Segmentwise Car Sales for August 2021 - SUVs dominate!

SUV sales have risen to an all-time high in the Indian market and almost all the OEMs have an offering in the SUV category. And Compact SUV has picked the fancy of the automakers as it has garnered tremendous volumes over the years. Do note that 10 out of 15 mass-market OEMs in India have a product in the Compact SUV category and all 15 out of 15 OEMs have an offering in the overall SUV category! Both Compact SUV and Mid SUV segment were able to outsell the Compact, Premium & Entry Hatchback segments.

Aug'21 recorded a decline in Compact/Entry Hatch, MUV, Compact Sedan, and Premium Sedan segments. It is evident that the new car buyer is upgrading for a Premium Hatch/Compact SUV or else is opting for a used car. People shying away from the entry/compact hatches has made OEMs like Hyundai think if it is feasible to launch a model (Casper) in the category.

Even after the Amaze MMC (Mid-Model Change) launch in Aug'21; the Compact Sedan segment recorded a decline of 22 percent and was primarily impacted by the drop in Dzire volumes. Maruti Dzire's dispatches fell 58 percent and the model slipped to the second position in the table. Honda Amaze emerged as the best-selling Sub-4m Compact Sedan for August 2021.
