The Scorpio alone accounted for approximately 19% of the diesel-only market. Its average monthly sales stood at an impressive 14,401 units, making it the only diesel model to average more than 10,000 units per month during the period.

  • The Mahindra Bolero secured second place with sales of 58,457 units, registering a healthy 16% year-on-year increase. The model added 8,254 units over its H1 2025 performance. Its average monthly volume reached 9,743 units, while its diesel market share remained broadly stable at approximately 13%.

  • The Mahindra XUV7XO climbed from fourth position in H1 2025 to third place in H1 2026. Sales increased by 29%, from 32,690 units to 42,190 units. The model recorded the third-highest absolute growth among established vehicles, adding 9,500 units during the period. Its diesel market share improved from 8% to 9%, while average monthly sales stood at 7,032 units.

  • In contrast, the Hyundai Creta slipped from third to fourth position. Diesel Creta sales declined by 4% to 40,116 units, compared with 41,675 units in H1 2025.

Its diesel market share also dropped from 11% to 9%, reflecting increased competition from Mahindra and Kia SUVs.

  • The Mahindra Thar Roxx retained fifth position with sales of 37,945 units, representing a 19% increase over the previous year. Its average monthly diesel volume stood at 6,324 units.

  • The regular Mahindra Thar performed even better in percentage terms. Sales increased by 35%, from 17,640 units to 23,860 units, helping the model move from seventh to sixth position. Together, the Thar and Thar Roxx recorded 61,805 diesel units during H1 2026.

  • Kia Seltos was among the biggest gainers during the first half of 2026. Diesel sales increased by 54%, from 14,844 units to 22,906 units. The Seltos consequently moved from ninth position in H1 2025 to seventh place in H1 2026. Its market share improved from approximately 4% to 5%, while average monthly sales reached 3,818 units. The strong performance suggests that diesel continues to be an important powertrain option in the highly competitive midsize SUV segment.

  • The newly introduced Tata Sierra made a strong debut, recording 22,764 diesel units during H1 2026. With an average monthly volume of 3,794 units, the Sierra entered the rankings directly in eighth position. The model accounted for approximately 5% of the diesel market covered by the top 20 vehicles. Its addition also provided a substantial boost to Tata Motors’ overall diesel volumes.

  • The Kia Sonet recorded the highest percentage growth among models that were available in both periods. Sales increased by 67%, from 10,936 units to 18,290 units. The compact SUV moved from twelfth to tenth position and increased its diesel market share from around 3% to 4%.

  • Toyota Fortuner recorded almost flat sales at 17,169 units, compared with 17,088 units during H1 2025. Despite the stable volume, the Fortuner slipped from eighth to eleventh position as faster-growing rivals moved ahead. The Fortuner continued to average 2,862 units per month, underlining its strong position in the premium ladder-frame SUV segment.

  • Diesel sales of the Hyundai Venue increased by 34%, from 9,856 units to 13,214 units. However, its rank remained unchanged at thirteenth position.

  • Mahindra XUV 3XO registered a more moderate increase of 8%, reaching 13,331 units. It slipped from eleventh to twelfth position despite the growth.

  • Tata Nexon diesel sales also increased marginally by 4% to 10,004 units, retaining fourteenth place.

  • Kia Carens registered one of the sharpest declines among high-volume diesel models. Sales fell by 32%, from 12,810 units to 8,671 units, resulting in a drop from tenth to fifteenth position.

  • Kia Syros recorded the largest percentage decline in the table. Its diesel sales fell by 83%, from 7,632 units to just 1,324 units. The model slipped from sixteenth to nineteenth place, while its average monthly diesel volume declined to only 265 units.

  • Tata Safari diesel sales declined marginally by 1% to 7,808 units, while the Tata Harrier recorded an 11% decline to 6,038 units. The Safari retained sixteenth position, but the Harrier remained seventeenth. Their combined H1 2026 sales stood at 13,846 units, considerably lower than the volumes recorded by several newer and more compact diesel SUVs.

  • Hyundai Alcazar also declined by 10% to 2,075 units, averaging only 346 units per month.

  • Mahindra’s six models in the ranking—the Scorpio, Bolero, XUV700/7XO, Thar Roxx, Thar and XUV 3XO—collectively sold approximately 2,62,186 units during H1 2026. Key takeaways

The H1 2026 diesel sales data highlights that diesel demand remains concentrated around SUVs, MPVs and rugged utility vehicles. While diesel has largely disappeared from the hatchback and sedan segments, it continues to attract customers seeking stronger torque, better highway efficiency and higher load-carrying capability.

Mahindra remained the clear market leader, occupying five of the top six positions. Kia emerged as another major winner, with the Seltos and Sonet recording growth of 54% and 67%, respectively.

At the same time, models such as the Hyundai Creta, Toyota Innova, Kia Carens, Tata Harrier and Kia Syros registered declines. The introduction of the Tata Sierra added fresh volume and helped expand the overall diesel market represented by the leading 20 vehicles.

Despite tightening emission regulations and the growing adoption of petrol, hybrid and electric vehicles, H1 2026 sales show that diesel remains highly relevant in India’s SUV-dominated passenger vehicle market.
