vertically oriented lighting elements and MG's illuminated branding.
Along the sides are pronounced wheel arches, substantial body cladding, roof rails and 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels.
The rear continues the upright theme with wraparound LED tail lamps and a chunky bumper treatment.
MG offers the PHEV in several exterior finishes, including Pearl White, Starry Black, Aurora Silver, Celadon Blue, Turquoise Green and Shadow Gold, with dual-tone treatments available on selected colours.
15.6-Inch Touchscreen Dominates The Cabin
The interior takes a technology-heavy approach, centred around a large 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen.

Bookings for the MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV have commenced.
However, buyers should note that the PHEV follows a different rollout schedule from the fully electric Tomahawk.
MG says PHEV test drives, showroom availability and customer deliveries are planned from November 2026. The Hector Tomahawk EV is scheduled to reach customers earlier, from September 2026.
Why The Hector Tomahawk PHEV Matters For India
The Hector Tomahawk is important for reasons extending beyond MG's own model range.
Until now, plug-in hybrids in India have largely been restricted to substantially more expensive luxury vehicles. MG describes the Hector Tomahawk as India's first mass-market, mass-produced plug-in hybrid electric vehicle engineered and manufactured in India.
That places it in an unusual position.
It isn't quite an EV, isn't merely a conventional hybrid and isn't dependent entirely on a combustion engine.
Instead, the Tomahawk attempts to address one of the central questions facing Indian buyers considering electrification: what happens when an EV needs to make a 700- or 1,000-km highway journey?
The answer MG is proposing is a battery large enough to make everyday EV use practical, combined with a petrol engine that eliminates dependence on charging stops during occasional long-distance journeys.
MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV Rivals
At present, the Tomahawk has no direct mass-market seven-seat PHEV rival in India.
Its pricing, however, puts it into consideration against several established premium three-row SUVs, including the:

It could also attract buyers considering electric SUVs but unwilling to transition completely away from liquid fuel.
That means the Tomahawk is less about fighting one direct competitor and more about convincing customers that PHEV technology offers a useful middle ground between ICE vehicles, strong hybrids and full EVs.
Auto Punditz Take
The Hector Tomahawk PHEV could prove more strategically important than its initial sales numbers suggest.
A 115+ km electric range fundamentally changes how a plug-in hybrid can be used. For an owner with access to home charging, the petrol engine could remain unused for a large proportion of normal city journeys. Yet the same customer can start a Bengaluru–Mumbai or Delhi–Jaipur highway journey without building the trip around public charging stations.
That combination addresses two major barriers to EV adoption simultaneously: charging availability and long-distance range anxiety.
There is, however, an important economic consideration.
At ₹25.69 lakh onwards, the Tomahawk is considerably more expensive than many conventional seven-seat SUVs. The ₹21.79 lakh BaaS proposition reduces the initial purchase price, but customers must understand the ₹3.20/km battery rental structure before comparing lifetime ownership costs.
PHEVs also deliver their strongest efficiency advantage when owners actually plug them in regularly. A customer who rarely charges the battery loses much of the technology's economic and environmental benefit.
Therefore, the Tomahawk PHEV makes the most sense for buyers with predictable daily driving and reliable home charging who also undertake regular long-distance journeys.
If that customer profile proves sizeable in India, the Hector Tomahawk may do something far more important than create another MG nameplate: it could establish the plug-in hybrid as a genuine mass-market powertrain category in India.
