  • Maruti Suzuki Baleno topped the petrol-car ranking with sales of 83,552 units during January–June 2026. Its volumes increased by 13,604 units, translating into 19% year-on-year growth. Baleno retained around 6% of the petrol-only passenger vehicle market, underlining the continued relevance of premium hatchbacks despite the growing preference for SUVs.

  • The Maruti Swift recorded sales of 81,046 units, almost unchanged from the 81,165 units sold during H1 2025. Its volumes declined marginally by 119 units. Despite the stable sales performance, the Swift slipped from first to second position as the Baleno registered stronger growth. Its petrol-market share reduced from approximately 7% to 6%. The hatchback averaged close to 13,508 units per month during the six-month period.

  • Tata Punch was the third-best-selling petrol car in H1 2026, recording 61,701 units. Sales increased by 14,036 units over the corresponding period of 2025, resulting in strong growth of 29%. The Punch moved up sharply from eighth place in H1 2025 to third place in H1 2026. Its share of the petrol-only market increased from 4% to 5%. With an average of 10,284 units per month, the Punch remained Tata Motors’ highest-selling petrol model.

  • Maruti Fronx secured fourth place with sales of 61,565 units. However, volumes declined by 3,754 units, or 6%, compared with H1 2025. Its ranking fell from third to fourth, while its petrol-market share remained broadly stable at around 5%. The crossover averaged approximately 10,261 units per month.

  • Maruti Alto was one of the biggest gainers during H1 2026. Sales increased by 38% from 42,816 units to 59,165 units. The entry-level hatchback gained five positions, moving from tenth place in H1 2025 to fifth place in H1 2026. Its market share also increased from 3% to 4%. Alto recorded an average monthly volume of approximately 9,861 units, indicating renewed demand for affordable entry-level cars.

  • Hyundai Venue registered sales of 55,750 units, an increase of 11,603 units over H1 2025. Its 26% growth helped the compact SUV climb from ninth to sixth position. Venue’s petrol-only market share remained at approximately 4%, while its monthly sales average stood at 9,292 units. Venue was Hyundai’s best-selling petrol model during the period, ahead of the Creta, i20 and Exter.

  • Maruti Dzire finished seventh with 50,865 units, registering a marginal decline of 1%. Its rank dropped from sixth to seventh.

  • Tata Nexon followed closely with 50,240 petrol units, recording robust year-on-year growth of 31%. Nexon’s petrol volumes increased by 11,944 units, enabling it to climb from twelfth to eighth position. Its petrol-market share increased from 3% to 4%, reflecting stronger demand for its petrol variants.

  • Maruti Brezza recorded the steepest decline among the top 10 petrol cars. Its volumes fell by 14% to 49,096 units, compared with 56,769 units during H1 2025. The Brezza consequently dropped from fourth to ninth place. Its petrol-market share declined from 5% to 4%.

  • Hyundai Creta finished only two units behind the Brezza, with sales of 49,094 units. Creta petrol volumes declined by 8%, resulting in a fall from fifth to tenth position. Although both SUVs remained among India’s 10 best-selling petrol cars, their lower petrol volumes could also indicate a greater contribution from diesel and other powertrain options within their respective model portfolios.

  • Kia was one of the standout performers in the petrol-car segment during H1 2026. The Kia Sonet sold 43,945 units, representing 28% growth over H1 2025. It improved its ranking from fourteenth to twelfth.

  • The Kia Seltos delivered an even stronger performance, with petrol sales rising by 81% to 39,899 units. The Seltos gained nine positions, climbing from twenty-second place to thirteenth.
