Highlights
Petrol cars remained the top sellers, contributing 57.5% to FY2025 (April 2024 - March 2025). However, petrol vehicle sales have been declining over the years - it was 61% in H1 2024.
CNG passenger vehicle sales catapulted to 19.4% and outsold the diesel cars! Maruti, Tata, Hyundai, and Toyota primarily benefited from this shift.
Diesel passenger vehicle sales contributed to 18% of the Indian PV market. Mahindra, Kia, Toyota, Hyundai, Tata & Jeep are still present in the segment.
EV car sales contribution was 2.7% in FY2025 and was higher than Hybrid sales. It is interesting to see that almost 58% of JSW-MG India's volumes were contributed by EV models!

Maruti has made the Indian consumers go through the paradigm shift of considering CNGs over Diesel cars! Almost 34% of Maruti Suzuki India's volumes are now being contributed from CNG models. Maruti has single-handedly dominated CNG volumes and has a market share of 70.5% in overall CNG car sales. While the Tour (Taxi) models are heavily dominated by CNG portfolio; a large chunk of personal car buyers are also moving towards CNG models due to lower running/ownership cost.
Hyundai has extensive presence among segments and currently doesn't have a Hybrid model. The Korean automaker is trying all means possible to counter the onslaught of Tata/Mahindra and is widening its portfolio as per the market demand. Hyundai now needs to seriously consider stepping in the mass market EVs and also think about a Hybrid Creta to counter competition better.
It looks like Tata currently has the most balanced portfolio. However, the OEM is losing dominance across - Diesels are contested strongly by Mahindra, EV space share is lost heavily to MG. Tata Motors needs stronger representation of models in fuel type and the same model across fuel-types may not work well for the brand.
Mahindra's SUV focus has led to sustained dependance on Diesel models and 55% of overall diesel cars sold in India were from M&M in FY2025! Mahindra shook the EV space with will hyped BE6 and XE 9EV which helped the Indian automaker grab over 11% in overall EV sales during the previous fiscal.
Toyota is singlehandedly shaping the course of Hybrid sales in the subcontinent and over 79% of Hybrids sold in India were from Toyota's stable in FY2025! The Hycross and Hyryder are selling considerable numbers from the Hybrid variants and is helping the brand significantly. Hybrids has also helped the Japanese MNC reduce its dependance on Diesel models.
Kia is the second mass market OEM after M&M to have a significant volumes coming in from Diesel models. The OEM still is heavily reliant on diesel powertrain and has not entered the CNG/Hybrid segment yet.
MG India's bet towards EVs has helped the Chinese automaker gain volumes swiftly and Windsor proved to be one of its most successful model yet. The model has emerged to be the best selling EV of FY2025 and has taken Tata.ev by a huge surprise!
