Festive Sales 2026: Two-Wheelers Outpace Cars as Bike Sales Rise 5.8%, Passenger Vehicles Decline 13.7%

India's festive automobile market is witnessing contrasting trends in 2026. While two-wheeler sales have maintained positive momentum during Navratri, passenger vehicles have registered a year-on-year decline, reflecting the impact of last year's unusually high sales base.

According to FADA data reported on October 21, total automobile retail sales reached approximately 10.32 lakh units during the nine-day Navratri period, growing 1.95% over the corresponding period in 2025. Two-wheelers accounted for nearly three-fourths of all vehicle sales.

Why Two-Wheelers Are Performing Better

The two-wheeler segment has demonstrated resilience despite a challenging comparison with the previous festive season.

An earlier Jefferies assessment, comparing October 11–17, 2026 with the equivalent festive period of September 22–28, 2025, recorded a 23% increase in two-wheeler registrations against 7% growth for passenger vehicles.

The same research highlighted a two-year compound annual growth rate of 17% for two-wheelers versus 10% for passenger vehicles during the opening festive week.

The difference between Jefferies' positive growth figures and the latest FADA results reflects different measurement windows. They should not be treated as directly interchangeable.

For two-wheelers, the results suggest underlying demand strength. The potential contributing factors include affordability, daily commuting requirements, replacement purchases and demand for practical personal mobility.

Why Are Passenger Vehicle Sales Declining?

The 13.66% decline in passenger vehicle retail sales needs to be interpreted carefully.

  • High comparison base: The 2025 festive season benefited significantly from vehicle price reductions following GST changes. This encouraged customers to advance purchases, making 2026 comparisons more challenging.

  • Elevated dealership inventory: Passenger vehicle dealerships entered the festive season with approximately 45 days of stock. This raises inventory financing costs and potentially increases the need for discounts.

  • Calendar differences: Navratri and Dussehra are not aligned identically between 2025 and 2026. Comparing the same number of calendar days may not fully capture festive purchasing patterns.

FADA President Sai Giridhar has cautioned against interpreting the passenger vehicle decline as definitive evidence of weakening consumer demand.

September 2026 vs Navratri 2026: The Shift in Momentum

The contrasting performance becomes more interesting when compared with September's retail figures.

Both segments recorded strong growth in September. However, the Navratri figures indicate that their festive performance has diverged considerably.

Auto Punditz Take

The early festive-season numbers suggest that India's two-wheeler market is holding up better than passenger vehicles against last year's high base.

However, the passenger vehicle decline should not automatically be interpreted as a collapse in car demand. September's strong retail performance, the timing of GST-related purchases and differences in festive calendars complicate the comparison.

The more important indicator will be whether passenger vehicle retailers can convert festive enquiries into deliveries while reducing accumulated inventory.

The key takeaway: Two-wheelers are currently winning the festive growth battle, but the complete picture will emerge only after the wider festive season, including Diwali, concludes.
