India Auto Retail Sales Hit Record September 2026: 25.37 Lakh Vehicles Sold, Up 31.8%
India’s automobile retail market delivered a record performance in September 2026, with total vehicle registrations reaching 25,36,920 units, according to FADA Research data.
Overall retail volumes increased by a strong 31.82% year-on-year (YoY) and 4.69% month-on-month (MoM). The month emerged as the best-ever September for Indian automobile retail, supported by strong festive demand across most vehicle categories.
The headline YoY growth, however, needs to be viewed in the context of a relatively favourable base. Even so, the underlying numbers were encouraging, with two-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and three-wheelers all recording particularly strong September performances.

Two-Wheeler Retail Crosses 17.9 Lakh Units
Two-wheelers were the largest contributor to India's vehicle retail market, with 17,90,188 registrations in September 2026.
Retail sales increased 33.08% YoY and 4.41% MoM, marking the best-ever September for the two-wheeler segment.
September 2026 volumes were 15% higher than the 2018 September peak, not just due to a favorable YoY base.
Festive buying, improved consumer sentiment, and sustained demand for motorcycles and scooters supported the segment.
Passenger Vehicle Sales Reach Record 4.27 Lakh Units
The passenger vehicle segment achieved its best-ever September with 4,27,213 vehicles registered.
PV retail increased 32.10% YoY and 6.17% MoM.
This indicates strong festive-season demand, with SUVs and utility vehicles significantly contributing to industry volumes. Surpassing the 4-lakh monthly retail mark in September sets a strong base for the remaining festive period.
Commercial Vehicle Retail Crosses 1 Lakh for the First Time in September
Commercial vehicles were among the strongest-performing categories during the month. Retail registrations stood at 1,03,557 units, rising 37.62% YoY and an impressive 14.09% MoM.
September 2026 became the first September in which commercial vehicle retail crossed the 1-lakh-unit mark.
The sharp sequential improvement is particularly noteworthy and points towards stronger commercial activity and festive-led vehicle purchases.
Three-Wheelers Set Another September Record
Three-wheeler registrations reached 1,32,570 units, with 22.25% YoY and 8.41% MoM growth, marking the segment's best-ever September.
Electrification is a key trend, with 65% of three-wheelers sold being electric, highlighting the rapid mainstream adoption of EVs in India's market.
Tractor Sales Decline Sequentially
Tractors were the exception to the positive monthly trend. September retail was 76,906 units, 13.75% higher YoY, but registrations declined 12.58% compared with August 2026.
FADA attributed this to the late festive season and patchy monsoon conditions. Tractors were the only major category to register a MoM decline in September.
Wheeled Construction Equipment Records Strong Rebound
Wheeled Construction Equipment recorded 6,486 retail registrations, increasing 38.00% YoY and 25.55% MoM.
Although comparatively small in absolute volumes, it recorded the highest YoY growth among the categories in the snapshot and the strongest sequential increase.
The performance indicates a sharp festive-led rebound in the segment.
What September 2026 Sales Tell Us
September's numbers show broad-based strength in India's automotive retail market. Four important trends stand out:
Total retail reached a record 25.37 lakh units, with YoY growth of 31.82%.
Two-wheelers contributed 17.90 lakh registrations, accounting for roughly seven out of every ten vehicles retailed during the month.
Passenger vehicles, two-wheelers and three-wheelers recorded their best-ever September, while CV retail crossed 1 lakh units for the first time in a September.
Electrification is particularly strong in three-wheelers, where EV penetration was around 65%.
At the same time, the 31.82% headline YoY growth shouldn't be interpreted in isolation, as the comparison is influenced by the previous year's base. The MoM increase of 4.69% provides a more measured indication of the market's sequential improvement.

Auto Punditz Take
September 2026 was more than simply a high-growth month for India's automobile market—it established new September benchmarks across several important categories.
The most encouraging indicator is the breadth of the performance. Two-wheelers reached a historical September high, passenger vehicles crossed 4.27 lakh registrations, commercial vehicles surpassed 1 lakh units, and three-wheelers continued their rapid transition towards electric mobility.
With 25.37 lakh vehicles retailed in a single month, India's festive season entered its crucial phase with considerable momentum. The next key indicator will be whether this strength carries into the subsequent festive-period registrations or whether September represented a degree of demand advancement.
