Key Takeaways from September 2026
1. Hyundai Creta maintains its dominance
The Creta remains the clear market leader, with cumulative sales exceeding 1.43 lakh units. Its September performance also indicates sustained demand.
2. Maruti Suzuki has emerged as a major combined force
The Victoris and Grand Vitara together recorded 21,624 units in September, representing approximately 31% of the segment. This exceeded the Creta's individual sales, although Hyundai retained the leading model position.
3. Kia Seltos is closing in on the Victoris
The Seltos gained 877 units month-on-month, compared with the Victoris' 133-unit increase. The September gap narrowed to just 518 units.
4. Tata Sierra records a strong recovery
The Sierra's 28.2% monthly increase was the strongest among the segment's six highest-selling models, helping it move ahead of the Hyryder.
5. Toyota Hyryder and Honda Elevate face monthly declines
The Hyryder declined 13.6%, while the Elevate fell 54.8%. However, one month's performance alone is insufficient to establish a lasting demand trend.
6. Segment concentration remains high
The six highest-selling models accounted for approximately 94.8% of September volumes, leaving the remaining five models competing for a relatively small portion of the market.

Auto Punditz Take: Competition Intensifies as the Segment Approaches 70,000 Monthly Units
India's mid-size SUV market continues to be driven by a relatively small group of high-volume models. The Hyundai Creta remains the benchmark for individual model sales, but Maruti Suzuki's Victoris and Grand Vitara together provide a strong competitive challenge.
The Kia Seltos is another model to watch, particularly as its September performance brought it closer to the Victoris. Meanwhile, the Tata Sierra's recovery demonstrates its potential to challenge the established order if higher monthly volumes can be sustained.
The most interesting development is the increasing concentration of sales among the leading six models. While newer and lower-volume entrants have expanded customer choice, converting that presence into consistently high volumes remains challenging.
With September sales approaching 70,000 units, the mid-size SUV segment has demonstrated resilience following June's slowdown. The final quarter of 2026 will be important in determining whether the recovery translates into sustained growth.
For manufacturers, the challenge is no longer simply offering an SUV in this segment. The real differentiators will be product positioning, powertrain choice, competitive pricing, ownership experience and the ability to sustain monthly sales momentum.
