India's electric passenger vehicle market recorded 35,256 units in September 2026, with Tata Motors retaining leadership, Mahindra strengthening its position and new electric SUVs reshaping the best-selling EV rankings.
India's electric passenger vehicle market continued its expansion in September 2026, with 35,256 electric cars dispatched, compared with 21,757 units during September 2025. This represents a strong 62% year-on-year growth, equivalent to an additional 13,499 vehicles.
Tata Motors remained the largest electric passenger vehicle manufacturer, led by the Tata Punch EV and Nexon EV. Mahindra emerged as a formidable competitor, with the XEV 9S securing second position among India's best-selling electric cars during the month.
Meanwhile, the MG Windsor EV, which had been a dominant nameplate in the electric car segment, slipped to fourth position as competition intensified. Newer electric models, including the Tata Sierra, Maruti Suzuki e Vitara and Kia Syros EV, further contributed to the evolving market landscape.
The rankings also highlight growing competition from VinFast and BYD, while electric SUVs and crossovers continued to dominate the volume charts.

Model-Wise Sales Analysis
1. Tata Punch EV – 4,702 Units | 284% YoY Growth
The Tata Punch EV emerged as India's best-selling electric car during September 2026. Dispatches rose from 1,223 units in September 2025 to 4,702 units, registering an impressive 284% annual increase. The model accounted for approximately 13.3% of the total electric car dispatches, demonstrating the continued importance of compact electric SUVs.
2. Mahindra XEV 9S – 4,636 Units | Second Position
The Mahindra 9S emerged as one of the biggest contributors to September's EV volume, recording 4,636 dispatches. It secured second position, narrowly behind the Punch EV, and accounted for around 13.1% of total volume. Its performance also highlights Mahindra's growing importance in the electric SUV market.
3. Tata Nexon EV – 3,926 Units | 21% YoY Growth
The Tata Nexon EV ranked third with 3,926 units, against 3,251 units in the corresponding month last year. The 21% growth indicates that the Nexon remains a major volume contributor to Tata Motors' electric passenger vehicle portfolio despite the arrival of multiple competing SUVs.
4. MG Windsor EV – 3,300 Units | 30% YoY Decline
The MG Windsor EV ranked fourth with 3,300 units, compared with 4,741 units in September 2025. The 30% contraction is noteworthy, particularly when the overall market expanded by 62%. The Windsor remained MG's highest-volume model in the supplied data, but faced growing competition from Tata and Mahindra.
5. Mahindra XEV 9e – 1,975 Units | 25% YoY Decline
The Mahindra XEV 9e recorded 1,975 dispatches, declining from 2,619 units a year earlier. Despite the year-on-year reduction, the model remained among the five best-selling electric cars. Importantly, the newer XEV 9S significantly exceeded the XEV 9e's dispatches, indicating a changing model mix within Mahindra's electric vehicle portfolio.
6. Tata Sierra EV – 1,908 Units
The Tata Sierra contributed 1,908 units during September 2026, securing sixth position. Its contribution further strengthened Tata Motors' position in the electric SUV segment.
7. Tata Curvv EV – 1,536 Units | 309% YoY Growth
The Tata Curvv recorded one of the strongest increases among established nameplates, with dispatches rising from 376 units to 1,536 units. The 309% annual growth suggests a substantial improvement in the model's contribution to Tata's EV portfolio.
8. Mahindra BE6 – 1,517 Units | 11% YoY Decline
The Mahindra BE6 registered 1,517 units, compared with 1,701 units in September 2025, representing an 11% decline. Although its sales moderated, it continued to contribute meaningful volumes to Mahindra's expanding electric SUV lineup.
9. Tata Harrier EV – 1,452 Units | 39% YoY Decline
The Tata Harrier recorded 1,452 units, compared with 2,363 units a year earlier.
The 39% reduction suggests that growth across Tata's electric portfolio was uneven, with models such as the Punch and Curvv outperforming some larger offerings.
10. Maruti Suzuki e Vitara – 1,342 Units
Maruti Suzuki's e Vitara completed the top 10 with 1,342 dispatches. The model contributed approximately 3.8% of September's total volume. Its presence is significant because Maruti Suzuki is now contributing to a segment previously dominated by manufacturers such as Tata, Mahindra and MG.

Electric Car Market Share – September 2026
Tata Motors Retains EV Market Leadership
Tata Motors continued to lead India's electric passenger vehicle market with 14,973 units across seven models, registering approximately 66% growth over September 2025.
The Punch EV and Nexon EV collectively accounted for 8,628 units, representing almost 58% of Tata's total electric car dispatches. The company also benefited from the growing contribution of the Curvv EV and Sierra EV. However, the Harrier and Tiago recorded year-on-year declines, indicating mixed performance across the wider portfolio.
Mahindra Closes the Gap With Tata Motors
Mahindra recorded 8,547 units across five electric models, representing a 91% increase over September 2025. The XEV 9S was the company's principal volume driver, contributing more than half of Mahindra's September dispatches. With a 24.2% share of the supplied model-wise dataset, Mahindra strengthened its position as India's second-largest electric car manufacturer. The combined volume of Tata and Mahindra reached 23,520 units, underlining the growing influence of these two domestic manufacturers.
MG Windsor Faces Increasing Competition
MG Motor's three electric models collectively generated 4,558 dispatches, compared with 6,194 units in September 2025. The 26.4% decline was primarily associated with lower Windsor EV volumes, while the Comet EV also contracted by 19%. The ZS EV was the only MG model achieve annual growth, rising 12% to 280 units. Despite retaining third position among manufacturers, MG's performance reflects the increasingly competitive environment in India's electric passenger vehicle segment.
VinFast, Kia and BYD Expand Their Presence
VinFast registered 1,853 dispatches across four models. The Limo Green led its portfolio with 850 units, followed by the VF7 with 625 units and VF6 with 323 units. Kia recorded 1,681 units, supported by the Syros EV with 1,060 dispatches and Carens Clavis EV with 621 units. BYD delivered 1,137 units, with the Sealion 7 and Atto 3 accounting for 1,049 units combined. The Atto 3 grew by 161%, while the Sealion 7 posted 145% annual growth. These figures suggest that competition is broadening beyond the established domestic manufacturers, with newer entrants and global brands building meaningful volumes.
Fastest-Growing Electric Cars in September 2026

Auto Punditz Take: India's EV Market Is Expanding, but Competition Is Intensifying
September 2026's electric car dispatch data highlights three important developments.
First, Tata Motors continues to benefit from a broad electric vehicle portfolio, with the Punch and Nexon delivering substantial volumes. However, Mahindra is gaining ground rapidly, especially with the XEV 9S emerging as a major volume contributor.
Second, the rapid expansion of newer models is changing the competitive dynamics. The MG Windsor's decline, alongside strong performances from the Punch, XEV 9S and Curvv, suggests that market leadership is becoming increasingly contested.
Third, the arrival and expansion of brands such as Maruti Suzuki, Kia, VinFast and BYD are creating a more diversified electric passenger vehicle market.
The key takeaway is that EV dispatch growth is increasingly being driven by a wider choice of models, particularly electric SUVs. With September volumes rising 62% in the supplied dataset, the segment is showing substantial expansion, although individual models are experiencing markedly different growth trajectories.
Data methodology: All tables, manufacturer totals, shares and model rankings have been calculated from the 30-model dispatch dataset. Other published September 2026 EV figures, including AutoPunditz's earlier Vahan registration analysis, use different reporting bases and should not be directly compared with these model-wise dispatch figures.
