Bengaluru Drives Karnataka’s EV Growth: 1 in 6 New Vehicles Registered in August 2026 Was Electric
Bengaluru continues to emerge as the epicentre of Karnataka’s electric mobility transition, accounting for more than half of the state’s EV registrations in August 2026. Electric vehicles made up 17.5% of all new vehicle registrations in the city during the month.
Bengaluru’s shift towards electric mobility gathered further momentum in August 2026, with 13,389 electric vehicles registered during the month, according to Karnataka transport department data reported by The Times of India. The city recorded a total of 76,508 new vehicle registrations, putting EV penetration at 17.5% — roughly one electric vehicle for every six vehicles registered.
The numbers are particularly significant because Bengaluru alone accounted for 50.3% of Karnataka’s EV registrations during August. Karnataka registered 26,636 EVs during the month, highlighting the outsized role played by the state capital in driving electrification.

Electric two-wheelers remained the backbone of Bengaluru's EV market. With 9,453 registrations, they represented roughly 71% of all EVs registered in the city during August. Electric cars contributed another 1,258 units, or around 9% of monthly EV registrations.
On an average day, that works out to approximately 300 new electric two-wheelers and 40 electric cars joining Bengaluru’s roads, along with roughly 90 EVs from commercial and other vehicle categories.
Bengaluru Now Has More Than 4.9 Lakh EVs
The scale becomes even clearer when cumulative registrations are considered.
As of August 30, 2026, Bengaluru had accumulated more than 4.9 lakh registered electric vehicles, compared with nearly 8.9 lakh EVs across Karnataka. Bengaluru therefore represents approximately 56% of Karnataka's entire registered EV fleet.

This mix also shows that Bengaluru's electrification story extends beyond personal mobility. Electric taxis, three-wheelers and buses are increasingly contributing to commercial and public transport electrification.
Karnataka EV Fleet Approaches 9 Lakh
Karnataka's cumulative electric vehicle fleet stood at nearly 8.9 lakh units by August 2026, including approximately 7.3 lakh electric two-wheelers and 65,915 electric cars.
The long-term growth has been substantial. Karnataka recorded only 7,155 EV registrations in FY2020, rising to 46,140 in FY2022. Annual EV registrations crossed the one-lakh mark in FY2023 and reached approximately 2.3 lakh units in FY2026. That makes FY2026 registrations more than 32 times the FY2020 level.
EV Road Tax Return Hasn't Stopped Bengaluru's Momentum So Far
An important backdrop to the August numbers is Karnataka's decision earlier this year to withdraw the road-tax exemption previously available to many electric four-wheelers.
The Karnataka Motor Vehicles Taxation (Amendment) Act, 2026 received the Governor's assent on April 9 and was notified on April 10. Under the revised structure, electric four-wheelers now attract lifetime road tax based on vehicle cost:
Up to ₹10 lakh: 5%
₹10 lakh–₹25 lakh: 8%
Above ₹25 lakh: 10%
Electric two-wheelers remain exempt.
The August registrations suggest that, at least in aggregate, Bengaluru's EV market has continued expanding despite the higher acquisition cost for electric cars. It is worth noting, however, that the data alone cannot establish that the tax change had no effect: registrations are also influenced by model launches, pricing, fleet purchases, financing and the much larger contribution of electric two-wheelers, which continue to enjoy the exemption.
EVs Are Growing Fast, But Still a Small Part of Bengaluru's Fleet
The rapid pace of new EV adoption needs to be viewed alongside Bengaluru's enormous installed vehicle base.
The city had approximately 1.3 crore registered vehicles as of August 30, including more than 88.5 lakh two-wheelers and nearly 25.5 lakh cars. The 4.9 lakh EV fleet therefore represents only around 3.8% of all registered vehicles in Bengaluru.
That creates an interesting contrast: EVs account for around 17.5% of new monthly registrations, but only 3.8% of the existing fleet.
In other words, Bengaluru is electrifying much faster at the margin than its overall vehicle fleet figures currently suggest.

Bengaluru's August numbers underline three important trends in India's EV transition.
First, electric two-wheelers continue to drive mass-market electrification. Their 71% share of Bengaluru's monthly EV registrations demonstrates why scooters and motorcycles are likely to remain crucial to India's EV volumes.
Second, Bengaluru's 50% share of Karnataka's monthly EV registrations and 56% share of its cumulative fleetshow how concentrated EV adoption remains around major urban markets. Charging infrastructure, higher utilisation, shorter urban commutes and a wider choice of vehicles can all support adoption in metropolitan areas.
Finally, the difference between 17.5% EV penetration in new registrations and just 3.8% in the existing vehicle fleethighlights the long replacement cycle ahead. Even with strong new-EV penetration, transforming the overall vehicle population will take considerably longer.
For automakers, Bengaluru remains one of India's most important markets for testing whether EV adoption can move beyond the early-adopter phase and establish itself as a mainstream powertrain choice.
