SUVs are the talk of the town and is currently the most preferred segment (both for the consumers & the OEMs) in the Indian sub-continent right now. We generally categorize SUVs into Compact SUV, Mid SUV & Premium SUV based on the length and price range. However; we have collated all into a single ranking table and presenting the same to see the bigger picture of how the SUVs fared as a segment in FY2020 (Apr’19 to Mar’20). As assumed; SUVs managed to grow 3% in FY20 v/s FY19; while the auto industry as a whole degrew by -17.3% YoY! SUVs managed to post a positive growth even when the industry as such was tumbling and speaks of how the segment has made an impact in the past few years. SUV Sales in India for FY2020 v/s FY2019 –
Maruti’s Brezza took the Top Spot as the Best Selling SUV for the Fiscal Year and was the only SUV in India to cross 1 Lakh units sales in the 12 month period. However; owing to stiff competition from Venue and other new entrants in the segment Brezza sales fell down -30% YoY.
Hyundai made a strong entry with Venue and ranked second in the table. Venue was able to topple Brezza from the Top spot many months in the FY and it even outdid its ageing sibling – the Creta. Venue even cemented Hyundai’s position in the SUV Market Share.
The ageing Creta was rightly challenged by ‘a brother from a different mother’ – Kia’s Seltos. Do note that Seltos is just 90 units behind Creta in the comparison. Also to be noted that Seltos was in the market only since Aug’20 and is pitted against the 12 month sales of Creta (or any other model).
Kia’s Seltos took the SUV world by storm and outdid all the models in the segment quite consistently – It was the best selling SUV continuously for the past 3 months and fared better than the compact SUVs as well!
Tata Nexon ranked 5th and was also Tata’s best selling SUV! It was commendable that Nexon fared better than the likes of Ecosport and even the newly launched XUV300.
There was not a single Mahindra model in the Top 5 selling SUVs – speaks of how M&M is slowly losing hold in the SUV race. Mahindra’s were once termed as the ‘Maruti of the SUV segment’ is losing the share in the segment exponentially. It is high time M&M protects both its turf and volumes in the segment now.
