Tata Avinya EVs Will Use Chery-JLR’s Freelander Platform — Avinya X Coming in 2027

Tata Motors has changed its plans for the Avinya EV range. Instead of using Jaguar Land Rover’s EMA platform as originally planned, Tata will now build Avinya cars on the Freelander platform developed jointly by JLR and Chinese automaker Chery.

The first production model from this range, called the Avinya X, is expected to arrive in 2027.

Why This Matters

Avinya is Tata’s premium EV brand — a step above its regular Tata.ev cars. The name comes from Sanskrit and means “innovation.” Tata wants Avinya to compete at a higher level, not just in India but also in global markets.

The original plan was disrupted after JLR reportedly shelved its India EV platform plans. That left Tata without the expected base for its premium EV programme. Moving to the Chery-JLR Freelander platform gives Tata a faster route to market instead of starting from scratch.

What Is the Freelander Platform?

In 2024, JLR and Chery revived the old Freelander name in China as a standalone EV brand under their joint venture. The first product on this platform is expected to be the Freelander 8 — a large SUV that can support battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, and range-extender powertrains.

For Tata, the key benefit is access to a modern and ready EV platform without waiting years to develop one fully in-house.

The Avinya X

The Avinya X is expected to be a premium electric SUV. Tata plans at least two vehicles on this platform — the first in 2027 and another around 2029.

Early units may be assembled in India using kits shipped from China, with local manufacturing expected to increase over time.

This would position Avinya above the Nexon EV, Curvv EV, Harrier EV, and Sierra EV. It will likely target rivals such as Mahindra’s new electric SUVs, MG, Hyundai, Kia, and possibly Tesla.

Why This Move Makes Sense For Tata

Speed. The Avinya programme was already running late. A ready platform can help Tata cut development time.

Better technology. Chinese EV platforms are among the most advanced in the world in battery packaging, software, electronics, and cost efficiency. Tata can use this route to bridge the technology gap faster.

A stronger answer to Mahindra. Mahindra’s new electric SUVs have raised expectations in design, performance, and technology. Tata still leads India’s EV market by volume, but the premium EV space is becoming more competitive.

Global ambitions. Tata wants Avinya to be more than an India-only product. The Freelander platform could give it the scale and technology needed for international markets.

The Risk: Dependence On China

This strategy also comes with risks. A China-linked platform means Tata may depend on Chinese supply chains, especially in the early years.

Key challenges include software, data, localisation, and brand perception. Tata must ensure Avinya feels like a genuine Tata product, not a rebadged Chinese SUV. Success depends on quickly localising components, controlling costs, and delivering quality.

Tata has made a practical decision. Instead of waiting for the perfect platform, it is using the wider Tata-JLR-Chery ecosystem to bring a premium EV to market faster. The Avinya X could become one of Tata’s most important launches of the decade. It will test whether Tata can move from being India’s EV volume leader to a serious premium EV player.
