India’s mid-size SUV segment continued its strong run in May 2026, recording 1,17,332 units compared to 88,675 units in May 2025. This marks a healthy 32.3% year-on-year growth, showing that buyer preference for larger, feature-loaded SUVs remains strong despite rising competition across price bands.
The segment was led by the Mahindra Scorpio, followed closely by the Hyundai Creta, while Maruti Suzuki’s new Victoris made a strong debut with over 10,000 units.

Mahindra Scorpio topped the mid SUV sales chart in May 2026 with 15,774 units, registering a 9.5% YoY growth. With a 13.4% segment share, Scorpio remained the strongest performer in this category.
Hyundai Creta secured the second position with 15,235 units, growing 2.5% YoY over May 2025. Its segment share stood at 13.0%, only slightly behind the Scorpio.
Maruti Suzuki Victoris recorded 10,853 units and captured a 9.2% segment share.The Victoris has helped Maruti strengthen its position in a segment where it has traditionally faced strong competition from Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, and Toyota.
Mahindra Thar ranked fourth with 10,787 units, growing 3.8% YoY. The model held a 9.2% segment share, nearly matching the Victoris.
Kia Seltos was one of the strongest YoY performers in the segment. Sales stood at 10,597 units, compared to 6,082 units in May 2025, resulting in a massive 74.2% YoY growth.
Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara recorded 9,366 units, growing 80.2% YoY. It was the sixth best-selling mid SUV with an 8.0% segment share.
Toyota sibling, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, sold 8,664 units, growing 14.4% YoY and securing a 7.4% share.
Mahindra had a commanding presence in the May 2026 mid SUV chart. The brand placed seven models in the top 19 list: Scorpio, Thar, XUV 7XO, Bolero, 9S, XEV 9e, and BE 6. Mahindra’s combined contribution from these models stood at 51,175 units, giving it a dominant position in the segment. The brand’s strength comes from its wide SUV portfolio covering rugged, lifestyle, family, and electric SUV buyers.
Tata Harrier recorded 2,815 units, growing a strong 214.9% YoY from 894 units in May 2025. This was one of the highest growth rates in the segment.
Tata Safari saw a slight decline of 4.7% YoY, with sales at 1,057 units compared to 1,109 units last year. Tata’s Curvv also declined 45.2% YoY, selling 1,680 units in May 2026.

Conclusion
May 2026 was a strong month for India’s mid SUV segment, with overall volumes growing 32.3% YoY to 1,17,332 units. The Mahindra Scorpio emerged as the best-selling mid SUV, narrowly ahead of the Hyundai Creta.
The biggest story, however, was the broadening of competition. Maruti Suzuki’s Victoris entered the top three, Kia Seltos and Grand Vitara posted strong growth, and Mahindra continued to dominate with multiple SUVs across different sub-segments.
The numbers clearly show that India’s mid SUV market is no longer dependent on just one or two models. Buyers now have more choices across rugged SUVs, urban family SUVs, hybrids, lifestyle models, and EVs — making this one of the most competitive and fast-growing segments in the Indian passenger vehicle market.
