Indofast Energy, GLIDA to Set Up 100+ Battery Swapping Stations Across India

India’s electric mobility infrastructure is set for another expansion as Indofast Energy and EV charging network operator GLIDA have announced a partnership to establish more than 100 battery-swapping stations across the country over the next 12 months.
Under the collaboration, Indofast Energy’s battery-swapping facilities will be co-located at existing and upcoming GLIDA EV charging sites, effectively creating integrated EV energy hubs offering both conventional plug-in charging and quick battery swapping.
The companies plan to cover 50 locations with over 100 battery-swapping stations, with the initial rollout comprising 10 Quick Interchange Stations (QIS) across Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad.

The partnership allows Indofast Energy to tap into GLIDA’s existing charging locations instead of developing every swapping site independently, potentially accelerating network deployment in high-demand urban markets.
Charging and Battery Swapping Under One Roof
One of the more interesting aspects of the partnership is the decision to co-locate battery swapping infrastructure alongside conventional EV chargers.
India’s EV ecosystem has so far largely evolved through separate charging and battery-swapping networks. Bringing the two formats together could make individual locations more useful to a wider range of electric vehicles.
Passenger EV users can continue using GLIDA’s charging infrastructure, while compatible electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers and commercial EVs can use Indofast Energy’s battery-swapping system.
This approach could also improve utilisation of existing EV infrastructure sites, particularly at locations already equipped with electricity connections, parking facilities and regular EV traffic.
Why Battery Swapping Matters for Commercial EVs
Battery swapping is especially relevant for high-utilisation vehicles such as electric delivery scooters, e-rickshaws, electric autos and last-mile delivery vehicles.
Unlike conventional charging, where a vehicle may remain stationary while its battery replenishes, a swapping station allows users to exchange a depleted battery for a charged unit and resume operations quickly.
For a private EV owner, a longer charging stop may be manageable. For a delivery rider or commercial fleet operator, however, every hour that a vehicle remains stationary potentially reduces earning capacity.
This makes rapid energy replenishment one of the strongest use cases for battery swapping in India's rapidly expanding commercial electric mobility segment.
Indofast Energy Expanding Its Swapping Footprint
Indofast Energy is a joint venture between IndianOil and SUN Mobility, bringing together IndianOil’s energy infrastructure footprint and SUN Mobility’s battery-swapping technology.
According to Indofast Energy’s current website, its network has already recorded more than 65 million battery swaps and onboarded over 100,000 vehicles.
The GLIDA agreement therefore appears to be part of a larger strategy of accelerating network expansion through partnerships rather than relying exclusively on standalone swapping locations.
It also follows Indofast Energy’s recent partnership activity aimed at placing Quick Interchange Stations at existing EV charging and commercial locations.
What GLIDA Brings to the Partnership
GLIDA, formerly known as Fortum Charge & Drive India, has been operating EV charging infrastructure in India since 2017.
Its existing charging network and experience in operating public EV charging locations give Indofast Energy access to sites that already attract electric vehicle users.
From an infrastructure perspective, co-location can also reduce some of the challenges associated with acquiring new sites and developing completely independent facilities.
Instead of treating charging and battery swapping as competing solutions, the partnership effectively positions them as complementary technologies serving different vehicle categories and usage patterns.
Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad First
The deployment will initially focus on Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad, where 10 Indofast Quick Interchange Stations are planned at GLIDA locations.
The choice of these three southern metropolitan markets is significant given the concentration of app-based mobility services, food and e-commerce delivery operations and electric three-wheelers in major urban centres.
After the initial installations, the partnership is expected to expand progressively toward its target of more than 100 swapping stations across 50 sites during the next year.
Battery Swapping Could Become Key to India's Fleet Electrification
India's EV infrastructure requirement is unlikely to be addressed through one charging format alone.
Private electric cars can largely depend on home charging supplemented by public fast chargers. Commercial two-wheelers and three-wheelers, however, operate under substantially different conditions, including longer daily utilisation and greater sensitivity to downtime.
Battery swapping addresses this specific use case by separating battery charging time from vehicle operating time.
Another advantage of the Battery-as-a-Service model is that the battery can effectively be separated from the vehicle ownership equation, depending on the commercial model offered. This can potentially lower the upfront acquisition barrier for certain EV categories while shifting energy usage toward a recurring service model.
However, battery swapping also requires compatible vehicle architectures, standardised battery ecosystems, adequate battery inventory and sufficient station utilisation to remain commercially viable.
The next phase of competition is therefore likely to be determined not simply by how many swapping stations an operator installs, but by the number of compatible vehicles using each network.
