Hyundai Creta creates history by becoming India's highest-selling car in May 2021! It is for the first time that a Non-Maruti model has emerged as the bestseller in the Indian market for a very long time. The dynamics changed as the Maruti Suzuki plant was shut for over half of the month and the dispatches were impacted heavily (source).
Only 3 out of the Top 10 cars came from Maruti Suzuki’s stable. Also, 3 Hyundai models fared in the list. Kia had 2 models and Mahindra/Tata had 1 each in the Top 10.
Hyundai Creta has been India's No.1 Selling SUV for quite a while. In May 2021, it emerged as India's highest-selling passenger car for the first time in its lifetime. The Mid SUV overtook the likes of Swift, Alto, and Baleno to achieve this feat.
Maruti Suzuki dispatches were majorly impacted by the production cut and is reflecting in the figures here. Do note that the retail phenomena may be quite different. Swift recorded one of the highest M-o-M declines and hence slipped to the second spot in the ranking table.
Sonet emerged as Kia's best-selling car and India's third highest-selling car for May 2021. The Compact SUV sales declined by just 14 percent in May 2021 over April 2021.
Tata Nexon ranked fourth in the list and was also India's third-largest selling SUV for May 2021 (after Creta & Sonet). Nexon has been steadily holding Tata's volumes and has consistently overtaken Tiago as the OEM's best-selling car!
Maruti Dzire was the only sedan in the Top 10 and ranked fifth in May 2021. The model still carries its value-for-money tag and is finding buyers accordingly.
Hyundai Venue fell short of Sonet and Nexon and slipped to the sixth spot. Seems the production was aligned to manufacture a higher number of Creta's in May 2021.
Maruti Baleno sales dipped over 70 percent M-o-M and the model ranked seventh in the list.
This is the first time Kia shall have 2 models in the Top 10 and 1 model in the Top 5 selling cars of the month. Seltos ranked eighth with dispatches of 4,277 units in May 2021.
Hyundai's i10 Nios ranked 9th and 3,804 units were shipped to the dealers in May 2021. It was the third-ranked hatch in the Top 10 (after Swift & Baleno).
Mahindra Bolero made an entry into the Top 10 with dispatches of 3,517 units. It was also Mahindra's best-selling model for May 2021.
