Pakistan’s passenger vehicle market delivered a year-on-year recovery in May 2026, but its scale and structure remained vastly different from neighbouring India. As per PAMA-reported data, Pakistan’s combined sales of cars, jeeps and pickups stood at 17,660 units, growing 19% YoY but declining 19.8% MoM after a stronger April. In comparison, India’s passenger vehicle market stood at a massive 4,40,808 units in the same month, making it roughly 25 times larger than Pakistan’s market.
While Pakistan remained heavily concentrated around a few high-volume models, led by the Suzuki Alto with 5,964 units, India’s demand was far more diversified across sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs, MPVs, CNG and EVs. The contrast highlights two very different market realities: Pakistan continues to be a compact, price-sensitive and entry-car-driven market, while India has evolved into a large, multi-segment automotive ecosystem with much broader consumer choice.
1. Pakistan Market Snapshot – May 2026
Pakistan’s PAMA-reported passenger vehicle market, including cars + jeeps/pickups, stood at 17,660 units in May 2026.
Category | May 2026 | May 2025 | YoY | Apr 2026 | MoM |
Passenger Cars | 13,211 | 11,143 | +18.6% | 17,387 | -24.0% |
Jeeps & Pickups | 4,449 | 3,692 | +20.5% | 4,628 | -3.9% |
Total Cars + Jeeps/Pickups | 17,660 | 14,835 | +19.0% | 22,015 | -19.8% |
The market grew strongly year-on-year, but the sharp month-on-month drop shows that April 2026 was unusually strong. Passenger cars took the bigger monthly hit, while SUVs/pickups remained relatively more stable. PAMA’s May 2026 PDF shows total passenger car sales of 13,211 units, compared with 11,143 units in May 2025 and 17,387 units in April 2026; the same report shows jeeps & pickups at 4,449 units in May 2026, compared with 3,692 units in May 2025 and 4,628 units in April 2026.

14 | Suzuki Cultus | Hatchback | 255 | Weak vs Alto/Swift |
15 | Hyundai Elantra | Sedan | 209 | Niche sedan volume |
Suzuki Alto was Pakistan’s undisputed bestseller in May 2026 with 5,964 units, far ahead of every other model/group. PAMA data also shows Toyota’s combined Corolla/Yaris/Corolla Cross group at 2,685 units, Honda Civic/City at 1,952 units and Suzuki Swift at 1,656 units.
3. Brand / OEM Trend: Suzuki Dominates, But SUVs Are Changing the Mix
Using PAMA-reported model groups, Suzuki remained the strongest brand presence in Pakistan. Alto alone contributed nearly 34% of the combined cars + jeeps/pickups market and about 45% of the passenger car market in May 2026.
Approximate brand/group contribution from PAMA-reported PVs:
Brand / Group | Key Models Included | May 2026 Volume | Approx. Share of PAMA Cars + Jeeps/Pickups |
Suzuki | Alto, Swift, Cultus, Every, Fronx, Ravi | 8,856 | 50.1% |
Toyota | Corolla/Yaris/Cross, Fortuner/IMVs | 3,496 | 19.8% |
Honda | Civic/City, BR-V/HR-V | 2,230 | 12.6% |
Sazgar | Haval, Tank, BAIC rows | 1,604+ | 9.1%+ |
Hyundai | Elantra, Sonata, Tucson, Porter, Santa Fe | 902 | 5.1% |
The most important point is concentration. Pakistan’s passenger vehicle market is still heavily dependent on a few nameplates. Alto is to Pakistan what the combined small-car portfolio is to India, but with much higher single-model dependence. In India, the top model Dzire had 24,546 units, but it accounted for only about 5.6% of the broader May 2026 PV market; in Pakistan, Alto alone accounted for about one-third of PAMA-reported PVs. India’s May 2026 market stood at 4,40,808 units, with Maruti Suzuki at 1,90,337 units and 43.2% share. (Autopunditz)
4. Segment Analysis: What Pakistan Buyers Bought in May 2026
Entry hatchbacks still rule
The Alto remains the backbone of Pakistan’s car market. Its 5,964-unit volume was more than the combined sales of several sedans and SUVs below it. This shows that affordability, fuel economy and ease of ownership remain the main buying triggers in Pakistan. PAMA shows Alto at 5,964 units in May 2026, compared with 3,409 units in May 2025 and 7,567 units in April 2026.
Sedans remain more relevant than in India
Unlike India, where SUVs and crossovers dominate the buyer conversation, Pakistan still shows strong sedan dependence. The combined Toyota Corolla/Yaris/Corolla Cross group sold 2,685 units, while Honda Civic/City sold 1,952 units in May 2026. Even with model grouping limitations, sedan-oriented products remain among Pakistan’s top three volume pools.
SUVs are gaining, led by Haval and Toyota
The biggest SUV signal is Haval by Sazgar, which sold 1,249 units in May 2026. This made it the strongest SUV group in PAMA data, ahead of Toyota Fortuner/IMVs at 811 units and Suzuki Fronx at 552 units. Haval’s presence shows how Chinese-origin SUVs have started disrupting the traditional Japanese-dominated Pakistani market.
New Chinese and crossover products are expanding choice
Tank, Jetour and Fronx add an important new layer to Pakistan’s market. Tank sold 355 units in May 2026 after only 16 units in April, while Jetour sold 200 units and Suzuki Fronx entered with 552 units. These are small compared with Alto, but they are meaningful because they indicate a shift from a sedan/hatchback market to a more diversified SUV/crossover market.

