4 min read

Citroën is reportedly evaluating India as a manufacturing and export hub for its upcoming 2CV electric hatchback. The retro-inspired EV could sit below the eC3, supporting Stellantis' ambition to transform India into a global automotive production centre.

French automaker Citroën is reportedly exploring the possibility of manufacturing its upcoming 2CV electric vehicle in India, with an eye on both domestic sales and international exports, including Europe.

The company is assessing India's suitability as a production base for the production version of the 2CV EV concept showcased at the 2026 Paris Motor Show.

The compact electric hatchback is expected to arrive in 2028, with an indicative European starting price of approximately €15,000.

However, Citroën has not officially confirmed Indian production of the 2CV EV, and the project remains under evaluation.

Why Citroën Is Considering India for 2CV EV Production

India's cost-competitive manufacturing ecosystem, supplier capabilities and growing electric mobility industry could make it an attractive location for the 2CV EV.

The company's manufacturing facility at Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu, already produces several Citroën models, including the C3, eC3, Aircross and Basalt.

According to the report, the plant has achieved more than 95% localisation and currently exports vehicles to eight international markets.

Stellantis is reportedly targeting an increase in output from approximately 16,000 vehicles in 2026 to more than 43,000 units by 2028.

Building an additional electric vehicle at the facility could improve capacity utilisation, support economies of scale and strengthen India's role in Stellantis' global manufacturing operations.

Stellantis' ₹4,000 Crore Investment Strengthens India's Role

The potential 2CV EV manufacturing programme comes alongside Stellantis' recently announced investment commitment.

On October 15, 2026, the automaker announced its FaSTLAne 2030 strategy for India, including:

  • Approximately ₹4,000 crore in fresh investment.

  • 12 product introductions across Jeep and Citroën, comprising seven all-new products and five major upgrades.

  • Expanded manufacturing, engineering and export operations.

  • A multi-energy portfolio covering ICE, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicles.

  • The first product under the new roadmap scheduled for Q2 2027.

The investment is expected to take Stellantis' cumulative commitment to India to approximately ₹15,000 crore by 2030.

While the 2CV EV has not been officially identified as part of the Indian manufacturing programme, an affordable electric hatchback would align with the company's broader strategy.

Retro Styling Meets Modern Electric Mobility

The upcoming EV draws inspiration from the iconic Citroën 2CV originally produced between 1949 and 1990.

Its distinctive styling elements include rounded headlights, a curved roofline and a fabric sunroof, recreating the original's character in a modern electric package.

The original 2CV was celebrated for affordability, practicality and its comfortable suspension. Its modern electric successor is expected to follow a similar philosophy, prioritising accessible mobility over outright performance.

Specific battery capacity, driving range, power output and charging specifications have yet to be officially announced.

Can the Citroën 2CV EV Succeed in India?

The Indian market presents a different set of challenges compared with Europe.

While demand for electric vehicles is growing, the entry-level EV segment remains highly price-sensitive. The Citroën 2CV EV could potentially compete with models such as the Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet EV if introduced locally.

However, the European price target of €15,000 cannot be directly translated into an Indian retail price. Significant localisation, competitive battery sourcing and a market-specific cost structure would be necessary to achieve attractive pricing.

The relatively compact dimensions of the 2CV EV would suit congested Indian cities, but competitive pricing, range and ownership costs would ultimately determine its prospects.

Challenges for Local Manufacturing

One of the biggest challenges would be establishing cost-effective sourcing for batteries, electric motors and related components.

According to the Autocar India report, Stellantis could potentially leverage technology or components from Leapmotor, in which it has an investment.

Developing a competitive local supply chain would be essential if India were selected as a production location. The opportunity also depends on export economics, production volumes and regulatory requirements in destination markets.

Citroën is reportedly evaluating India as a potential global manufacturing hub for its upcoming 2CV EV, expected in 2028. The retro-inspired electric hatchback could support Stellantis' export ambitions.

Auto Punditz Take

India's potential involvement in manufacturing the Citroën 2CV EV highlights how the country's automotive industry is evolving beyond producing vehicles primarily for domestic consumption.

For Stellantis, manufacturing a compact global electric vehicle in India could improve manufacturing economies of scale, supplier utilisation and export competitiveness.

However, the business case for manufacturing and selling the 2CV EV domestically may differ considerably.

The bigger opportunity for India may lie in becoming an export-oriented manufacturing base for affordable global EVs rather than relying solely on local demand.

Whether the 2CV EV eventually rolls off an Indian production line will depend on its final production economics, supplier localisation and Stellantis' global manufacturing strategy.

For now, the proposal remains an important development to watch rather than a confirmed production announcement.
