Jhumarmal Tunwal Gets Larger MSME Industry Role

As Vice President of the SME Chamber of India, Tunwal is expected to work across several areas relevant to small and medium enterprises, including entrepreneurship development, technology adoption, access to finance and policy advocacy.

His responsibilities will also include supporting initiatives aimed at improving the competitiveness of Indian businesses in both domestic and international markets.

The appointment was announced by Chandrakant Salunkhe, Founder and President of the SME Chamber of India and Manufacturers & Exporters Association of India (MEAI).

Tunwal E-Motors Expands Presence in Electric Mobility

Jhumarmal Tunwal currently leads Tunwal E-Motors, an electric vehicle manufacturer primarily focused on electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers.

According to the company, Tunwal E-Motors has recorded revenue of more than ₹275 crore while expanding its presence across India. The manufacturer has also established two production facilities as part of its domestic manufacturing strategy.

Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Pune, Tunwal E-Motors is listed on the National Stock Exchange. Its portfolio targets a broad range of customers including students, daily commuters and small business owners, with products positioned around affordability, low running costs and everyday urban mobility.

Electric Mobility's Growing Role in India's MSME Ecosystem

The development is notable because India's EV industry is increasingly becoming intertwined with the country's MSME ecosystem.

Beyond established automobile manufacturers, the transition towards electric mobility is creating opportunities for smaller companies across battery technology, electronics, charging infrastructure, software, vehicle components, manufacturing and mobility services.

Companies operating in these segments frequently depend on access to capital, localisation, technology partnerships and supportive policy frameworks to scale their operations.

Tunwal's appointment could therefore provide the Chamber with additional representation from a sector that is undergoing rapid technological and manufacturing transformation.

The SME Chamber said the appointment reflects growing participation of manufacturing and new-age enterpriseswithin its leadership.

Tunwal Highlights MSMEs' Contribution to Indian Economy

Commenting on his appointment, Jhumarmal Tunwal highlighted the role of MSMEs in driving innovation, employment and economic activity.

He said he intends to work with the SME Chamber, industry representatives and policymakers to create more opportunities for entrepreneurs and strengthen India's MSME ecosystem.

What is the SME Chamber of India?

The SME Chamber of India is a national organisation focused on promoting and developing Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

Its activities include working with government bodies, financial institutions, industry associations and international organisations across areas such as entrepreneurship, policy advocacy, exports, capacity building, innovation and sustainable business development.

Auto Punditz Take

Jhumarmal Tunwal's appointment comes at a time when India's electric mobility ecosystem is expanding beyond major OEMs into a much larger network of manufacturers, technology companies, suppliers and startups.

For smaller EV manufacturers in particular, issues such as localisation, financing, technology adoption and scaling domestic production remain critical.

Having an electric mobility entrepreneur in a senior position within an MSME-focused industry organisation could help bring some of these concerns into broader discussions around India's manufacturing and small-business policies.

At the same time, the effectiveness of the appointment will ultimately depend on how actively the Chamber translates industry representation into initiatives around financing, technology, policy engagement and market access for MSMEs.
