  • Tata Motors retained a commanding lead in India's electric car market with 13,630 registrations in July 2026. The company more than doubled its volumes from 6,732 units in July 2025, registering an impressive 102.5% YoY growth. Tata also improved sequentially, with registrations rising 6.5% from 12,796 units in June.

More importantly, Tata’s EV market share increased from 38.4% in July 2025 to 42.5% in July 2026, representing a gain of 4.1 percentage points. This means that more than four out of every ten electric passenger vehicles registered in India during July carried a Tata badge.

  • Mahindra was the second-largest electric passenger vehicle manufacturer during July, recording 7,710 registrations. Volumes increased by a substantial 125.7% YoY, compared with 3,416 units during July 2025. Its market share consequently climbed from 19.5% to 24.1%, a gain of 4.6 percentage points — the biggest YoY market-share improvement among established EV manufacturers in the table.

Sequentially, however, Mahindra's registrations declined 5.7% from 8,178 units in June.

  • MG registered 5,665 electric cars during July, securing a 17.7% share of the market.

Registrations fell 4% YoY from 5,902 units and 8.4% MoM from 6,184 units.

MG commanded 33.7% of India's electric car market in July 2025, but this declined to 17.7% in July 2026 — a substantial 16 percentage-point contraction.

This does not necessarily indicate a collapse in MG's absolute EV volumes. Instead, it highlights how rapidly India's overall EV market has expanded as Tata, Mahindra and several new players have added incremental volumes.

  • One of the most significant changes in India's EV landscape is the presence of Maruti Suzuki and VinFast among the five largest manufacturers. Maruti Suzuki recorded 1,596 registrations, giving it a 5% market share. Its registrations, however, declined 20.2% compared with 1,999 units in June.

  • VinFast followed closely with 1,480 registrations and 4.6% market share. VinFast posted a modest 2.2% sequential increase from 1,448 registrations in June.

  • BYD registered 747 vehicles during July, up 21.9% from 613 units a year earlier. Sequential registrations fell 19.4% from 927 units in June. BYD's market share consequently stood at 2.3%, compared with 3.5% during July last year.

  • Hyundai's July performance presents an interesting contrast. The manufacturer registered 565 EVs, representing a 21.4% decline compared with 719 units in July 2025. However, registrations jumped 51.1% month-on-month from just 374 units in June. Hyundai held a 1.8% market share, down from 4.1% a year ago.

  • Kia emerged as the fastest-growing manufacturer on a percentage basis among brands with a comparable July 2025 base. Registrations jumped from just 65 units in July 2025 to 469 units in July 2026, translating into an extraordinary 621.5% YoY increase. Its market share increased from 0.4% to 1.5%. Sequentially, registrations were down 13.1% from 540 units in June.

  • Toyota registered 123 electric vehicles in July, compared with 35 units in June, and captured a 0.4% share.

  • Citroen rounded out the top 10 with 51 registrations. While volumes declined 25% YoY, they increased 82.1% compared with June's 28 units. Citroen's market share slipped from 0.4% last year to 0.2%.

India recorded 32,036 electric passenger vehicle registrations in July 2026, up 82.9% YoY, with Tata Motors commanding a 42.5% market share.

Auto Punditz View

July 2026 demonstrates just how quickly India's electric passenger vehicle market is scaling. The headline 83% YoY growth is significant, but the changing competitive structure is arguably even more important. Tata has strengthened its leadership,

Mahindra is rapidly gaining ground, and the arrival of Maruti Suzuki and VinFast has expanded the competitive field. With more products and manufacturers entering the segment, the battle for EV market share is likely to intensify further through the remainder of 2026.
