BYD Workforce Crosses 10 Lakh, Exceeds Toyota, Ford, GM and Tesla Combined – But Is Bigger Always Better?

China's EV giant now employs over 1.02 million people globally. Its massive workforce highlights the scale of its manufacturing operations, but also raises questions about productivity, vertical integration and long-term profitability.

Chinese automotive giant BYD has crossed the 10 lakh employee milestone, with its global workforce now exceeding 1.02 million (10.2 lakh). Interestingly, the company employs more people than four major global automakers — Toyota, General Motors, Ford and Tesla — combined.

The milestone was disclosed by BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu during the 33rd Annual Conference of the China Society of Automotive Engineers on October 28, 2026.

While the workforce figures underline BYD's rapid expansion, they also highlight a fundamental difference between the Chinese manufacturer's business model and those of established global automakers.

BYD's workforce exceeds the combined employee strength of these four companies by approximately 1.69 lakh people, or nearly 20%.

However, these figures represent the latest available disclosures rather than headcounts measured on the same date. Toyota's figure is from March 2026, while Ford, GM and Tesla figures relate to their latest annual reporting periods.

How BYD's Workforce Has Evolved

BYD's employee base has expanded dramatically over the past few years, reflecting its investments in manufacturing capacity, battery technology, research and global expansion.

BYD employed approximately 5.7 lakh people at the end of 2022, rising to nearly 9.69 lakh by December 2024. However, its workforce declined to around 8.70 lakh by the end of 2025, before recovering strongly during 2026.

The latest announcement represents an increase of approximately 1.5 lakh employees compared with December 2025, although the difference should not be interpreted entirely as fresh recruitment without a detailed workforce reconciliation.

Why Does BYD Need Such a Massive Workforce?

Unlike several traditional automakers that depend heavily on external component suppliers, BYD follows an extensive vertical integration strategy. The company manufactures many critical vehicle components internally, including batteries, electric motors, power electronics and semiconductors.

BYD's operations extend beyond passenger vehicles into commercial vehicles, energy storage, electronics manufacturing and rail transportation. This diversified structure substantially increases the company's employee count compared with automakers that outsource a larger proportion of their manufacturing activities.

For example, BYD Electronic, which manufactures electronic devices and components for other companies, employed approximately 1.65 lakh people at the end of 2025. These employees form part of BYD's broader consolidated workforce.

Nearly 94% of BYD's Workforce Is Based in China

Despite its international growth, BYD relies heavily on its Chinese manufacturing, with about 9.6 lakh employees in China and 60,000 overseas.

This concentration is notable as international markets grow in importance for BYD's vehicle business.

In January–September 2026, BYD achieved 13.43 lakh international vehicle sales, a 92.7% year-on-year increase, making up nearly 43% of its total sales.

As the company expands manufacturing operations in markets such as Thailand, Brazil and Hungary, its international workforce is likely to become increasingly important.

Bigger Workforce Doesn't Necessarily Mean Higher Productivity

Although BYD leads in employee numbers, the comparison changes significantly when annual vehicle sales are considered. Using 2025 global vehicle sales and year-end employee numbers, the approximate vehicles sold per employee were:

Manufacturer

Vehicles per employee

Toyota Group

~29

Volkswagen Group

~13.5

Tesla

~12

BYD

~5.3

At first glance, BYD's ratio appears substantially lower than those of its competitors.

However, this is not a like-for-like manufacturing productivity comparison.

BYD's workforce includes employees involved in battery production, electronics manufacturing and other non-automotive businesses. Furthermore, companies that outsource component manufacturing do not include their suppliers' employees in their reported workforce.

Consequently, vehicles sold per employee is an imperfect indicator of operational efficiency and should not be interpreted as a direct measure of labour productivity.

1.2 Lakh R&D Engineers – BYD's Real Competitive Advantage?

One of the most significant aspects of BYD's workforce is its investment in research and development. According to Chairman Wang Chuanfu, the company has up to 1.2 lakh R&D engineers working across technologies including battery cells, electric motors, electronic control systems and semiconductors.

This engineering capability supports BYD's efforts to develop critical technologies internally rather than relying entirely on external suppliers. The strategy provides several potential advantages, including tighter integration between components, greater control over product development, reduced dependence on suppliers and opportunities to lower manufacturing costs at scale.

However, maintaining such a large research and manufacturing workforce also involves significant fixed costs, making consistent production volumes and profitability essential.

Workforce Expands Even as Vehicle Sales Face Pressure

BYD's employment milestone comes at a time when its automotive business is navigating a challenging domestic market.

During January–September 2026, the company sold approximately 31.32 lakh vehicles globally, representing a 3.9% year-on-year decline. Its first-half 2026 revenue stood at approximately RMB 344.8 billion, while net profit reached RMB 12.3 billion, with both figures declining compared with the corresponding period in 2025.

Intense competition in China's electric vehicle market, particularly from manufacturers such as Geely and Leapmotor, has increased pressure on pricing and profitability.

Nevertheless, BYD's overseas expansion continues to provide an important growth opportunity.

The key challenge will be balancing investment in manufacturing capacity and technology with sustainable sales growth and improving financial returns.

BYD employs over 10.2 lakh people globally, approximately 1.69 lakh more than Toyota, Ford, GM and Tesla combined. Around 94% of its workforce is based in China.

Auto Punditz Take

BYD reaching the 10 lakh employee milestone highlights its transformation from a battery manufacturer to a major vertically integrated automotive group.

However, comparing its workforce with Toyota, Ford, General Motors, and Tesla only tells part of the story. BYD operates in multiple industries and produces many components internally that others source from suppliers, making its larger workforce a result of its business structure rather than just vehicle production.

Notably, BYD's significant engineering workforce enables integration of battery technology, electronics, and vehicle development within one organization.

Yet, its growing employee base poses challenges in fixed costs, productivity, and profitability, especially with domestic vehicle sales under pressure.

BYD's future growth will focus on effectively leveraging its manufacturing scale, technological capabilities, and global expansion into sustainable profits, rather than employee numbers.
