Upcoming 7-Seater Hybrid SUVs in India – Kia Sorento, MG Hector Hawk, Toyota Hyryder 7-Seater & More

India’s three-row SUV market is preparing for a major electrification push, with several manufacturers developing new 7-seater SUVs equipped with hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrains.
Until recently, strong-hybrid technology in India was largely concentrated in five-seater SUVs and premium MPVs such as the Toyota Innova Hycross. That could change significantly over the next couple of years as manufacturers including Kia, Toyota, Hyundai, Renault and JSW MG Motor India introduce larger electrified SUVs.
Some of these models are already close to launch, while others remain under development for 2027-28. Here are five important upcoming three-row hybrid SUVs worth watching.
1. MG Hector Hawk – Launch Expected on August 26, 2026
The first major arrival is expected to be the MG Hector Hawk, an all-new three-row SUV from JSW MG Motor India. The Hector Hawk is expected to make its India debut on August 26, 2026, and could become one of the most significant additions to MG’s Indian portfolio this year. Current reports suggest that both plug-in hybrid and fully electric versionsare being prepared.
The upcoming SUV is understood to have links with the Wuling Starlight 560 sold in overseas markets. The plug-in hybrid version is expected to combine a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with an electric motor and approximately 20.5kWh battery pack.
International specifications point towards combined output of around 197hp, while the PHEV could offer close to 100km of electric-only driving range under the CLTC test cycle. Final India specifications may differ. A pure-electric Hector Hawk is also expected, potentially offering a claimed driving range of over 500km, depending on configuration.
The Hector Hawk is likely to sit above the existing Hector family while remaining below the Gloster in MG India's SUV hierarchy.

2. Kia Sorento Hybrid – India Launch on September 4
Kia is preparing one of its biggest premium SUV launches for India with the Sorento, which has been confirmed for launch on September 4, 2026. Pre-bookings for the SUV have already commenced, and the Sorento will become Kia India's flagship combustion-engine-based SUV while also marking the company's entry into the country's hybrid SUV segment.
The international Sorento Hybrid uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor, producing approximately 230PS depending on market specification. Power is transmitted through a six-speed automatic gearbox.
India is also expected to receive a diesel-powered Sorento alongside the hybrid.
The SUV will offer three-row seating and is expected to be available with premium equipment including:

Level 2 ADAS
Panoramic sunroof
Ventilated front seats

The Sorento will occupy a higher segment than the Seltos and Carens Clavis and is expected to compete with SUVs including the Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tayron and Jeep Meridian. With the Sorento Hybrid, Kia will also gain an early-mover advantage in India's relatively underdeveloped premium three-row strong-hybrid SUV space.
3. Renault Duster-Based 7-Seater Hybrid SUV
Renault is also preparing a larger three-row SUV based on the architecture underpinning the latest-generation Duster. The SUV is expected to draw considerable inspiration from the international Renault Boreal/Dacia Bigster family and could arrive in India during 2027. Reports suggest Renault intends to introduce its new three-row SUV before or during FY2027-28.
The model is expected to use Renault's new-generation modular architecture and sit above the Duster. Several petrol and electrified powertrains are under consideration globally, including a hybrid setup. The India-spec SUV could eventually share technology with the Duster's electrified variants.
The recently introduced Duster itself forms an important part of Renault's renewed India strategy. Renault has identified India as a key market under its broader International Game Plan and is attempting to rebuild its presence in the country's rapidly expanding SUV segment.
The seven-seater SUV could therefore become Renault's answer to models such as the:

4. Hyundai Ni1i – New 7-Seater Strong Hybrid SUV
Hyundai is reportedly developing an entirely new three-row SUV specifically with markets such as India in mind. Known internally as the Ni1i, the upcoming SUV is expected to sit above the Alcazar and could share some components and technologies with Hyundai's future-generation Creta family.
Unlike the Alcazar, however, the Ni1i is expected to feature its own body design and more premium positioning. Most importantly, reports indicate Hyundai could introduce its upcoming 1.5-litre petrol strong-hybrid powertrain with the SUV.
The vehicle may also be produced at Hyundai's Pune manufacturing facility as the company increases localisation and expands capacity in India.
A launch is currently expected around 2028, making it one of the longer-term models on this list. The Ni1i could eventually compete with upcoming three-row SUVs from Toyota, Maruti Suzuki, Kia and Renault. Its arrival would also represent a major step in Hyundai's electrification strategy, especially as strong hybrids continue gaining acceptance among Indian buyers looking for lower fuel consumption without depending entirely on public charging infrastructure.
5. Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder 7-Seater
Toyota is also expected to expand the successful Urban Cruiser Hyryder family with a new three-row derivative. The upcoming SUV is expected to retain the basic architecture and powertrain strategy of the current Hyryder while receiving a larger body capable of accommodating seven occupants.
Most importantly, Toyota is expected to continue offering its 1.5-litre strong-hybrid powertrain, alongside a more affordable petrol-based electrified configuration depending on the final product strategy. The existing Urban Cruiser Hyryder already uses Toyota's strong-hybrid technology and has established the brand in India's midsize hybrid SUV segment.

Why 7-Seater Hybrid SUVs Could Become the Next Big Segment
India's SUV market has steadily moved towards larger, more premium vehicles, while buyers are simultaneously becoming more conscious of fuel costs. That creates an interesting opportunity for hybrid technology.
Traditional three-row SUVs typically use larger petrol or diesel engines. Strong-hybrid systems can significantly reduce petrol consumption in urban driving while retaining the long-distance convenience of an internal combustion engine. Plug-in hybrids go a step further by providing meaningful electric-only driving capability while retaining a petrol engine for longer journeys.
The MG Hector Hawk PHEV will explore the latter approach, whereas SUVs such as the Kia Sorento, upcoming Toyota three-row Hyryder and future Hyundai Ni1i are expected to rely primarily on strong-hybrid technology.
Auto Punditz Take
The arrival of several three-row hybrid SUVs could mark the next important phase of India's electrified passenger-vehicle market. Until now, the Toyota Innova Hycross has been one of the few mainstream examples combining strong-hybrid technology with genuine seven- or eight-seat practicality. Toyota currently offers the Innova Hycross Hybrid in both seven- and eight-seat configurations.
That advantage is unlikely to remain uncontested. Kia's Sorento Hybrid is almost ready to enter the market, while MG's Hector Hawk will bring plug-in hybrid technology into the equation. Renault, Hyundai and Toyota are simultaneously preparing products aimed at more mainstream three-row SUV buyers.
The next 18-24 months could therefore transform India's 7-seater SUV market from a segment dominated by petrol and diesel engines into one where strong hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles increasingly compete alongside conventional powertrains.
For buyers who want seven-seat practicality but are not yet ready to switch completely to an EV, this emerging generation of hybrid SUVs could offer one of the most practical middle paths.