6. Key Differences Between Pakistan and India
1. Market scale is the biggest difference
Pakistan’s May 2026 PAMA-reported PV market was 17,660 units, while India’s was 4.41 lakh units. In other words, India sells more cars in a few days than Pakistan’s PAMA market sells in an entire month. This scale allows India to support many more OEMs, more model variants, wider powertrain choices and stronger localisation.
2. Pakistan is far more model-concentrated
Pakistan’s market depends heavily on Alto, Toyota’s sedan family, Honda Civic/City and a few SUV groups. India’s top 10 is far more spread out across sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs and MPVs. In India, the top 10 included Dzire, Fronx, Ertiga, Punch, Nexon, Baleno, Wagon R, Swift, Scorpio and Creta, showing much broader demand distribution.
3. India’s market has stronger SUV and MPV depth
Pakistan does have SUV growth through Haval, Fortuner/IMV, Tucson, Fronx, Tank and Jetour. But India’s SUV/MPV depth is much larger: Fronx, Punch, Nexon, Scorpio and Creta were all in the top 10, while Ertiga crossed 20,000 units as an MPV. (Acko Drive)
4. Alternative fuels are a much bigger India story
India’s May 2026 demand was supported by CNG and EV momentum. Reuters reported that Maruti Suzuki’s CNG bookings jumped 40% after fuel prices rose, while Maruti recorded around 78,000 CNG vehicle sales in May. Tata’s EV momentum also supported India’s broader market growth.
Pakistan’s electrification story is still early, though it is developing. Reuters reported that Lucky Motors partnered with China’s GAC to launch EVs in Pakistan, with local assembly planned by December 2026, while Pakistan has a policy ambition of 30% vehicles being electric by 2030.

Strategic Takeaways
Pakistan’s May 2026 car market was recovering YoY, but not yet broad-based. The +19% YoY growth looks healthy, but the -20% MoM fall shows the market is still volatile. Alto continues to dominate, and that makes the market heavily dependent on affordability.
SUVs are the next growth battlefield in Pakistan. Haval, Tank, Jetour and Fronx show that new products are entering the market, especially from Chinese and crossover-led portfolios. This could gradually reduce the historic dependence on Suzuki-Toyota-Honda sedans and hatchbacks.
India is in a different league on scale and diversity. India’s May 2026 PV market was not just larger, but structurally deeper. A single Indian bestseller such as Dzire sold 24,546 units, more than Pakistan’s entire PAMA-reported cars + jeeps/pickups market of 17,660 units.
The core contrast: Pakistan is still a compact, concentrated, affordability-led market. India is a large, multi-segment market where small cars, compact SUVs, MPVs, CNG and EVs are all contributing simultaneously.
Data note: Pakistan numbers below are based on PAMA-reported wholesale/sales data. This is not the full vehicle registration market and may exclude some non-PAMA brands or imports. For a like-to-like India comparison, we have used wholesale/passenger vehicle dispatch data.
